¹ Then Samuel said to all Israel, "Look, I have listened to your voice regarding all that you have said to me, so I have set a king over you. ² And so then here is the king walking about before you. Now I am old and gray, but my sons (look at them!) are with you; and I have walked about before you from my youth until this day. ³ Here I am! Testify against me before Yahweh and before his anointed one! Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I exploited? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe, that I may shut my eyes _⌊regarding_⌋* him?-then I will restore it to you." ⁴ Then they said, "You have not exploited us or oppressed us, and you have not taken anything from the hand of anyone." ⁵ So he said to them, "Yahweh is witness against you, and his anointed one is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand." Then they said, "He is witness." ⁶ Then Samuel said to the people, "Yahweh is witness, who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who brought your ancestors* up from the land of Egypt. ⁷ So then take your stand, so that I may judge you before Yahweh with regard to all the deeds of justice* of Yahweh that he performed with both you and your ancestors.* ⁸ "When Jacob came to Egypt, your ancestors* cried out to Yahweh, so he sent Moses and Aaron, and they brought your ancestors* out from Egypt and settled them in this place. ⁹ But they forgot Yahweh their God, so he sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the hosts of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them. ¹⁰ So they cried out to Yahweh and said, 'We have sinned, because we have forsaken Yahweh and have served the Baals* and the Ashtoreths.* But now deliver us from the hand of our enemies and we will serve you!' ¹¹ So Yahweh sent Jerub-Baal and Bedan* and Jephthah and Samuel. Then he delivered you from the hand of your enemies all around, and you lived in security. ¹² "And when you saw that Nahash, the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* was coming against you, you said to me, 'No! A king shall reign over us,' although Yahweh your God is your king. ¹³ So then look! Here is the king you have chosen, for whom you have asked! Look, Yahweh has placed a king over you! ¹⁴ If you will fear Yahweh, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not be rebellious against _⌊what Yahweh says_⌋,* and both you and the king who rules over you will follow after Yahweh your God, all will be well. ¹⁵ But, if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh, and you rebel against _⌊what Yahweh says_⌋,* then the hand of Yahweh will be against you* as it was against your ancestors.* ¹⁶ So then take your stand again and see this great thing that Yahweh is going to do before your eyes. ¹⁷ Is the wheat harvest not today? I will call out to Yahweh so that he still sends thunder and rain, so that you will know and will see that your wickedness is great that you have done in the eyes of Yahweh by asking for a king for yourselves." ¹⁸ So Samuel called out to Yahweh, and Yahweh brought thunder and rain that same day, so all the people feared Yahweh and Samuel greatly. ¹⁹ Then all the people said to Samuel, "Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God so that we will not die, because we have added to all our sins by requesting a king for ourselves." ²⁰ And Samuel said to the people, "Do not fear! You have done all this evil; only do not turn aside from _⌊following_⌋* Yahweh. But you must serve Yahweh with all your heart. ²¹ And do not turn aside after the triviality,* which have no value and cannot deliver, for they are triviality. ²² For Yahweh will not forsake his people for the sake of his great name, because Yahweh has decided to make you his own people. ²³ Also, as for me, far be it from me _⌊that I should sin_⌋* against Yahweh by ceasing to pray for you! I will instruct you in the good and righteous way. ²⁴ Only fear Yahweh and serve him faithfully with all of your heart. For consider _⌊what great things he has done for you_⌋.* ²⁵ But if you continue to do wickedness, both you and your king will be swept away."

⁵ They said to him, "Look, you are old and your sons do not follow in your ways. So then appoint a king for us to judge* us, like all the nations. ⁶ But the matter _⌊was displeasing to Samuel_⌋* when they said, "Give us a king to judge* us," so Samuel prayed to Yahweh. ⁷ Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people concerning all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. ⁸ Like all the deeds they have done from the day I brought them up from Egypt until this day, they have forsaken me and have served other gods—so they are doing to you also.

¹⁹ However, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel and they said, "No, but there must be a king over us, ²⁰ so that we _⌊also_⌋* may be like all the nations, and our king may rule us and go out before us and fight our battles." ²¹ Now when Samuel heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of Yahweh. ²² Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "Listen to their voice, and appoint a king for them." So Samuel spoke to the men of Israel, "Each of you go to his own town."

¹ Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it over his head and kissed him and said, "_⌊Has not_⌋* Yahweh anointed you as leader over his inheritance?

²⁴ Then Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen? For there is no one like him among all the people!" And all the people shouted and said, "Long live the king!"

¹⁴ Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal, and let us renew the kingship there." ¹⁵ So all the people went to Gilgal and they made Saul king there before Yahweh in Gilgal. They sacrificed fellowship offerings there before Yahweh. Then Saul rejoiced there greatly along with all the men of Israel.

