¹² "And a word came stealing to me, and my ear received the whisper from it.

⁹ He is doing great and _⌊unsearchable_⌋* things, marvelous things _⌊without number_⌋*— ¹⁰ the one who is giving rain on the _⌊surface of_⌋* the earth and is sending water on the _⌊surface of_⌋* the fields, ¹¹ to set the lowly on high, and those mourning are lifted to safety. ¹² He is frustrating the devices of the crafty, and their hands do not achieve success. ¹³ He is capturing the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are rushed. ¹⁴ In the daytime they meet with darkness, and they grope at noon* as in the night. ¹⁵ And* he saves from the sword of* their mouth, _⌊even_⌋* the poor from the hand of the strong. ¹⁶ So* there is hope* for the powerless, and wickedness shuts its mouth.

²⁷ "Look, we have searched this out—it is true; hear it and know it _⌊yourself_⌋."*

⁸ "Indeed,* please inquire of former generations, and consider _⌊what their ancestors have found_⌋,* ⁹ for we are of yesterday, and we do not know, for our days on earth are a shadow. ¹⁰ Will they themselves* not teach you and _⌊tell you_⌋* and _⌊utter_⌋* words from their heart?

⁹ Who among all of these does not know that Yahweh's hand has done this? ¹⁰ In whose hand is the life of all living things and _⌊the breath of every human being_⌋?* ¹¹ Does not the ear test words and the palate taste food for itself? ¹² Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding is in length of days. ¹³ "With him are wisdom and powerful deeds, and to him belong counsel and understanding. ¹⁴ If he tears down, then* it will not be rebuilt; if he shuts a man in, then* he cannot be freed. ¹⁵ Look, if he withholds the water,* then* they dry up; and if he sends them out, then* they overwhelm the land. ¹⁶ "Strength and sound wisdom are with him; the deceived and the deceiver are his.* ¹⁷ He leads counselors away stripped, and he makes fools of judges. ¹⁸ He loosens the fetters of kings, and he binds a loincloth on their loins. ¹⁹ He leads priests away stripped, and he overthrows _⌊the members of ancient families_⌋.* ²⁰ He deprives the trustworthy of speech, and he takes away the discretion of elders. ²¹ He pours contempt on noblemen, and he loosens the girdle of the mighty. ²² "He uncovers mysteries out of darkness, and he brings deep shadow to the light. ²³ He makes the nations great, then* he destroys them; he expands the nations, then* he guides them. ²⁴ He strips away the insight of the heads of the earth's people, and he makes them wander in _⌊a pathless wasteland_⌋.* ²⁵ They grope in the dark _⌊without_⌋* light, and he makes them stagger like a* drunkard.

¹⁷ "I will show you, listen to me; and what I have seen, I will tell*— ¹⁸ what wise men have told, and they have not hidden that which is from their ancestors,

³ 'Who is this darkening counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I uttered, but* I did not understand; _⌊things too wonderful for me_⌋,* but I did not know. ⁴ 'Hear and I will speak; I will question you, then* inform me.' ⁵ By the ear's hearing I heard of you, but* now my eye has seen you. ⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

³ that we have heard and known, and our ancestors* have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their children,* telling the next generation the praises of Yahweh, and his power and his wonders that he has done.

³ what we have seen and heard, we announce to you also, in order that you also may have fellowship with us, and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

³ _⌊I also have insight_⌋* like you;* I am not more inferior than you.* And _⌊who does not know things like these_⌋?*

⁸ Have you listened in God's confidential discussion? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? ⁹ What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us?

³⁵ 'Job speaks without knowledge, and his words are without insight.

¹⁶ _⌊therefore_⌋* Job opens his mouth in empty talk— without knowledge he multiplies words."

² Listen carefully to his voice's thunder and the rumbling that goes out from his mouth.

⁴ "Look, I am insignificant. What shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. ⁵ Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; even* twice, but* I will not proceed."

