⁵ And they said to him, Behold, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

⁹ For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him. Lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be counted among the nations.

¹⁴ When you come to the land which Jehovah your God gives you, and shall possess it and shall live in it and shall say, I will set a king over me, like all the nations around me, ¹⁵ you shall surely set a king over you, whom Jehovah your God shall choose. You shall set a king over you from among your brothers. You may not set a stranger over you, who is not your brother.

⁶ But the thing was evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to Jehovah. ⁷ And Jehovah said to Samuel, Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. ⁸ According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even until this day, works with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods, so they do also to you.

¹⁹ But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, No, but we will have a king over us. ²⁰ And we shall be, also we, like all the nations, so that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.

¹⁷ Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call to Jehovah, and He shall send thunder and rain, so that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, that which you have done in the sight of Jehovah, in asking a king for you.

¹⁰ Where is your king now, that he may save you in all your cities; and your judges of whom you said, Give me a king and rulers? ¹¹ I gave you a king in My anger, and took him away in My wrath.

²¹ And afterward they asked for a king. And God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