¹⁷ who will go out before them and will come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so the community of Yahweh will not be like a flock that does not have a shepherd."

²² Now Eli was very old, and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel and that they were having sexual relations with the women who were serving at the entrance of the tent of assembly.*

²⁹ Why do you despise my sacrifice and my offering which I commanded for my dwelling place, while you honored your sons more than me by making yourselves fat from the best of all the offerings of my people Israel?

¹³ I will make him know that I am about to judge his household forever because of the iniquity that he knew, for his sons were bringing curses on themselves,* but he did not rebuke them.

¹⁶ Then Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son!" And he said, "Here I am."

¹⁹ And Samuel grew up, and Yahweh was with him. _⌊He did not allow any of his prophecies to go unfulfilled_⌋.* ²⁰ All Israel from Dan to Beersheba realized that Samuel was faithful* as a prophet to Yahweh.

¹ When Samuel grew old he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.

³ But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after gain, they took bribes, and they perverted justice.

⁵ They said to him, "Look, you are old and your sons do not follow in your ways. So then appoint a king for us to judge* us, like all the nations.

²⁰ so that we _⌊also_⌋* may be like all the nations, and our king may rule us and go out before us and fight our battles."

¹⁸ And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not abandon me until I proclaim your _⌊strength_⌋* to this generation, your power to every one that comes after.

³ "Listen to me, house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel who have been carried from the belly, who have been carried from the womb: ⁴ Even* to your old age I am he; even* to your advanced age I myself will support you. I myself have made you, and I myself will carry you, and I myself will support you, and I will save you.

⁶ For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is imminent.

¹⁴ because I* know that the removal of my habitation is imminent, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.

¹⁷ "You shall not covet the house of your neighbor; you will not covet the wife of your neighbor or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that is your neighbor's."

⁴ If indeed the stolen item is found _⌊in his possession_⌋* alive, from ox to donkey to small livestock, he will make double restitution.

⁸ And you will not take a bribe, because the bribe makes the sighted blind and ruins the words of the righteous.

⁴ _⌊and when_⌋* he sins and is guilty, then* he shall bring back _⌊the things he had stolen_⌋* or _⌊what he had extorted_⌋* or _⌊something with which he had been entrusted_⌋* or the lost property that he had found,

¹⁵ Then Moses became angry, and he said to Yahweh, "Do not notice their grain offering. I have not offered one donkey from them, and I have not mistreated one of them."

¹⁹ You shall not subvert* justice; you shall not _⌊show partiality_⌋;* and you shall not take a bribe, for the bribe makes blind the eyes of the wise and misrepresents the words of the righteous.

⁵ So he said to them, "Yahweh is witness against you, and his anointed one is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand." Then they said, "He is witness."

⁶ He said to his men, "Far be it from me in* Yahweh, that I do this thing to my lord, to Yahweh's anointed one, by stretching out my hand against him! For he is the anointed one of Yahweh."

¹⁴ David said to him, "How is it that you were not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed one?" ¹⁵ Then David called to one of the young men and said to him, "Come near; strike him." So he struck him down and he died. ¹⁶ David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you by saying, 'I killed Yahweh's anointed one!'"

²¹ They said to him, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Therefore give to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God!"

⁸ And Zacchaeus stopped and* said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I am giving to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I am paying it* back four times as much!"

³³ I have desired no one's silver or gold or clothing!

¹ Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except by God, and those that exist are put in place by God. ² So then, the one who resists authority resists the ordinance which is from God, and those who resist will receive condemnation on themselves. ³ For rulers are not a cause of terror for a good deed, but for bad conduct. So do you want not to be afraid of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from it, ⁴ for it is God's servant to you for what is good. But if you do what is bad, be afraid, because it does not bear the sword to no purpose. For it is God's servant, the one who avenges for punishment on the one who does what is bad. ⁵ Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath but also because of conscience. ⁶ For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities* are servants of God, busily engaged in this very thing. ⁷ Pay to everyone what is owed: pay taxes to whom taxes are due; pay customs duties to whom customs duties are due; pay respect to whom respect is due; pay honor to whom honor is due.*

¹⁴ Behold, this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you. For I am not seeking your possessions, but you. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.

⁵ _⌊For never_⌋* did we come with a word of flattery, just as you know, nor with a pretext of greediness (God is witness),

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and righteously and blamelessly we became to you who believe,

² shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not by compulsion but willingly, in accordance with God, and not greedily but eagerly,

⁵ _⌊Commit to_⌋* Yahweh your way; Trust also on him and he will act. ⁶ Then he will bring forth your righteousness like the light, and your justice like the noonday.