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "_⌊My wrath has been kindled_⌋* against you* and against the two of your friends, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has.

¹ Now concerning food sacrificed to idols, we know that "we all have knowledge."* Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. ² If anyone thinks he knows anything, he has not yet known as it is necessary to know.

⁴ For if the one who comes proclaims another Jesus whom we have not proclaimed, or you receive a different spirit which you did not receive, or a different gospel which you did not accept, you put up with it well enough! ⁵ For I consider myself in no way to be inferior to the preeminent apostles.*

¹⁶ Again I say, do not let anyone think I am foolish. But indeed, if you do, accept me even as foolish, in order that I also may boast a little. ¹⁷ What I am saying in this project of boasting, I am not saying as the Lord would say, but as in foolishness. ¹⁸ Since many are boasting according to human standards, I also will boast.

¹¹ I have become a fool! You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you, for I am in no way inferior to the preeminent apostles,* even if I am nothing.

³ If he wants to contend with him, he cannot answer him one time in a thousand.

¹⁴ _⌊How much less_⌋* can I myself* answer him? How can I choose my words with him, ¹⁵ whom I cannot answer, even though I am righteous? From* my judge I must implore grace.

³⁴ May he remove his rod from me, and let his dread not terrify me; ³⁵ then I would speak and not fear him,* for _⌊in myself I am not fearful_⌋.*

⁵ But,* _⌊O that_⌋* God might speak, and that he would open his lips to you,

¹⁵ Look,* though he kill me, I will hope in* him; however, I will defend my ways _⌊before him_⌋.*

²² Then* call, and I myself* will answer; or let me speak, then* reply to me.

³ _⌊O that_⌋* I knew and that I might find him; O that I might come to his dwelling. ⁴ I would lay my case _⌊before him_⌋,* and I would fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I want to know the words with which he would answer me, and I want to understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his strength? No, but he himself* would give heed to me. ⁷ There an upright person could reason with him, and I would be acquitted forever by my judge.

³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written,

¹⁸ "Come now, and let us argue," says Yahweh. "Even though your sins are like scarlet, they will be white like snow; even though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. ¹⁹ If you are willing and you are obedient, you shall eat the good of the land. ²⁰ But if you refuse and you rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword.
For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken."

²¹ "Present your legal case," says Yahweh. "Bring your evidence," says the king of Jacob.

¹ You will be in the right, O Yahweh, when I complain to you. Even so, let me speak my claims with you. Why does the way of the wicked succeed? All those who deal treacherously with treachery are at ease. ² Not only do you plant them, they take root. They grow, but also they produce fruit. You are near in their mouths, but far from their _⌊inmost beings_⌋.*

² Hear, O mountains, the indictment of Yahweh, and you eternal foundations of the earth, for Yahweh has an indictment against his people, and against Israel he contends.

¹⁶ "You shall not testify against your neighbor with a false witness.

⁷ "_⌊Think_⌋* now, who has perished who is innocent? Or* where are the upright destroyed? ⁸ Just as I have seen, plowers of mischief and sowers of trouble will reap it. ⁹ By* the breath of God they perish, and by* the blast of his anger they come to an end. ¹⁰ The roar of the lion and the voice of a lion in its prime, and the teeth of the young lions are broken. ¹¹ The lion is perishing without* prey, and the lion's whelps are scattered.

¹ "Call now, is there anyone answering you? And to which of the holy ones will you turn? ² For vexation will slay the fool, and jealousy will kill the simple. ³ I have seen a fool taking root, but* suddenly I cursed his dwelling. ⁴ His children are far from deliverance, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer— ⁵ whose harvest the hungry eats, and he takes it _⌊from behind_⌋* the thorns; and the thirsty pants after their wealth.

²¹ "For now you* have become _⌊such_⌋;* you see terrors, and you fear.

