²⁹ And they shall know that I am Jehovah, when I have made the land desolate and a waste because of all their abominations which they have done.

¹⁸ And the Egyptians shall know that I am Jehovah, in my being honored through Pharaoh, through his chariots, and through his horsemen.

⁹ And the sons of Israel secretly did the things which were not right against Jehovah their God, and built high places for themselves in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city, ¹⁰ and set up for themselves pillars and Asherahs on every high hill, and under every green tree; ¹¹ and burned incense there in all high places, like the nations that Jehovah had removed from their face; and did evil things to provoke Jehovah, ¹² and served the idols, of which Jehovah had said to them, You shall not do this thing. ¹³ And Jehovah testified against Israel, and against Judah, by the hand of all His prophets, and every seer, saying, Turn back from your evil ways, and keep My commands, My statutes, according to all the law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by the hand of My servants the prophets. ¹⁴ And they did not listen, and hardened their necks, like the necks of their fathers, who did not remain faithful to Jehovah their God. ¹⁵ And they rejected His statutes and His covenant that He made with their fathers, and His testimonies that He testified against them, and went after the vain thing, and became vain, and after the nations that were around them, of whom Jehovah had commanded them not to do like them. ¹⁶ And they left all the commands of Jehovah their God and made for themselves casted images, two calves, and made an Asherah, and bowed to all the host of the heavens, and served Baal, ¹⁷ and caused their sons and daughters to pass through the fire and divined, and used incantations, and sold themselves to do the evil in the eyes of Jehovah, to provoke Him, ¹⁸ so that Jehovah was very angry against Israel, and turned them away from His face; not one was left, only the tribe of Judah by itself.

¹⁴ Also, all the heads of the priests, and the people were continually acting treacherously according to all the abominable idols of the nations; and they defiled the house of Jehovah that He had sanctified in Jerusalem. ¹⁵ And Jehovah, the God of their fathers, sent to them by the hand of His messengers, rising early and sending, for He had pity on his people and on His dwelling place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets until the wrath of Jehovah went up against His people, until there was no healing. ¹⁷ And He caused the king of the Chaldeans to go up against them; and he killed their choice ones by the sword in the house of their holy place, and had no pity on the young man and the virgin, the old man and the very aged; He gave all into his hand.

¹⁶ Jehovah has been known, He has executed judgment; the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. A meditation, Selah.

¹⁷ Let them be ashamed and terrified for ever; yea, let them be confounded and perish. ¹⁸ And let them know Your name is Jehovah, that You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

¹ Roam around in Jerusalem's streets and see now, and know, and seek in her plazas if you can find a man, if there is one who does justice, who seeks truth; and I will pardon her. ² And though they say, As Jehovah lives, surely they swear falsely. ³ O Jehovah, are not Your eyes for the truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain. You consumed them, yet they refused to take correction. They made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to return. ⁴ So I said, Surely they are poor; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of Jehovah, the ordinance of their God. ⁵ I will go up for myself to the great men and will speak to them. For they have known the way of Jehovah, the judgment of their God. Surely these have joined in breaking the yoke; they have torn off the bonds. ⁶ On account of this a lion out of the forest shall strike them; a wolf of the desert shall destroy them; a leopard is watching over their cities. Everyone who goes out from them shall be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many; their apostasies are multiplied. ⁷ Why should I pardon you for this? Your sons have forsaken Me and have sworn by No-gods. When I adjured them, they then committed adultery and gathered themselves by troops in a harlot's house. ⁸ They were like lusty, well fed stallions in the morning, everyone neighing after the wife of his neighbor. ⁹ Shall I not judge for these things, says Jehovah? And shall not My soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

²⁵ Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good from you. ²⁶ For among My people are found wicked ones. They lie in wait, as one who sets snares. They set a trap, they catch men. ²⁷ Like a cage full of birds, so their houses are full of treachery. On account of this they have become great and grown rich. ²⁸ They have become fat; they shine. Yes, they pass over the deeds of the evil; they do not plead the cause, the cause of the orphan, that they may prosper. And they do not vindicate the right of the needy. ²⁹ Shall I not visit for these things, declares Jehovah? Shall not My soul be avenged on such a nation as this? ³⁰ An astounding and horrible thing has happened in the land. ³¹ The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their hands; and My people love it so. And what will you do at the end of it?

⁷ And the slain shall fall in your midst, and you shall know that I am Jehovah.

¹¹ So says the Lord Jehovah: Strike with your hand, and stamp with your foot, and say, Alas, for all the evil abominations of the house of Israel! For they shall fall by the sword, by the famine, and by the plague.

²⁷ The king shall mourn, and the ruler shall be clothed with despair. And the hands of the people of the land shall be terrified. According to their way, I will do to them, and according to their judgments, I will judge them. And they shall know that I am Jehovah.