⁴ Then the other administrators and satraps _⌊began to seek_⌋* to find a pretext against Daniel _⌊in connection with the kingdom_⌋,* but they were not able to find any pretext and _⌊corruption_⌋* _⌊because_⌋* he was trustworthy, and no* negligence or _⌊corruption_⌋* _⌊could be found in him_⌋.*

¹² Demetrius has been testified to by all, even by the truth itself. And we also testify to him, and you know that our testimony is true.

⁹ But David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy* him! For who has stretched out his hand against Yahweh's anointed one and remained blameless?"

³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written, ³⁶ I would _⌊surely_⌋* carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it on me like a crown. ³⁷ I would give him an account of my steps; I would approach him like a noble. ³⁸ If my land has cried out against me, and its furrows have wept together, ³⁹ if I have eaten its yield without payment, or* I have caused the breath of its owners to die, ⁴⁰ let thorns grow in place of wheat and noxious weeds in place of barley." The words of Job are ended.

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "_⌊My wrath has been kindled_⌋* against you* and against the two of your friends, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has.

³ You have tried my heart; you have examined me by night; you have tested me; you found nothing. I have decided that my mouth will not transgress.

³⁸ Pilate said to him, "What is truth?"
And when he* had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, "I find no basis for an accusation against him.

⁹ And there was loud shouting, and some of the scribes from the party of the Pharisees stood up and* contended sharply, saying, "We find nothing wrong with this man! But what if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?"

¹⁶ _⌊For this reason_⌋* also I myself _⌊always_⌋* do my best to have a clear conscience toward God and people.

²⁰ or these men themselves should say what crime they found when* I stood before the Sanhedrin,*

⁴ For I am conscious of nothing against myself, but not by this am I vindicated. But the one who judges me is the Lord.

¹² For our reason for boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, in holiness* and purity of motive from God, not* in merely human wisdom, but by the grace of God.

²⁶ It was that Aaron and Moses to whom Yahweh said, "Bring the _⌊Israelites_⌋* out from the land of Egypt according to their divisions."

⁹ "You saw the misery of our ancestors* in Egypt, and you heard their shout at the Red Sea. ¹⁰ You gave signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all of his servants, and all of the people of his land because you knew that they acted arrogantly against them. You made a name for yourself, as it is this day. ¹¹ And you divided the sea before them, and they passed through the sea on dry ground, but their pursuers you threw into the depths like a stone into mighty waters. ¹² You led them by day with a column of cloud and with a column of fire by night, to give them light on the way that they were to go. ¹³ Then you came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right judgments and true teachings, good regulations and commandments. ¹⁴ You made known your holy Sabbath to them and gave them commandments, regulations, and law* by the hand of your servant Moses.

¹⁹ Your way was through the sea, and your path* through many waters. Yet your footprints were not discerned.* ²⁰ You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

