¹⁴ _⌊At dusk_⌋* the murderer rises; he kills the needy and the poor, and in the night he is like a* thief.

¹⁴ And it happened in the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab, and he sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ He had written in the letter, "Put Uriah in the front, in the face of the fiercest fighting, then draw back from behind him so that he may be struck down and die." ¹⁶ _⌊When Joab was besieging_⌋* the city, he put Uriah toward the place which he knew _⌊there were valiant warriors_⌋.* ¹⁷ The men of the city came out and fought with Joab. Some from the army from the servants of David fell; Uriah the Hittite also died.

⁸ He sits in ambush in villages; in the hiding places he kills the innocent. His eyes _⌊lurk_⌋* for the helpless. ⁹ He lies in ambush _⌊secretly,_⌋* like a lion in a thicket. He lies in ambush to seize the poor; he seizes the poor by catching him in his net. ¹⁰ He is crushed;* he is bowed down;* so* the helpless host* falls by his _⌊might_⌋.*

¹ Woe to those who plan wickedness and evil deeds upon their beds! In the light of the morning they did it, because they have power in their hands. ² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance.

³⁹ But understand this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.

⁷ Therefore do not be sharers* with them, ⁸ for you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live like children of light ⁹ (for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), ¹⁰ trying to learn what is well-pleasing to the Lord. ¹¹ And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even expose them.

² for you yourselves well know that the day of the Lord is coming in the same way as a thief in the night.

³ Therefore remember how you have received and heard, and observe it, and repent. If therefore you are not on the alert, I will come like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come against you.
