⁴² Be alert, therefore, for you do not know at what hour your Lord will come.

³⁶ But concerning that day and that hour, no man knows, not even the angels of heaven, but the Father alone.

³⁸ He said to them, My soul is sorrowful even to death; wait for me here, and watch with me. ³⁹ And he went a little further and fell on his face, and prayed saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; but let it be, not as I will, but as you. ⁴⁰ Then he came to his disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, So, you were not able to watch with me even for one hour? ⁴¹ Awake and pray, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is ready, but the body is weak.

³³ Look out, be alert and pray; for you do not know when the time is. ³⁴ It is just like a man who went on a journey, and left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to each man his work, and he commanded the porter to keep awake. ³⁵ Be alert therefore, for you do not know when the owner of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at the cockcrow, or in the morning. ³⁶ He might come suddenly, and find you asleep. ³⁷ What I say to you I say to all of you: Be alert.

³⁵ Let your girdle be fastened on your loins, and your lamps lighted. ³⁶ And be like men who expect their master, when he will return from the wedding house; so that when he comes and knocks, they will immediately open the door for him. ³⁷ Blessed are those servants, whom their master, when he comes, finds awake; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself and make them sit down, and come in, and serve them. ³⁸ If he should come in the second or the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants. ³⁹ But know this, that if the master of the house knew at what watch the thief would come, he would have kept awake, and not allowed his house to be plundered. ⁴⁰ Therefore, you also be ready; for the Son of man will come in that very hour which you do not expect.

³⁶ Therefore keep watch all the time and pray, so that you may be worthy to escape all these things which are to happen, and that you may stand before the Son of man.

¹¹ Know this also, that now is the time and the hour that we should awake from our sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we believed.

¹³ Watch, stand firm in the faith, quit you like men, be valiant, be strong.

⁶ Therefore let us not sleep, as do others, but let us watch and be sober.

⁷ But the end of all things is at hand: be devout therefore, and be mindful of prayer.

⁸ Be vigilant, and be cautious; because your adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:

² Awake, and hold fast to the things which remain but are ready to die; for I have not found your works perfect before my God. ³ Remember, therefore, just as you have received and heard, so hold fast and repent. And if, therefore, you do not awake, I will come against you as a thief, and you shall not know at what hour I will come upon you.

¹⁵ And behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he who watches and keeps his garments, lest he must walk naked, and they see his shame.