³ Does God pervert justice, _⌊or_⌋* Shaddai pervert righteousness? ⁴ If your children sinned against him, then* he sent them into the _⌊power_⌋* of their transgression.

² "I have heard many things like these; all of you are _⌊miserable comforters_⌋.*

⁵ Furthermore,* the light of the wicked is put out, and the flame of his fire will not shine. ⁶ The light becomes dark in his tent, and his lamp above him is put out. ⁷ "_⌊His strong steps_⌋* are shortened, and his own schemes* throw him down, ⁸ for he is thrust into a net by his feet, and he walks into a pitfall. ⁹ A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare takes hold of him. ¹⁰ His rope is hidden in the ground, and his trap on the path. ¹¹ "Sudden terrors terrify him all around, and they chase him at his heels. ¹² His wealth will become hunger, and disaster is ready for his stumbling. ¹³ It consumes parts of his skin; the firstborn of death consumes his limbs. ¹⁴ He is torn from his tent _⌊in which he trusted_⌋,* and it brought him to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ "_⌊Nothing_⌋* remains for him in his tent; sulfur is scattered upon his dwelling place. ¹⁶ His roots dry up _⌊below_⌋,* and its branches* wither away above.* ¹⁷ His remembrance perishes from the earth, and there is not a name for him on the street. ¹⁸ "They thrust him from light into darkness, and they drive him out from the world. ¹⁹ There is no offspring for him nor* a descendant among his people, and there is not a survivor in his abode. ²⁰ Those of the west are appalled over _⌊his fate_⌋,* and those of the east _⌊are seized with horror_⌋.* ²¹ Surely these are the dwellings of the godless, and this is the dwelling place of him who knows not God."

²⁷ "Look, I know your* thoughts and the schemes you devise against me. ²⁸ For you say, 'Where is the nobleman's house, and where are _⌊the tents in which the wicked dwell_⌋?'* ²⁹ Do you not ask those traveling the roads, and do you not take notice of their accounts? ³⁰ Indeed, the wicked is spared from the day of disaster; he is delivered from the day of wrath. ³¹ Who denounces his way to his face? And who repays him for what he has done? ³² When* he is brought to the grave, then* someone stands guard over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley are sweet to him; everyone will follow after him, and _⌊before_⌋* him _⌊they are innumerable_⌋.* ³⁴ So* how will you comfort me with emptiness, when* fraud is left in your answers?"

⁶ "Indeed, you have required a pledge from your family for nothing, and you have stripped off the clothes of the naked. ⁷ You have given no water for the weary to drink, and you withheld food from the hungry. ⁸ And the land _⌊belongs to the man of power_⌋,* and _⌊the favored_⌋* lives in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of orphans were crushed. ¹⁰ Therefore trapping nets are all around you, and panic suddenly terrifies you, ¹¹ or it is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you. ¹² "Is not God in the height of the heavens? But* see how lofty are _⌊the highest stars_⌋.* ¹³ And you ask, 'What does God know? Can he judge through deep gloom? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering for him, so that he does not see; and he walks about on the dome of heaven.' ¹⁵ Will you keep to the way of old that the people of mischief have trod, ¹⁶ who were snatched away _⌊before their time_⌋,* whose foundation was washed away by a current? ¹⁷ Those who said to God, 'Turn away from us,' and 'What can Shaddai do to us?' ¹⁸ Yet* he himself* filled up their houses with good things, but* the schemes of the wicked are repugnant to me. ¹⁹ The righteous see, and they rejoice, but* the innocent one mocks at them. ²⁰ _⌊Surely_⌋* our foe perishes, and fire has consumed their remainder.* ²¹ "Please reconcile yourself with him, and be at peace; _⌊in this way_⌋,* good will come to you. ²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and place his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to Shaddai, you will be restored; if you remove wickedness from your tent, ²⁴ and if you put gold ore in the dust, and the gold of Ophir in the rock of wadis, ²⁵ then* Shaddai will be your gold ore and _⌊your precious silver_⌋.* ²⁶ Indeed, then you will delight yourself in Shaddai, and _⌊you will expect that God will be good to you_⌋.* ²⁷ You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will pay your vows. ²⁸ And you will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways. ²⁹ When they are humiliated, _⌊you say_⌋,* 'It is pride,' for* he saves _⌊the humble_⌋.* ³⁰ He will deliver the guilty, and he will escape because of the cleanness of your hands."