¹² In front of their ancestors* he did a wonder, in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. ¹³ He split the sea and caused them to go over, and he caused waters to stand like a heap. ¹⁴ And he led them with the cloud by day, and all night with a fiery light. ¹⁵ He caused rocks to split in the wilderness and provided drink abundantly as from the depths. ¹⁶ And he brought streams out of the rock and caused water to flow down like rivers. ¹⁷ But they sinned still further against him by rebelling against the Most High in the desert. ¹⁸ And they tested God in their heart by asking food _⌊for their craving_⌋.* ¹⁹ And they spoke against God. They said, "Is God able to prepare a table in the wilderness? ²⁰ Yes, he struck the rock and water flowed and streams gushed out, but can he also give food or provide meat for his people?" ²¹ Therefore Yahweh heard and he was very angry, and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and his anger also rose up against Israel, ²² because they did not believe God, and they did not trust his salvation. ²³ Nevertheless, he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven, ²⁴ and rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. ²⁵ Humankind ate the bread of _⌊angels_⌋.* He sent them food enough to be satisfied. ²⁶ He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens and drove along the south wind by his strength. ²⁷ Then he rained meat on them like dust, even winged birds* like the sand of the seas. ²⁸ He caused them to fall in the midst of his camp, all around his dwellings. ²⁹ So they ate and were well filled, and he brought about what they craved. ³⁰ They had not yet turned aside from their craving, while their food was still in their mouth, ³¹ the anger of God rose against them, and he killed some of the stoutest of them, even the young men of Israel he caused to bow down in death. ³² In spite of all this they sinned further and did not believe his wonders. ³³ And he consumed their days with futility * their years with terror.* ³⁴ When he killed some of them, then they sought him, and repented and earnestly sought God. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, and God Most High their redeemer. ³⁶ But they enticed him with their mouth and lied to him with their tongue. ³⁷ For their heart was not steadfast with him, nor were they faithful to his covenant. ³⁸ But he was compassionate; he pardoned* their guilt and did not destroy them. And many times he turned back his anger and did not stir up all his wrath, ³⁹ for he remembered that they were flesh, a passing wind that does not return. ⁴⁰ How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and vexed him in the wasteland! ⁴¹ So they again tested God and distressed* the Holy One of Israel. ⁴² And they did not remember his _⌊power_⌋* _⌊when_⌋* he redeemed them from the enemy, ⁴³ how he performed* his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the region of Zoan, ⁴⁴ when he turned their rivers* to blood so they could not drink from their streams. ⁴⁵ He sent among them flies that devoured them and frogs that destroyed them. ⁴⁶ And he gave their crop to the locusts and their labor to the locust.* ⁴⁷ He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore trees with sleet.* ⁴⁸ He also handed their cattle over to the hail and their livestock to the lightning bolts. ⁴⁹ He sent against them his fierce anger, rage and indignation and trouble, a band of _⌊destroying_⌋* angels. ⁵⁰ He cleared a path for his anger. He did not spare them* from death but handed their life over to the plague. ⁵¹ And he struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the first of their virility in the tents of Ham. ⁵² Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them like a herd in the wilderness. ⁵³ And he led them safely and they were not afraid, but the sea covered their enemies. ⁵⁴ So he brought them to his holy territory,* this mountain his right hand acquired.* ⁵⁵ And he drove out nations before them and allocated them for an inheritance by boundary line, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents. ⁵⁶ But they tested and rebelled against God Most High and did not keep his statutes. ⁵⁷ And they turned and were treacherous like their ancestors.* They twisted like a crooked* bow. ⁵⁸ For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and made him jealous with their images. ⁵⁹ God heard and he was very angry and rejected Israel utterly. ⁶⁰ So he abandoned the dwelling place at Shiloh, the tent he had placed among humankind. ⁶¹ And he gave his strength into captivity and his splendor into the hand of the enemy. ⁶² He also handed his people over to the sword, and he was very angry with his inheritance. ⁶³ Fire devoured his young men, and his young women* were not praised. ⁶⁴ His priests fell by the sword, and his widows did not weep. ⁶⁵ Then the Lord awoke like one who had been asleep, awoke like a warrior who had been drunk with wine.* ⁶⁶ And he beat back his enemies; he gave them over to perpetual scorn. ⁶⁷ And he rejected the tent of Joseph, and did not chose the tribe of Ephraim, ⁶⁸ but chose the tribe of Judah, _⌊Mount Zion_⌋* that he loved. ⁶⁹ And he built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever. ⁷⁰ And he chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds. ⁷¹ He brought him from following nursing ewes to shepherd Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance. ⁷² And he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and led them by the skillfulness of his hands.

⁶ Moses and Aaron were among his priests; Samuel also was among those who called on his name. They called to Yahweh, and he answered them.

²⁶ He sent his servant Moses, together with Aaron whom he had chosen.

⁴¹ He opened the rock and waters flowed; they coursed* through the dry places like a river.

⁷ I will mention the loyal love of Yahweh, the praises of Yahweh, according to all that Yahweh has done for us, and the greatness of goodness to the house of Israel that he has done to them according to his mercy and the abundance of his loyal love. ⁸ And he said, "Surely my people are children; they will not break faith." And he became a Savior to them. ⁹ In all their distress, _⌊there was no distress_⌋,* and the messenger of his _⌊presence_⌋* saved them, in his love and compassion he himself redeemed them, and he lifted them up, and he supported them all the days of old. ¹⁰ But* they _⌊were the ones who_⌋* rebelled, and they grieved _⌊his Holy Spirit_⌋,* so* he _⌊became an enemy to them_⌋;* he himself fought against them. ¹¹ Then* his people remembered the days of old, of Moses. Where is the one who led up them from the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is the one who puts _⌊his Holy Spirit_⌋* inside him, ¹² _⌊who made_⌋* his magnificent arm move _⌊at_⌋* the right hand of Moses, _⌊who divided_⌋* the waters _⌊before them_⌋,* to make an everlasting name for himself, ¹³ _⌊who led_⌋* them through the depths? They did not stumble like a horse in the desert; ¹⁴ like cattle in the valley that goes down, the Spirit of Yahweh _⌊gave him rest_⌋,* so you lead your people to make a magnificent name for yourself.

