²² And they will be gathered in a gathering, like a prisoner _⌊in_⌋* a pit. And they will be shut _⌊in_⌋* a prison and be punished _⌊after_⌋* many days.

¹⁶ But these five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. ¹⁷ And it was told to Joshua, saying, "The five kings were found hidden in the cave at Makkedah."

²² And Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring to me those five kings from the cave." ²³ And they did so, and brought him these five kings from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. ²⁴ And when they brought these kings to Joshua, Joshua called all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of _⌊the fighting men_⌋* who had gone with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." So they came near and put their feet on their necks. ²⁵ And Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed! Be strong and bold, for thus Yahweh will do to all your enemies whom you are about to fight. ²⁶ And after this Joshua struck them down and killed them, and he hanged them on five trees. And they were hanging on the trees until the evening.

¹⁹ and they will enter into the caves of the rocks and into the holes of the ground from the presence of the terror of Yahweh and from the glory of his majesty _⌊when he rises_⌋* to terrify the earth.

⁴ _⌊save that they bow down under the prisoners and fall under the slain_⌋?* In all of this his anger has not turned away, and still his hand is stretched out.

¹⁷ Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, inhabitants* of the earth!

²² But* this is a people plundered and looted; all of them are trapped in holes, and they are kept hidden in houses of imprisonment. They have become like plunder, and there is no one who saves; like booty, and there is no one who says, "Restore!"

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit* of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit* there was no water,* _⌊but only_⌋* mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud. ⁷ When Ebed-melech the Cushite, _⌊a eunuch_⌋* who was in the house of the king, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the pit*—now the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin— ⁸ Ebed-melech went out from the house of the king and spoke to the king, _⌊saying_⌋,* ⁹ "My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, in that they have thrown him into the pit,* and he will die _⌊there_⌋* _⌊because of_⌋* starvation, for there is no longer any bread in the city." ¹⁰ Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Cushite, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Take _⌊with you_⌋* these thirty men and pull Jeremiah the prophet up from the pit* _⌊before_⌋* he dies." ¹¹ So Ebed-melech took the men _⌊with him_⌋* and went to the palace of the king, to a place beneath the storehouse, and he took from there _⌊rags_⌋* and _⌊worn-out clothes_⌋.* And he let them down into the pit* by ropes to Jeremiah. ¹² Then Ebed-melech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, "Please put _⌊the rags_⌋* and _⌊worn-out clothes_⌋* under the joints of your arms under the ropes," and Jeremiah did so. ¹³ And they pulled Jeremiah by the ropes and brought him up from the pit.* And Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard.

⁸ After many days you will be mustered; _⌊in the last years_⌋* you will come to a restored land from the sword, gathered from many peoples on the mountains of Israel which were as _⌊permanent ruins_⌋* but from peoples it was brought out, and they will dwell _⌊in safety_⌋,* all of them.

¹¹ As for you also, because of the blood of your covenant, I will release your prisoners from _⌊the waterless pit_⌋.*
