⁹ But you have done evil above all who were before you, for you have gone and made yourself other gods, and molded images, to provoke Me to anger, and have cast Me behind your back;

¹⁷ You shall make you no molten gods.

⁸ Also in Horeb you provoked Jehovah to wrath, so that Jehovah was angry with you to have destroyed you. ⁹ When I had gone up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which Jehovah made with you, then I stayed in the mountain forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water. ¹⁰ And Jehovah delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them according to all the words which Jehovah spoke with you in the mountain out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. ¹¹ And it happened, at the end of forty days and forty nights Jehovah gave me the two tables of stone, the tablets of the covenant. ¹² And Jehovah said to me, Arise! Get down quickly from here, for your people whom you have brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted. They have quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them. They have made them a molten image. ¹³ And Jehovah spoke to me saying: I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people. ¹⁴ Let Me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under the heavens. And I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they. ¹⁵ So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire. And the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands. ¹⁶ And I looked, and behold! You had sinned against Jehovah your God, and had made you a molten calf. You had turned aside quickly out of the way which Jehovah had commanded you.

²⁴ You have been rebellious against Jehovah from the day that I knew you.

¹⁶ They provoked Him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked Him to anger. ¹⁷ They sacrificed to devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new ones newly come up, whom your fathers did not fear.

²¹ They have moved Me to jealousy with a no-god. They have provoked Me to anger with their vanities. And I will move them to jealousy with a no-people. I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

⁸ They chose new gods; then war was in the gates. Was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?

²⁸ And the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold and said to them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Behold your gods, O, Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!

³³ After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but turned and made priests of the high places from the lowest of the people. He who desired, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. ³⁴ And this thing is the sin of the house of Jeroboam, even to blot it from off the face of the earth.

¹⁶ And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, who sinned, and that he made Israel to sin.

²² And Judah did evil in the sight of Jehovah, and they provoked Him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done.

³⁴ And he did evil in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin with which he made Israel to sin.

³¹ And as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, he also took Jezebel, the daughter of Eth-baal king of the Sidonians, for a wife. And he went and served Baal, and worshiped him.

³ For he built up again the high places which his father Hezekiah had destroyed. And he reared up altars for Baal, and made an Asherah, as Ahab king of Israel did. And he worshiped all the host of heaven, and served them.

²⁶ But Jehovah did not turn from the heat of His great wrath, with which His anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him.

¹⁵ And he ordained priests for himself for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made.

⁶ And he caused his sons to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom. He also practiced secret arts, and used fortune-telling, and used witchcraft, and dealt with mediums, and with soothsayers. He did much evil in the sight of Jehovah in order to provoke Him to anger.

²⁶ But they were disobedient and rebelled against You, and cast Your Law behind their backs. And they killed Your prophets who testified against them to turn them to You, and they worked great blasphemies.

¹⁷ Yea, you hate to be taught, and you toss My Words behind you.

⁴⁰ How often they provoked Him in the wilderness, and grieved Him in the desert!

⁵⁶ Yet they tempted and provoked the Most High God, and kept not His testimonies;

¹⁹ They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped the melted image. ²⁰ And they changed their Glory into the likeness of an ox that eats grass.

²⁹ and provoked Him to anger with their doings; and the plague broke in on them.

⁴ Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. ⁵ They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see; ⁶ they have ears, but they do not hear; they have noses, but they do not smell; ⁷ they have hands, but they do not handle; they have feet, but they do not walk; they do not mutter through their throat. ⁸ The ones who make them are like them, and everyone who trusts in them.

⁹ Those who make a graven image are all of them vanity; and the things in which they delight shall not help; and they are their own witnesses. They do not see nor know, that they may be ashamed. ¹⁰ Who has formed a god, or melted a graven image that is good for nothing? ¹¹ Behold, all his companions shall be ashamed; and the craftsmen; they are from men. They shall assemble; all of them shall stand; they shall dread; they shall be ashamed together. ¹² He engraves iron with a tool. He works in the coals, and forms it with hammers, and works it with the strength of his arms. Then, he is hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water, and is weak. ¹³ He fashions wood, and stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil; he shapes it with carving tools, and he marks it out with the compass, and makes it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man, to sit in the house. ¹⁴ He cuts down cedars, and takes cypress and oak, which he makes the trees of the forest strong for him; he plants a tree, and the rain makes it grow. ¹⁵ And it shall be for a man to burn; for he will take some of it and warm himself. Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread; yes, he makes a god and worships; he makes it a graven image and falls down to it. ¹⁶ He burns part of it in the fire; with part of it he eats flesh; he roasts roast and is satisfied; yea, he warms himself, and says, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire. ¹⁷ And the rest of it he makes into a god, his graven image; he falls down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says, Deliver me! for you are my god. ¹⁸ They have not known nor understood; for He has shut their eyes so that they cannot see; and their hearts so that they cannot understand. ¹⁹ And none thinks within his heart, nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread on the coals of it; I have roasted flesh and eaten; and shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down to the stock of a tree? ²⁰ He feeds on ashes; a deceived heart has turned him aside, so that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

⁹ Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know; ¹⁰ and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?

¹⁴ Every man is stupid for lack of knowledge; every refiner is put to shame by the graven image; for his molten image is a lie, and no breath is in them. ¹⁵ They are vanity, the work of delusion; in the time of their judgment they shall perish. ¹⁶ The Portion of Jacob is not like them; for He is the Maker of all things; and Israel is the rod of His inheritance. Jehovah of Hosts is His name.

³ And He put out the form of a hand, and took me by a lock of my head. And the Spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heavens, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the opening of the inner gate facing north, where there was a seat of the image of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy.

¹⁷ And He said to me, Have you seen, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they do the hateful things which they do here? For they have filled the land with violence and have turned to provoke Me to anger. And lo, they put the branch to their nose.

³⁵ So the Lord Jehovah says this: Because you have forgotten Me and cast Me behind your back, therefore bear also your wickedness and your adulteries.

²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