¹³ And by a prophet Yahweh brought Israel up from Egypt, and by a prophet he* was watched over.

⁴ For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and from the house of slavery I redeemed you. And I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam before you.

¹¹ At the sound of those dividing* the sheep among the watering places, there they will recount the righteous deeds of Yahweh, the righteous deeds for his warriors* in Israel. Then the people of Yahweh went down to the gates.

¹⁸ "Come now, and let us argue," says Yahweh. "Even though your sins are like scarlet, they will be white like snow; even though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

³ And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and men* of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. ⁴ What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? Why did I hope for it to yield grapes, and it yielded wild grapes?

²⁵ "Yet* you say, 'The way of the Lord is not fair!' Listen, now, house of Israel, is my way not fair? Is it not your ways that are not fair? ²⁶ When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and he does injustice, then* he will die because of them; because of his injustice that he did he will die! ²⁷ And when the wicked turns from his wickedness that he did and he does justice and righteousness, _⌊he will preserve his life_⌋.* ²⁸ And if he sees and he returns from all of his transgressions that he did, surely he will live; he will not die! ²⁹ And yet they, the house of Israel, say, 'The way of the Lord is not fair!' Are not my ways fair, house of Israel? _⌊Are not your ways unfair?_⌋* ³⁰ "Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, each one* according to his ways," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh. "Repent* and turn around from all of your transgression, and it will not be as a stumbling block of iniquity to you.

¹ Hear now what Yahweh says: "Arise! Plead your case with the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice." ² Hear, O mountains, the indictment of Yahweh, and you eternal foundations of the earth, for Yahweh has an indictment against his people, and against Israel he contends. ³ "O my people, what have I done to you, and how have I wearied you? Answer me! ⁴ For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and from the house of slavery I redeemed you. And I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam before you. ⁵ O my people, remember what Balak the king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, so that you might know the righteous acts of Yahweh."

³ explaining and demonstrating that it was necessary for the Christ* to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ."*

⁵ So Jacob arose from Beersheba. And the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, and their little ones and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to transport him. ⁶ And they took their livestock and their possessions that they had acquired in the land of Canaan. And they came to Egypt, Jacob and all his offspring with him, ⁷ his sons and his sons' sons with him, his daughters and his daughters' daughters with him, into Egypt.

²³ _⌊And then_⌋* during those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* groaned because of the work, and they cried out, and their cry for help because of the work went up to God. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob,

⁹ And now, look, the cry of distress of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* has come to me, and also I see the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them. ¹⁰ And now come, and I will send you to Pharaoh, and you must bring my people, the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* out from Egypt."

¹⁴ _⌊And Yahweh was angry with_⌋* Moses and said, "Is there not Aaron your brother the Levite? I know that he certainly can speak, and also there he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will rejoice in his heart. ¹⁵ And you will speak to him, and you will put words in his mouth, and I myself will be with your mouth and with his mouth, and I will teach you what you must do. ¹⁶ And he will speak for you to the people, _⌊and then_⌋* he will be to you as a mouth, and you will be to him as a god.

²⁷ And Yahweh said to Aaron, "Go to the desert to meet Moses." And he went and encountered him at the mountain of God and kissed him. ²⁸ And Moses told Aaron all the words of Yahweh, who had sent him—and all the signs that he had commanded him. ²⁹ And Moses and Aaron went, and they gathered all of the elders of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ³⁰ And Aaron spoke all the words that Yahweh had spoken to Moses, and he did the signs before the eyes of the people. ³¹ And the people believed when they heard that Yahweh had attended to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and that he had seen their misery, and they knelt down and they worshiped.

⁵¹ And it was on exactly this day Yahweh brought the _⌊Israelites_⌋* out from the land of Egypt by their divisions.

³⁰ And Yahweh saved Israel on that day from the hand* of Egypt, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore of the sea. ³¹ And Israel saw the great hand* that Yahweh displayed against Egypt, and the people feared Yahweh, and they believed in Yahweh and in Moses his servant.

¹⁵ our ancestors* went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt _⌊a long time_⌋,* and the Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors.*

² "My servant Moses is dead. Get up and cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ³ Every place that the soles of your feet will tread, I have given it to you, as I promised* to Moses. ⁴ From the wilderness _⌊and the Lebanon_⌋,* up to the great river, the river Euphrates, all of the land of the Hittites, and up to _⌊the great sea in the west_⌋,* will be your territory.

⁶ Be strong and courageous, for you will give the people this land as an inheritance that I swore to their ancestors* to give them.