⁶ And He said to me, Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great abominations which the house of Israel is doing here, that I should be far from My sanctuary? But you turn again and you shall see greater abominations. ⁷ And He brought me to the opening of the court. And I looked, and, behold, a single hole in the wall. ⁸ And He said to me, Son of man, dig now in the wall. And I dug in the wall; and, behold, an opening! ⁹ And He said to me, Go in and see the evil abominations that they are doing here. ¹⁰ And I went in and looked. And, behold, every form of creeping thing, and hateful beast, and all the idols of the house of Israel were carved on the wall all around. ¹¹ And seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, and Jaazaniah, the son of Shaphan, were standing among them. These were standing among them, and each man with his censer in his hand, and the odor of the cloud of incense was rising. ¹² And He said to me, Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each man in the rooms of his image? For they are saying, Jehovah does not see us, Jehovah has forsaken the earth. ¹³ And He said to me, You turn again, you shall see greater abominations which they are doing. ¹⁴ And He brought me to the opening of the gate of the house of Jehovah, toward the north. And, behold, women were sitting there weeping for Tammuz. ¹⁵ And He said to me, Have you seen, son of man? You turn again and you shall see greater abominations than these.

² And you, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Then cause her to know all her abominations. ³ Then you shall say, So says the Lord Jehovah: The city sheds blood in her midst, that her time may come. And she makes idols against herself, to defile herself . ⁴ By your blood which you have shed, you are guilty; and by your idols which you have made, you are defiled. And your days are brought near, and you have come to your years. On account of this, I have made you a reproach to the nations, and a mocking to all the lands. ⁵ Those who are near and those far from you shall mock against you, O defiled of name, abounding in tumult. ⁶ Behold, the rulers of Israel, each man by his might, have been in you in order to shed blood. ⁷ In you they have despised father and mother. In your midst they have dealt with the alien by oppression. In you they oppressed the widow and the orphan. ⁸ You have despised My holy things and have profaned My sabbaths. ⁹ In you are men of slander in order to shed blood, and in you they eat on the mountains. In your midst they do unchaste acts. ¹⁰ In you he has uncovered the nakedness of the father; in you they humbled the defiled by her impurity. ¹¹ And a man has done abomination with his neighbor's wife, and a man has defiled his daughter-in-law in unchaste acts. And in you a man has humbled his sister, his father's daughter. ¹² In you they have taken bribes in order to shed blood. You have taken interest and increase, and you have gained by extortion of your neighbor. And you have forgotten Me, declares the Lord Jehovah. ¹³ And behold! I have struck My palm against your unjust gain which you have made, and at your blood which has been in your midst. ¹⁴ Can your heart stand, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with you? I, Jehovah, have spoken, and I will act. ¹⁵ And I will scatter you among the nations and sow you in the lands. And I will destroy your uncleanness out of you.

²⁵ A plot by her prophets is in her midst, like a roaring lion tearing prey. They have devoured souls and they have taken the riches and gems. They multiplied her widows in her midst. ²⁶ Her priests have violated My law and have profaned My holy things. They have not divided between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and clean they have not taught. And they have hidden their eyes from the sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. ²⁷ Her rulers in her midst are like wolves tearing prey, to shed blood, to destroy souls, in order to gain unjust gain. ²⁸ And her prophets have daubed themselves with lime, seeing empty visions, and divining lies to them, saying, So says the Lord Jehovah, when Jehovah has not spoken. ²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression and practiced robbery. And they troubled the poor and the needy, and they have oppressed the stranger without justice. ³⁰ And I sought among them a man to wall up a wall and stand in the breach before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none. ³¹ So I have poured out on them My disgust. With the fire of My wrath I consumed them. I have given their way on their heads, states the Lord Jehovah.

⁴⁹ And they shall put your wickedness on you, and you shall bear the sins of your idols. And you shall know that I am the Lord Jehovah.

¹¹ And I will execute judgments on Moab. And they shall know that I am Jehovah.

¹⁷ Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt on their land, they even defiled it by their ways and by their doings. As the defilement of woman's impurity, their way was before Me ¹⁸ So I poured out My fury on them, because of the blood that they had poured out on the land, and for their idols by which they defiled it.

⁹ The voice of Jehovah calls out to the city; and one of sound wisdom will see Your name. Hear the rod, and Him who appointed it. ¹⁰ Are there yet in the house of the wicked the treasures of wickedness, and a cursed ephah of leanness? ¹¹ Shall I declare wicked balances to be pure, or a bag of deceitful weights? ¹² For her rich ones are full of violence, and her inhabitants speak a lie, and their tongue is deceit in their mouth.

¹ Woe to her rebelling and being defiled, to the oppressing city! ² She did not listen to the voice; she did not receive correction; she did not trust in Jehovah; she did not draw near to her God. ³ Her rulers within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they do not gnaw bones for the morning. ⁴ Her prophets are proud, men of deceit; her priests have profaned the sanctuary; they have done violence to the Law.