⁶⁹ The arrogant smear me with lies;* I keep your precepts with my whole heart.

¹⁴ And they have treated the wound of my people lightly, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Peace, peace,' but there is no peace.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no healer there? Why, then, has the healing of the daughter of my people not been restored?

³² Look, I am against those who prophesy dreams of lies,"* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and tell them, and they caused my people to err through their lies, and in their recklessness, when I myself have not sent them nor commanded them, so they profit not this people at all," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹³ There is no one who pleads your cause, for your boil there is no healing for you.

¹¹ Go up to Gilead and take balm, O virgin of the daughter of Egypt. _⌊In vain_⌋* you make use of many medicines; there is no healing for you.

⁴ The weak you have not strengthened, and the sick you have not healed, and _⌊with respect to_⌋* the hurt* you have not bound them up, and you have not brought back the scattered, and you have not sought the lost, but rather you ruled over them with force* and with ruthlessness.

¹³ And when Ephraim saw his illness, and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria, he sent to the great king.* But he was unable to cure you and heal your wound.

¹⁷ And when* Jesus heard it*, he said to them, "Those who are healthy do not have need of a physician, but those _⌊who are sick_⌋.* I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

²⁶ And she had endured many things under many physicians, and had spent _⌊all that she had_⌋* and had received no help at all, but instead _⌊became worse_⌋.*

³ Should your loose talk put people to silence? _⌊And when you mock, shall no one put you to shame_⌋?*

¹³ "_⌊Let me have silence_⌋,* and I myself* will speak, and let come over me whatever may.

³ Is there a limit to windy words? What provokes you that you answer?

² "_⌊How long_⌋* _⌊will you* hunt for words_⌋?* Consider,* and afterward we shall speak.

² "_⌊How long_⌋* will you* torment me* and crush me with words?

² "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your* consolation. ³ Bear with me, and I myself* will speak; then* after my speaking you can mock.

¹ Then these three men ceased from answering Job because he was righteous in his own eyes.

²⁸ Even a fool who keeps silent _⌊shall be considered wise_⌋;* he who closes his lips is intelligent.

³ For a dream comes with many cares, and the voice of a fool with many words.

¹³ Therefore, whoever has insight will keep silent in that time, for it is a time of evil.

¹⁹ Understand this, my dear brothers: every person must be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,

⁷ And they told Jotham, and he went up and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and _⌊he cried out loud_⌋* and said to them, "Listen to me, lords of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.

¹ "But now, please hear my speeches,* Job, and hear* all my words. ² Please look, I open my mouth; my tongue in my mouth speaks. ³ My words declare my heart's uprightness, and my lips sincerely speak _⌊what my lips know_⌋.*

² "Hear my words, you wise men, and listen to me, you who know,

⁶ Listen! For noble things I will speak, and upright things from the opening of my lips. ⁷ My mouth will utter truth, and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

⁷ "_⌊Think_⌋* now, who has perished who is innocent? Or* where are the upright destroyed?

² "Should an abundance of words go unanswered, or _⌊a man full of talk_⌋* be vindicated?* ³ Should your loose talk put people to silence? _⌊And when you mock, shall no one put you to shame_⌋?* ⁴ For you say, 'My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight.'

⁵ He denounces friends for reward, so* his children's eyes will fail.

⁴ my lips surely will not speak falseness, and my tongue surely will not utter deceit.