¹⁰ Joshua said, "By this you will know that the living God is in your midst, and he will certainly drive out the Canaanites _⌊from before you_⌋,* and the Hittites, Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. ¹¹ Look! The ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth* is about to cross over ahead of you into the Jordan. ¹² So then, take twelve men from the tribes of Israel, _⌊one from each tribe_⌋.* ¹³ When the soles of the feet of the priests carrying the ark of Yahweh, Lord of all the earth,* rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off _⌊upstream_⌋,* and they will stand still in one heap.

¹⁸ and he said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel: 'I brought Israel up from Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.'

⁶ Then Samuel said to the people, "Yahweh is witness, who appointed Moses and Aaron, and who brought your ancestors* up from the land of Egypt.

O God, we have heard with our ears; our ancestors* have told us of work you worked in their days, in days of old. ² You with your hand drove out the nations, but them* you planted. You harmed the peoples, but them* you let spread out. ³ For not with their sword did they possess the land, and their arm did not give them victory. Rather it was your right hand and your arm and the light of your presence, because you delighted in them.

⁵⁴ So he brought them to his holy territory,* this mountain his right hand acquired.* ⁵⁵ And he drove out nations before them and allocated them for an inheritance by boundary line, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

⁴⁴ And he gave to them the lands of the nations, and they inherited the labor of the peoples,

¹⁵ And Jacob went down to Egypt and died, he and our fathers.

¹⁸ The rock who* bore you, you neglected, and you forgot God, the one giving you birth.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two could cause a myriad to flee, if their Rock had not sold them, and Yahweh had not given them up?

¹⁴ So _⌊the anger of Yahweh was kindled_⌋* against Israel, and he gave them into the hand of plunderers; and they plundered them, and he sold them into the hand of their enemies from all sides. They were unable to withstand their enemies any longer.

⁷ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. They forgot Yahweh their God, and they served the Baals and the Asheroth.* ⁸ And _⌊the anger of Yahweh was kindled_⌋* against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Aram Naharaim; and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.

¹² And again the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. So Yahweh strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they did evil in the eyes of Yahweh.

³¹ And Shamgar son of Anath came after him, and he killed six hundred Philistines with the goad of an ox; he also delivered Israel.

² So Yahweh sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, and he was living in Harosheth Haggoyim.

⁷ And _⌊the anger of Yahweh burned_⌋* against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.*

¹ And again, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and Yahweh gave them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

²¹ They forgot God their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt,

¹ Thus says Yahweh:
"Where is this divorce document of your mother's divorce, with which I dismissed her? or to whom of my creditors did I sell you? Look! you were sold because of your sin, and your mother was dismissed because of your transgressions. ² Why was there no man when I came, no one who answered when I called? _⌊Do I lack the strength to save_⌋?* Or is there no power in me to deliver? Look! by my rebuke I dry up the sea; I _⌊make_⌋* the rivers a desert; their fish stink because there is no water, and they* die because of thirst.

¹⁰ But* they _⌊were the ones who_⌋* rebelled, and they grieved _⌊his Holy Spirit_⌋,* so* he _⌊became an enemy to them_⌋;* he himself fought against them.

³² Can a young woman forget her ornaments?* Or a bride her sashes? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

¹³ They abandoned Yahweh, and they served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

⁷ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. They forgot Yahweh their God, and they served the Baals and the Asheroth.*

⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up a deliverer for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* who delivered them, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

¹⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite and _⌊a left-handed man_⌋.* And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* sent a tribute to Eglon king of Moab _⌊through him_⌋.*

³ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried to Yahweh, as he had nine hundred iron chariots,* and he oppressed the _⌊Israelites_⌋* _⌊cruelly_⌋* for twenty years.*

⁷ When the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh on account of the Midianites,*

¹⁰ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, saying, "We have sinned against you; we have abandoned our God and served the Baals."

¹⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to Yahweh, "We have sinned; _⌊do to us accordingly as you see fit_⌋;* only please deliver us this day." ¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Yahweh; and _⌊he could no longer bear_⌋* the misery of Israel.

² _⌊From_⌋* the day the ark stayed in Kiriath Jearim, _⌊days multiplied and became twenty years_⌋* while all the house of Israel mourned after Yahweh.

³⁴ When he killed some of them, then they sought him, and repented and earnestly sought God. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, and God Most High their redeemer.

⁴⁴ Yet he looked upon their distress when he heard their cry.

¹⁶ Yahweh, in distress they have visited you; they poured out an _⌊incantation_⌋;* your discipline was on them.

²² For Yahweh is our judge; Yahweh is our lawgiver. Yahweh is our king; he is the one who will save us.

⁷⁴ that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, could serve him without fear ⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

¹⁴ For the love of Christ controls us, because we* have concluded this: that one died for all; as a result all died. ¹⁵ And he died for all, in order that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for the one who died for them and was raised.

