⁷ " 'And on the tenth of this seventh month you will have a holy convocation, and _⌊you will afflict yourselves_⌋;* you will not do any work.

²⁹ "And this shall be _⌊a lasting statute_⌋* for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month, you must deny yourselves and you must not do any work, whether the native or* the alien who is dwelling in your midst, ³⁰ because on this day he shall make atonement for you to cleanse you; you must be clean from all your sins _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh. ³¹ It is _⌊a Sabbath of complete rest_⌋* for you, and you shall deny yourselves—it is _⌊a lasting statute_⌋.*

²⁶ Then* Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁷ "Surely the Day of Atonement is on the tenth day of the seventh month; it shall be a holy assembly for you, and you shall deny yourselves, and you shall present an offering made by fire to Yahweh. ²⁸ And you must not do _⌊any regular work_⌋* on _⌊this very same day_⌋,* because it is the Day of Atonement to make atonement for you _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God. ²⁹ If there is any person who does not deny himself on _⌊this very same day_⌋,* then* he shall be cut off from his people. ³⁰ As for* any person who does any work on _⌊this very same day_⌋,* I will exterminate that person from the midst of his people. ³¹ You must not do any work; it is a _⌊lasting statute_⌋* throughout your generations in all your dwellings. ³² It is _⌊a Sabbath of complete rest_⌋* for you, and you shall deny yourselves on the ninth day of the month in the evening—from evening to evening you must observe your extraordinary* Sabbath."

²¹ I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava to humble ourselves before our God in order to seek from him a safe journey for us, our children, and our possessions.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I weakened my soul with fasting, and my prayer _⌊returned to me unanswered_⌋.*

⁵ Those who sow with tears shall reap with rejoicing. ⁶ He who diligently goes out with weeping, carrying the seed bag, shall certainly come in with rejoicing, carrying his sheaves.

¹² And the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, called on that day
for weeping and mourning, and for baldness and girding _⌊with_⌋* sackcloth.

³ 'Why do we fast, and you do not see it? We humiliate our soul, and you do not notice it?' Look! You find delight on the day of your fast, and you oppress all your workers! ⁴ Look! You fast to quarrel and strife, and to strike with a _⌊wicked fist_⌋.* You shall not fast as you do _⌊today_⌋,* to _⌊make your voice heard_⌋* on the height. ⁵ Is the fast I choose like this, a day for humankind to humiliate _⌊himself_⌋*? To bow his head like a reed, and _⌊make_⌋* his bed on sackcloth and ashes; you call this a fast and a day of pleasure to Yahweh?

³ saying to the _⌊priests of the house of Yahweh of hosts_⌋* and to the prophets, "Should I mourn in the fifth month and keep myself separate* as I have done for these many years?"

¹⁰ " 'I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants* of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication, and they will look to me whom they pierced, and they shall mourn over him, as one wails over an only child, and they will grieve bitterly over him as one grieves bitterly over a firstborn.

⁴ Blessed are the ones who mourn, because they will be comforted.

³ No, I tell you, but unless you repent you will all perish as well!

⁹ And because* considerable time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous because even the Fast* was already over, Paul strongly recommended,

⁶ knowing this, that our old man was crucified together with him, in order that the body of sin may be done away with, that we may no longer be enslaved to sin.

²⁷ But I discipline my body and subjugate it, lest somehow after* preaching to others, I myself should become disqualified.

⁹ now I rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that you were grieved to repentance. For you were grieved according to the will of God, so that you suffered loss in no way through us. ¹⁰ For grief according to the will of God brings about a repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted, but worldly grief brings about death. ¹¹ For behold how much diligence this very thing, being grieved according to the will of God, has brought about in you: what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! In everything you have demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded! ⁹ Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your* joy to gloominess. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
