² "Shall a faultfinder contend with Shaddai? Anyone who argues with God must answer it."

¹¹ "Why did I not die at* birth? Why did I not come forth from the womb and expire? ¹² Why did the knees receive me and the breasts, that I could suck?

²⁰ "Why does he* give light to one in misery and life to those bitter of soul,

²³ Why does he* give light to a man whose way is hidden, and God has fenced him in all around?

¹² Am I the sea, or a sea monster, that you set a guard over me?

¹⁹ _⌊How long_⌋* will you not turn away from me? Or not leave me alone until I swallow* my spit? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to you, watcher of humanity? Why have you made me as a target for yourself, so that* I have become a burden to myself?* ²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression and take away my guilt? For now I shall lie in the dust, and you will seek me, but* _⌊I will be no more_⌋."*

³ If he wants to contend with him, he cannot answer him one time in a thousand.

¹⁷ who crushes me with a tempest and multiplies* my wounds without cause. ¹⁸ He will not allow me to _⌊catch_⌋* my breath; rather, he will fill me with bitterness.

³² "For* he is not a mortal like me that I can answer him, that _⌊we can come to trial together_⌋.* ³³ There is no arbiter between us that he might lay his hand on both of us. ³⁴ May he remove his rod from me, and let his dread not terrify me; ³⁵ then I would speak and not fear him,* for _⌊in myself I am not fearful_⌋.*

³ Is it good for you that you oppress, that you despise the labor of your hands, and you smile over the schemes of the wicked? ⁴ _⌊Do you have eyes of flesh_⌋?* Or _⌊do you see as human beings see_⌋?* ⁵ Are your days as the days of human beings, or your years as the days of man, ⁶ that you seek out my iniquity, and you search for my sin ⁷ because of your knowledge that I am not guilty, and there is no escaping from your hand?

¹⁴ If I had sinned, then* you would be watching me, and you would not acquit me of my guilt. ¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! But* if I am righteous, I dare not lift my head; I am filled with shame, and just look at my misery! ¹⁶ And if my head grows bold, you would hunt me as the lion in its prime; _⌊and you repeat your exploits against me_⌋.* ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and you increase your vexation against me; _⌊relief forces_⌋* are against me.

²¹ withdraw your* hand from me, and let not your* dread terrify me. ²² Then* call, and I myself* will answer; or let me speak, then* reply to me. ²³ "_⌊How many_⌋* are my iniquities and sins? Make known to me my transgression and my sin. ²⁴ Why do you* hide your* face and count me as your* enemy? ²⁵ Will you* terrify a blown leaf? And will you* pursue dry stubble? ²⁶ "Indeed, you* write bitter things against me, and you* make me reap the iniquities of my childhood. ²⁷ And you* put my feet in the block, and you* watch all my paths; you carve a mark on the soles of my feet.*

¹⁶ For then* you would count my steps, but you would not keep watch over my sin. ¹⁷ My transgression would be sealed in a bag, and you would cover over my guilt.

¹¹ God delivers me to an evil one, and he casts me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² "I was at ease, then* he broke me in two, and he seized me by my neck; then* he shattered me and set me up as a target for him. ¹³ His archers surround me; he slashes open my kidneys, and he does not have compassion; he pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breached me _⌊breach upon breach_⌋;* he rushes at me like a warrior. ¹⁵ "I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and I have inserted _⌊my pride_⌋* in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is red because of weeping, and deep shadows are on my eyelids, ¹⁷ _⌊although_⌋* violence is not on my hands, and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ "O earth, you should not cover my blood, and let there be no place* for my cry for help. ¹⁹ So now look, my witness is in the heavens, and he who vouches for me is in the heights. ²⁰ My friends scorn me; my eye pours out tears to God, ²¹ and it argues* for a mortal with God, and as _⌊a human_⌋* for his friend.

⁶ know then that God has wronged me and has surrounded me with his net. ⁷ "Look, I cry out, 'Violence!' but* I am not answered; I cry out, but* there is no justice. ⁸ He has walled up my way so that* I cannot pass; and he has set darkness upon my paths. ⁹ He has taken my glory from me, and he has removed the crown of* my head. ¹⁰ He has broken me down all around, and I am gone. And he has uprooted my hope like a tree, ¹¹ and he has kindled his wrath against me, and _⌊he has counted me as one of his foes_⌋.*

² "_⌊As God lives_⌋,* he has removed my justice, and Shaddai has made my inner self* bitter.

²¹ You have turned cruel to me; you persecute me with your hand's might.

¹³ Why do you contend against him, that he will not answer all a person's words?

¹⁰ Whatever is—it was already determined, _⌊what will be—it has already been decided_⌋.* As for man, he cannot argue against what is more powerful than him.

¹⁴ With whom has he consulted, that* he enlightened him* and taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and made the way of understanding known to him?

⁹ Woe to the one who strives with his _⌊maker_⌋,* a potsherd among* potsherds of earth! Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, 'What are you making?' and 'Your work has no hands'? ¹⁰ Woe to the one who says to a father, 'What you are begetting?' or* to a woman, 'With what are you in labor?'" ¹¹ Thus says Yahweh, the holy one of Israel, and its _⌊maker_⌋:* "Ask me of the things to come _⌊about_⌋* my children, and you command me about the work of my hands.

⁸ he who obtains rights for me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand together. Who is the master of my judgment? Let him approach me.

² "_⌊What do you mean by_⌋* quoting this proverb about the land of Israel, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'The fathers, they ate unripe fruit, and the teeth of the child became blunt.'*

¹¹ And when they* received it,* they began to complain* against the master of the house,

¹⁹ Therefore you will say to me, "Why then does he still find fault? For who has resisted* his will? ²⁰ On the contrary, O man, who are you who answers back to God? Will what is molded say to the one who molded it, "Why did you make me like this"?* ²¹ Or does the potter not have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump a vessel that is for _⌊honorable use_⌋* and one that is for _⌊ordinary use_⌋*? ²² And what if God, wanting to demonstrate his wrath and to make known his power, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? ²³ And he did so* in order that he could make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy that he prepared beforehand for glory,

³⁴ "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?* ³⁵ Or who has given in advance to him, and it will be paid back to him?"* ³⁶ For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory for eternity! Amen.

¹⁶ "For who has known the mind of the Lord; who has advised him?"* But we have the mind of Christ.

²² Or are we attempting to provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than he is, are we?*