⁶ She sent and called for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh Naphtali and said to him, "Has not Yahweh the God of Israel commanded you? 'Go, _⌊march to_⌋* Mount Tabor, and take ten thousand men from the descendants* of Naphtali and Zebulun.

¹⁴ And Yahweh turned to him and said, "Go in this your strength, and you will deliver Israel from the palm of Midian. Did I not send you?"

³² Thus, on that day he* was called Jerub-Baal, _⌊which means_⌋,* "Let Baal contend against him," because he had pulled down his altar.

²⁹ Jerub-Baal son of Joash lived in his own house.

³⁵ nor did they show favor* to the house of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) in accordance with all the good that he did for Israel.

¹ Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior; he was the son of a prostitute, and _⌊Gilead was his father_⌋.* ² Gilead's wife also bore for him sons; and the sons of his wife grew up and drove Jephthah away, and they said to him, "You will not inherit the house of our father because you are the son of another woman." ³ So Jephthah fled from the presence of his brothers, and he lived in the land of Tob. And _⌊outlaws_⌋* gathered around Jephthah and went with him. ⁴ After a time the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* made war with Israel. ⁵ When the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* made war with Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob. ⁶ And they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our commander, so that we may make war against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋."* ⁷ Jephthah said to the elders, "Did you not shun me and drive me out from the house of my father? Why do you come to me now when you have trouble?" ⁸ And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "That being so, we have now returned to you, that you may go with us _⌊to fight_⌋* against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and become for us as head of all the inhabitants of Gilead." ⁹ So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you bring me back _⌊to fight_⌋* against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and Yahweh gives them _⌊over to me_⌋,* will I be your head?" ¹⁰ And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "Yahweh will be a _⌊witness_⌋* between us; we will act according to your word." ¹¹ So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh at Mizpah. ¹² And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* saying, "What is between you and me that you have come to me to make war against my land?" ¹³ And the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* said to Jephthah's messengers, "Because Israel took my land from the Arnon up to the Jabbok and the Jordan when they came up from Egypt; so then, restore it peacefully." ¹⁴ Once again Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* ¹⁵ and he said to him, "Thus says Jephthah, 'Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* ¹⁶ because when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* and went to Kadesh. ¹⁷ Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let us cross through your land," but the king of Edom would not listen. And they also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he was not willing. So Israel stayed in Kadesh. ¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to _⌊the east_⌋* side of the land of Moab, and they* encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab. ¹⁹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites,* king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Please let us cross through your land _⌊to our country_⌋.'* ²⁰ But Sihon did not trust Israel to cross through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people and then encamped at Jahaz; and he made war with Israel. ²¹ And Yahweh, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them; and Israel occupied all the land of the Amorites* inhabiting that land. ²² They occupied all the territory of the Amorites* from the Arnon up to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness up to the Jordan. ²³ So then Yahweh, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites* from before his people Israel, and you want to possess it? ²⁴ Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? Whoever Yahweh our God has driven out before us, we will possess it. ²⁵ So then, are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel, or did he ever make war against them? ²⁶ When Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns that are _⌊along the Arnon_⌋,* for three hundred years,* why did you not recover them at that time? ²⁷ I have not sinned against you; but you are the one who is doing wrong by making war against me. _⌊Let Yahweh judge_⌋* today between the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋."* ²⁸ But the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* did not listen to the message that Jephthah sent to him. ²⁹ And the Spirit of Yahweh came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh. He passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed through to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ³⁰ And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, and he said, "If indeed you will give the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* into my hand, ³¹ whatever* comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return safely from the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* will be Yahweh's, and I will offer it as a burnt offering." ³² And Jephthah crossed over to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* to make war against them; and Yahweh gave them into his hand. ³³ And he defeated them with a very great blow, from Aroer as far as Minnith, twenty towns,* up to Abel Keramim. And the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* were subdued before the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

