² Yahweh looks down from heaven upon the children of humankind to see whether there is one who has insight, one who cares about God.

⁷ The law of Yahweh is perfect, reviving life.* The testimony of Yahweh is firm, making wise the simple. ⁸ The precepts of Yahweh are right, making the heart rejoice. The command of Yahweh is pure, enlightening the eyes.

¹²⁸ Therefore all your precepts of everything I regard as right; I hate every false way.

O Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me. ² You know my sitting down and my rising up. You understand my thought from afar. ³ You search out* my wandering and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. ⁴ For there is not a word yet on my tongue, but behold, O Yahweh, you know it completely.

²¹ For before the eyes of Yahweh are _⌊human ways_⌋,* and all his paths he examines.

³ In every place, the eyes of Yahweh keep watch over the evil and the good.

¹³ He who conceals his transgression will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes will obtain mercy.

⁸ Do not be surprised if you see the poor being oppressed with violence or do not see justice and righteousness in the province. For one official is watched by a higher official, and there are even higher officials over them!

⁸ The priests did not say, 'Where is Yahweh?' and those who handle the law did not know me, and the shepherds have _⌊rebelled against me_⌋,* and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and they went after things which do not profit.

¹³ Only acknowledge your guilt, that against Yahweh your God you have rebelled, and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every leafy tree, and you have not obeyed my voice,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh."

²⁴ Or can a person hide himself in secret places and I cannot see him?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "Do I not fill up the heaven and the earth?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁸ Indeed I heard Ephraim pitying themselves, 'You disciplined me, and I was disciplined, like a calf that is not trained. Bring me back and let me return, for you are Yahweh my God. ¹⁹ For after my turning back I repented, and after coming to understand I struck my thigh. I was ashamed and also humiliated, because I bore the disgrace of my youth.'

²⁶ For what will a person be benefited if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for his life?

¹⁸ I will set out and* go to my father and will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and _⌊in your sight_⌋!* ¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called your son! Make me like one of your hired workers.' ²⁰ And he set out and* came to his own father. But while* he was still a long way away, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran _⌊and embraced him_⌋* and kissed him. ²¹ And his* son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and _⌊in your sight_⌋!* I am no longer worthy to be called your son!' ²² But his* father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out the best robe and put it* on him, and put a ring on his finger* and sandals on his* feet!

¹³ But the tax collector, standing far away, did not want even to raise his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'

²¹ Therefore what sort of fruit did you have then, about which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

¹² So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. ¹³ Therefore, did that which is good become death to me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be recognized as sin, producing death through what is good for me, in order that sin might become sinful to an extraordinary degree through the commandment. ¹⁴ For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, _⌊sold into slavery to sin_⌋*.

¹⁶ But if what I do not want to do, this I do, I agree with the law that it is good.

²² For I joyfully agree with the law of God in my inner person,

⁸ If we say that we do not have sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, so that he will forgive us our* sins and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