²¹ _⌊Please let me not show partiality to anyone_⌋,* and let me not show flattery to human beings, ²² for I do not know how _⌊to flatter_⌋,* else my Maker would _⌊soon_⌋* put an end to me.

⁴ for truly my words* are not falsehood; one who has perfect knowledge is with you.*

² _⌊They will expel you from the synagogue_⌋,* but an hour is coming that everyone who kills you will think they are offering service to God.

⁵ But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? God, who inflicts wrath, is not unjust, is he? (I am speaking according to a human perspective.) ⁶ May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? ⁷ But if by my lying, the truth of God abounded to his glory, why am I also still condemned as a sinner? ⁸ And why not (as we are slandered, and as some affirm that we say), "Let us do evil, in order that good may come of it? Their* condemnation is just!

² but we have renounced shameful hidden things, not behaving with craftiness or adulterating the word of God, but with the open proclamation of the truth commending ourselves to every person's conscience before God.

² You will not _⌊follow_⌋* a majority* for evil, and you will not testify concerning a legal dispute to turn aside after a majority* to pervert justice. ³ You will not be partial to a powerless person* in his legal dispute.

¹⁵ " 'You* shall not do injustice in judgment; _⌊you* shall not show partiality to the powerless_⌋;* you* shall not give preference _⌊to the powerful_⌋;* you* shall judge your* fellow citizen with justice.

²¹ _⌊Please let me not show partiality to anyone_⌋,* and let me not show flattery to human beings,

¹⁹ who _⌊shows no partiality to officials_⌋* and who _⌊does not take note of the noble more than of the insignificant_⌋,* for all of them are the work of his hands?

²³ These sayings are also for the wise: _⌊Partiality_⌋* in judgment is not good.

⁹ "And in turn I have made you despised and humbled before all the people, inasmuch as you are not keeping* my way, but are _⌊favoring your own instruction_⌋."*

¹⁶ "Strength and sound wisdom are with him; the deceived and the deceiver are his.*

² _⌊Surely_⌋* mockery is with me, and my eye _⌊rests_⌋* on their provocation.

³⁶ Would that Job were tested up to the end because his answers are like those from men of mischief,

²¹ would not God discover this, for he knows the secrets of the heart?

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

²² And now you must not scoff, or your bonds will be strong,
for I have heard from the Lord, Yahweh of hosts:
complete destruction decreed upon all the land.

¹⁰ I, Yahweh, examine the _⌊mind_⌋,* I test the _⌊heart_⌋,* and give to each one according to his way, according to the fruit of his deeds.

⁷ Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked, for whatever a person sows, this he will also reap, ⁸ because the one who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "_⌊My wrath has been kindled_⌋* against you* and against the two of your friends, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has. ⁸ _⌊So then_⌋,* take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will pray for you,* for _⌊I will certainly accept his prayer_⌋,* so that it will not be done with you* according to your folly, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has."

²¹ These things you have done, and I have been silent; You imagined that I was just like you. I will rebuke you and present an argument before your eyes. ²² Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there will be none to deliver.

² "How long will you judge unjustly and _⌊show favoritism to the wicked_⌋?* Selah

⁹ But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and thus* are convicted by the law as transgressors.

¹⁶ Terror and dread fell on them; at the greatness of your arm they became silent like the stone, until your people passed by, Yahweh, until the people whom you bought passed by.

²¹ withdraw your* hand from me, and let not your* dread terrify me.

²³ Indeed, the disaster from God was a dread for me, and _⌊I was powerless_⌋* because of his majesty.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of you, and I am afraid of your judgments.

¹³ You shall regard Yahweh of hosts as holy, and he is your* fear, and he is your dread.

²² Do you not revere me?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "Do you not tremble _⌊before me_⌋?* For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea, _⌊as an everlasting limit_⌋,* and it cannot pass over it, and they rise and fall loudly, but they cannot prevail, and its waves roar, but they cannot pass over it.

