⁴ "Look, I am insignificant. What shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.

²⁷ Then Abraham answered and said, "Look, please, I was bold to speak to my Lord, but I am dust and ashes.

¹⁰ _⌊I am not worthy_⌋* of all the loyal love and all the faithfulness that you have shown* your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

¹⁹ And they said to him, "Keep quiet! Put your hand on your mouth and come with us and be for us a father and a priest. Is it better being a priest for a house of one man or being a priest for a tribe and clan in Israel?"

¹⁰ The heart of David struck him after he had counted the people, and David said to Yahweh, "I have sinned greatly in what I have done! So then, O Yahweh, please forgive the guilt of your servant because I have acted very foolishly."

⁴ Then he went into the wilderness one day's journey, and he went and sat under a certain broom tree. Then _⌊he asked Yahweh that he might die_⌋,* and he said, "It is enough now, Yahweh; take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors."*

⁶ and said, "My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God. For our sins have risen above our heads and our guilt has grown up to the heavens.

¹⁵ Yahweh, God of Israel, you are righteous, for we have been left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this."

³³ You are righteous in everything that has come on us, for you dealt faithfully, and we have acted wickedly.

³¹ then you plunge me into the slime pit, and my clothes abhor me. ³² "For* he is not a mortal like me that I can answer him, that _⌊we can come to trial together_⌋.* ³³ There is no arbiter between us that he might lay his hand on both of us. ³⁴ May he remove his rod from me, and let his dread not terrify me; ³⁵ then I would speak and not fear him,* for _⌊in myself I am not fearful_⌋.*

²¹ and it argues* for a mortal with God, and as _⌊a human_⌋* for his friend.

⁵ Turn to me and be appalled, and place your hand on your mouth.

⁴ I would lay my case _⌊before him_⌋,* and I would fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I want to know the words with which he would answer me, and I want to understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his strength? No, but he himself* would give heed to me. ⁷ There an upright person could reason with him, and I would be acquitted forever by my judge.

⁹ Officials refrained from talking, and they laid their hand on their mouth.

³⁷ I would give him an account of my steps; I would approach him like a noble.

⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

⁹ I am mute. I do not open my mouth, for you, yourself, have done it.

⁴ Against you, only you, I have sinned and have done this evil* in your eyes, so that you are correct when you speak, you are blameless when you judge. ⁵ Behold, in iniquity I was born, and in sin my mother conceived me.

³² If you have been foolish by exalting yourself, and if you have devised evil, put your hand to your mouth.

⁵ And I said, "Woe to me! For I am destroyed!* For I am a man _⌊of unclean lips_⌋,* and I am living among* a people _⌊of unclean lips_⌋,* for my eyes have seen the king, Yahweh of hosts!"

⁶ All of us have wandered about like sheep; we each have turned to his own way; and Yahweh let fall on him the iniquity of us all.

⁶ And we all have become like the unclean, and all our deeds of justice like a menstrual cloth, And we all wither like a leaf, and our iniquities take us away like the wind.

⁵ we have sinned and we have done wrong and we acted wickedly and we rebelled and have been turning aside from your commandments and from your ordinances.

⁷ "_⌊Righteousness belongs to you, O Lord_⌋,* and on us is open shame, just as it is this day to the people of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, _⌊those who are near and those who are far off_⌋* in all the lands to which you have driven them,* because of their infidelity which they displayed against you.

¹⁶ The nations will see and be ashamed because of all their might. They will lay the hand on the mouth; their ears will be deaf.

²⁰ But Yahweh is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him."

¹³ Be silent, _⌊all people_⌋,* before Yahweh, for he is roused from _⌊his holy dwelling_⌋."*

⁸ And when he* saw it,* Simon Peter fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, Lord, because I am _⌊a sinful man_⌋!"*

¹⁸ I will set out and* go to my father and will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and _⌊in your sight_⌋!* ¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called your son! Make me like one of your hired workers.'

¹³ But the tax collector, standing far away, did not want even to raise his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'

¹⁵ The saying is trustworthy and worthy of all acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
