¹⁶ At my first answer no one was beside me, but all deserted me. May it not be laid to their charge.

¹¹ I was a reproach among all my foes, but especially among my neighbors, and a fear to my friends; those who saw me outside fled from me. ¹² I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind; I am like a broken vessel. ¹³ For I have heard the slander of many; fear is on every side; because of their plottings together against me, they planned to take away my life.

⁵⁰ And leaving Him, all fled.

³² Behold, the hour comes, yea, has now come, that you will be scattered, each man to his own things, and you will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.

⁶⁰ And kneeling down, he cried with a loud voice, Lord, do not lay this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

¹ Men, brothers and fathers! Hear my defense now to you.

¹⁶ To them I answered, It is not the custom of the Romans to deliver any man to destruction before he being accused may have the accusers face to face, and have had freedom to answer for himself concerning the accusation.

³ My answer to those who examine me is this:

¹¹ For behold this same thing (you being grieved according to God); how much it worked out earnestness in you; but also defense; but also indignation; but also fear; but also desire; but also zeal; but also vengeance! In everything you approved yourselves to be clear in the matter.

⁷ even as it is righteous for me to think this of you all, because you have me in your heart, inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you are all partakers of my grace.

¹⁷ But these others preach in love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.

¹⁵ This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

¹⁰ For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and he has departed to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

¹⁵ but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason of the hope in you, with meekness and fear;