¹⁰ But Yahweh is the true God, he is the living God, and _⌊an everlasting king_⌋.* Because of his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his anger.

²⁸ And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul, but instead be afraid of the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

³ And they were singing the song of Moses, the slave of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying:
"Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God All-Powerful; righteous and true are your ways, King of the ages!* ⁴ Who would never fear, Lord, and glorify your name? For only you are holy, because all the nations* will come and worship before you, because your righteous deeds have been revealed."

⁷ when* Yahweh God formed the man* of dust from the ground, and he blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

²⁷ Then Abraham answered and said, "Look, please, I was bold to speak to my Lord, but I am dust and ashes.

¹⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in the scroll and _⌊recite it in the hearing of_⌋* Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens."

¹⁹ How much more dwellers in clay houses, whose foundation is in the dust? They are crushed like a moth.

¹⁷ His remembrance perishes from the earth, and there is not a name for him on the street.

¹⁶ The face of Yahweh is against evildoers, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

¹² But you, O Yahweh, abide* forever, and your remembrance* _⌊from generation to generation_⌋.*

¹⁵ Let them be before Yahweh continually, that he may cut off their* memory from the earth,

⁷ The memory of righteousness is like a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.

¹⁴ The dead do not live; dead spirits do not rise because you have punished and destroyed them, and you have destroyed all memory of them.

¹ For we know that if our earthly house, the tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens.

⁹ that* God would decide that* he would crush me, that he would let loose his hand and _⌊kill me_⌋.* ¹⁰ But* it will still be my consolation, and I would recoil in _⌊unrelenting_⌋* pain, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

³ Bear with me, and I myself* will speak; then* after my speaking you can mock.

³ I saw that you would not deliver us; _⌊I risked my own life_⌋,* and I crossed over to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and Yahweh gave them into my hand. Why have you come up to me this day to fight against me?"

⁵ He put his life in his hand and attacked the Philistine, and Yahweh brought about a great victory for all of Israel, and you saw it and rejoiced! Now why should you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?"

¹⁸ Please look,* I have prepared my case; I know that I myself* will be vindicated.

² "Shall a faultfinder contend with Shaddai? Anyone who argues with God must answer it."

⁸ "Indeed, would you annul my justice? Would you condemn me, so that you might be righteous?

⁴ Even when I walk in a dark valley, I fear no evil because you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

³² By his evildoing, the wicked will be overthrown, and the righteous will find refuge in his death.

³⁸ For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

²⁰ that* if our heart condemns us, that God is greater than our heart and knows all things.

² Yah* is my strength and song, and he has become my salvation;* this is my God, and I will praise him—the God of my father—and I will exalt him.

¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God; and the hope of the godless will perish,

⁸ for what is the hope of the godless when he cuts them off, when God takes away his life? ⁹ Will God hear his cry of distress when distress comes upon him? ¹⁰ Or, in Shaddai will he find delight? Will he call upon God at all times?

Yahweh is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the refuge of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

⁶ Only he is my rock and my salvation, my high stronghold; I shall not be shaken. ⁷ On God rests my salvation and my glory; God* is my strong rock, my refuge.

¹⁴ Yah* is my strength and my song,* and he has become my salvation.*

²¹ I will give thanks to you for you have answered me, and you have become my salvation.*

¹ And you will say on that day, "I will give you thanks, Yahweh, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, and you comforted me. ² Look! God is my salvation; I will trust, and I will not be afraid, for my strength and might is Yah, Yahweh; and he has become salvation for me."

¹⁴ Sinners are afraid in Zion; trembling has seized the godless: "Who of us can _⌊live_⌋* with devouring fire? Who of us can _⌊live_⌋* with everlasting consuming hearths?"

²³ Surely, an illusion comes from the hills, the turmoil on the mountains. Surely, in Yahweh our God is the salvation of Israel.

⁴⁷ For so the Lord has commanded us:
'I have appointed you _⌊to be_⌋* a light for the Gentiles, _⌊that you would bring_⌋* salvation to the end of the earth.'*

⁶ Please hear my argument, and listen attentively to the pleadings of my lips.

² "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your* consolation.

¹ "But now, please hear my speeches,* Job, and hear* all my words.

² "Truly I know that it is so, but* how can a human being be just before God? ³ If he wants to contend with him, he cannot answer him one time in a thousand.

³³ Who will bring charges against God's elect? God is the one who justifies. ³⁴ Who is the one who condemns? Christ* is the one who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

¹² For our reason for boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, in holiness* and purity of motive from God, not* in merely human wisdom, but by the grace of God.

⁸ Your hands fashioned me and made me* _⌊altogether_⌋,* then* you destroyed me.

⁵ If indeed you* must magnify yourselves against me, and you* must let my disgrace argue against me,

⁵ "If you are able, answer me. Present your argument _⌊before me_⌋;* take your stand. ⁶ Look, before God _⌊I am like you_⌋;* I myself was also formed from clay. ⁷ Look, dread of me should not terrify you, and my hand will not be heavy upon you.

⁷ And the Lord Yahweh helps me,
therefore I have not been put to shame; therefore I have set my face like flint. And I know that I shall not be ashamed; ⁸ he who obtains rights for me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand together. Who is the master of my judgment? Let him approach me.

⁹ But if I say, "I will not mention him and I will no longer speak in his name," then it becomes in my heart like a fire burning, locked up in my bones, and I struggle to contain it,* and I am not able.

³³ Who will bring charges against God's elect? God is the one who justifies.

⁸ Then* they heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden _⌊at the windy time of day_⌋.* And the man* and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. ⁹ And Yahweh God called to the man* and said to him, "Where are you?" ¹⁰ And he replied,* "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid because I am naked, so I hid myself."

¹² even the darkness is not too dark for you,* and the night shines as the day— the darkness and the light are alike for you.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth, and the most important people, and the military leaders, and the rich, and the powerful, and every slave and free person hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, ¹⁶ And they said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,

³⁴ May he remove his rod from me, and let his dread not terrify me;

²⁰ Are not my days few? Let him leave me alone; let him turn from me, and let me rejoice a little.

¹¹ Will not his majesty terrify you,* and his dread fall upon you?*

¹⁵ Will you keep to the way of old that the people of mischief have trod, ¹⁶ who were snatched away _⌊before their time_⌋,* whose foundation was washed away by a current? ¹⁷ Those who said to God, 'Turn away from us,' and 'What can Shaddai do to us?'

⁷ Look, dread of me should not terrify you, and my hand will not be heavy upon you.

¹⁰ Remove from me your affliction. By the opposition of your hand I perish.

¹⁶ If I summon him, and he should answer me, I do not believe that he will listen to my voice—

³² "For* he is not a mortal like me that I can answer him, that _⌊we can come to trial together_⌋.*

¹⁵ You would call, and I myself* would answer you; you would long for the work of your hand.

³ _⌊Prepare yourself for a difficult task like a man_⌋,* and I will question you, and you shall declare to me.

⁵ Is not your wickedness great, and there is no end to your iniquities?

⁸ "And if they are tied up with fetters, if they are caught in the cords of misery, ⁹ then* he declares their work to them, and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly.

²⁰ If we had forgotten the name of our God, or had spread out our hands in prayer to a foreign god, ²¹ would not God discover this, for he knows the secrets of the heart?

²⁰ So he said, 'I will hide my face from them; I will see what will be their end, for they are a generation of perversity, _⌊children in whom there is no faithfulness_⌋.*

¹⁶ Then Samuel said, "Why do you ask me, since Yahweh has turned away from you and has become your enemy?

² I will say to God, 'You should not condemn me; let me know why you contend against me.

⁹ His wrath has torn, and he has been hostile toward me; he gnashed at me with his teeth. My foe sharpens his eyes against me.

¹¹ and he has kindled his wrath against me, and _⌊he has counted me as one of his foes_⌋.*

² "_⌊O that I were_⌋* as in the months before, as in the days when God watched over me, ³ when his shining lamp was over my head— by his light I walked through darkness—

²¹ You have turned cruel to me; you persecute me with your hand's might.

¹⁰ Look, he finds fault against me; he reckons me as his enemy;

¹ Why, O Yahweh, do you stand far off? Why do you hide* during times of distress?

How long, O Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

²⁴ Why do you hide your face? Have you forgotten our misery and our oppression?

⁶ I remember my song in the night. With my heart I meditate, and my spirit searches to understand. ⁷ Will the Lord reject us forever, and will he never be pleased with us again? ⁸ Has his loyal love ceased forever? Is his promise* ended throughout generations? ⁹ Has God forgotten to have compassion? Or has he closed off his mercies in anger? Selah

¹⁴ Why do you reject my soul, O Yahweh? Why do you hide your face from me?

¹⁷ And I will wait for Yahweh, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will await him.

⁵ The Lord has become like an enemy; he has destroyed Israel; he has destroyed all its citadel fortresses;* he has ruined all its fortifications and multiplied lamentation and mourning in the daughter of Judah.

¹⁵ And do not consider him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

¹⁴ After whom did the king of Israel go out? After whom are you pursuing? After a dead dog? After one flea?

³ Even on such a one you fix your eyes, and you bring me into judgment with you.

¹⁸ How often are they like straw _⌊before_⌋* the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away?

¹³ The nations roar like the roar of many waters, but he will rebuke him, and he will flee far away. And they are chased like chaff of the mountains before the wind and like tumbleweed before the storm.

²⁰ A crushed reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not extinguish, until he brings justice to victory.

Selah ⁸ You have removed my acquaintances far from me. You have made me detestable* to them. I am confined and cannot go out. ⁹ My eye languishes from misery. I call on you, O Yahweh, every day; I spread out my hands* to you. ¹⁰ Do you work wonders* for the dead? Or do the departed spirits* rise up to praise you? Selah ¹¹ Is your loyal love told in the grave, or your faithfulness in the underworld?* ¹² Are your wonders* known in the darkness, or your righteousness* in the land of forgetfulness? ¹³ But as for me, I cry for help to you, O Yahweh, and in the morning my prayer comes before you. ¹⁴ Why do you reject my soul, O Yahweh? Why do you hide your face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and perishing from my youth. I bear your terrors. I am distraught.* ¹⁶ Your burning anger has passed over me; your sudden fears have destroyed me. ¹⁷ They surround me like water all the day; they circle about me altogether. ¹⁸ You have removed loved one and friend far from me, my acquaintances far from my darkness.

¹¹ and you groan at your end, when your flesh and body are consumed, ¹² and say "How I hated discipline, and I despised reproof!" ¹³ and "I did not listen to the voice of my teachers, and I did not incline my ear to my instructors!

¹⁹ For after my turning back I repented, and after coming to understand I struck my thigh. I was ashamed and also humiliated, because I bore the disgrace of my youth.'

⁵ And a certain man was there who had been thirty-eight years in his sickness.

⁶ that you seek out my iniquity, and you search for my sin

¹⁶ For then* you would count my steps, but you would not keep watch over my sin.

¹¹ he puts my feet in the block; he watches all my paths.'

²² He goes after her suddenly; like an ox to the slaughter he goes, and like a stag to the instruction of a fool,

²⁴ Having received such an order, _⌊he_⌋* put them in the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.*

²⁹ I am a companion for the jackals and a companion for _⌊ostriches_⌋.* ³⁰ My skin turns black on me, and my bones burn with heat.

¹¹ When with rebukes you chastise a man for sin, you* _⌊consume_⌋* like a moth his delightful things. Surely everyone is a mere vapor.* Selah