¹ And again, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and Yahweh gave them into the hand of the Philistines forty years. ² There was a certain man from Zorah, from the tribe of the Danites, and his name was Manoah; his wife was infertile and did not bear children. ³ And an angel of Yahweh appeared to the woman, and he said to her, "Behold, you are infertile and have not borne children, but you will conceive and bear a son. ⁴ So then, be careful and do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, ⁵ because you will conceive and bear a son. No razor _⌊will touch_⌋* his head, because the boy will be a _⌊Nazirite of God_⌋* _⌊from birth_⌋.* And it is he who will begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines." ⁶ And the woman came and told her husband, saying, "A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of an angel of God, very awesome. I did not ask him from where he came, and he did not tell me his name. ⁷ And he said to me, 'Look, you will conceive and bear a son, so then, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, for the boy will be a Nazirite of God from birth* until the day of his death.'" ⁸ Then Manoah prayed to Yahweh and said, "Excuse me, my Lord, please let the man of God whom you sent again come to us and teach us what we should do concerning the boy who will be born." ⁹ And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and an angel of God came again to the woman; she was sitting in the field, but Manoah her husband was not with her. ¹⁰ The woman quickly ran and told her husband, and she said to him, "Look! The man who came to me the other day appeared to me." ¹¹ So Manoah got up and went after his wife, and he came to the man and said to him, "Are you the man that spoke to the woman?" And he said, "I am." ¹² And Manoah said to him, "Now _⌊when your words come true_⌋,* what will be the boy's _⌊manner of life_⌋* and work?" ¹³ And the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, "Let the woman be attentive to all that I said. ¹⁴ She should not eat of anything that comes from the vine, or drink wine or strong drink, or eat anything unclean; she should keep all that I commanded." ¹⁵ And Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, "_⌊Please stay_⌋,* and let us prepare a _⌊young goat_⌋* for you." ¹⁶ The angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, "If you keep me, I will not eat your food, but if you prepare a burnt offering for Yahweh, you can offer it (for Manoah did not know that he was an angel of Yahweh)."

¹³ So the Philistines were subdued and they did not come into the territory of Israel again, and the hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you.

⁵ And now if you will carefully listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you will be a treasured possession for me out of all the peoples, _⌊for all the earth is mine_⌋,* ⁶ but you, you will belong to me as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you will speak to the _⌊Israelites_⌋."*

²¹ He has no regard for evil in Jacob, and he does not see trouble in Israel; Yahweh his God is with him, and a shout* of a king is among them.*

²³ But Gideon said to them, "I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; Yahweh will rule over you."

¹⁸ but today you have risen against the house of my father and killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and you have made Abimelech, the son of his slave woman, a king over the lords of Shechem, because he is your relative*—

⁵⁶ So God repaid* the wickedness* that Abimelech committed against his father by killing his seventy brothers. ⁵⁷ And God also repaid all the wickedness* of the men of Shechem on their heads, and the curse of Jotham son of Jerub-Baal fell on them.

⁵ They said to him, "Look, you are old and your sons do not follow in your ways. So then appoint a king for us to judge* us, like all the nations. ⁶ But the matter _⌊was displeasing to Samuel_⌋* when they said, "Give us a king to judge* us," so Samuel prayed to Yahweh. ⁷ Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people concerning all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

¹⁹ However, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel and they said, "No, but there must be a king over us, ²⁰ so that we _⌊also_⌋* may be like all the nations, and our king may rule us and go out before us and fight our battles."

¹⁹ But you today have rejected your God who always delivers you from all of your calamities and your distresses. You have said to him, 'No, but you must appoint a king over us!' So then present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes and by your clans."

¹ Now Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "_⌊Make a treaty with us_⌋* and we will serve you." ² But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition _⌊I will make a treaty_⌋* with you, by gouging out the right eye of each of you, so that I can make it a disgrace for all Israel."

¹² But God has been my king from long ago, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

¹⁰ Where now is your king that he may save you? Where in all your cities are your judges, of whom you said, "Give to me a king and rulers?"

²⁰ And as for your female donkeys that were lost _⌊three days ago_⌋,* _⌊do not be concerned about them_⌋,* because they have been found. For whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not for you and for all the house of your father?"

¹⁵ So all the people went to Gilgal and they made Saul king there before Yahweh in Gilgal. They sacrificed fellowship offerings there before Yahweh. Then Saul rejoiced there greatly along with all the men of Israel.

²⁹ So they ate and were well filled, and he brought about what they craved. ³⁰ They had not yet turned aside from their craving, while their food was still in their mouth, ³¹ the anger of God rose against them, and he killed some of the stoutest of them, even the young men of Israel he caused to bow down in death.

¹¹ I gave you a king in my anger, and I took him in my wrath.

²¹ And then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

¹ Then* Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ² "And to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* you shall say, 'If there is _⌊anyone_⌋* from the _⌊Israelites_⌋* or* from the alien who is dwelling in Israel, who gives _⌊any of_⌋* his offspring to Molech, he must surely be put to death; the people of the land must stone him with stones.* ³ And I myself will set my face against that man, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people, because he has given _⌊some of_⌋* his offspring to Molech, so that _⌊he makes my sanctuary unclean_⌋* and profanes* _⌊my holy name_⌋.* ⁴ And if the people of the land ever shut their eyes from* that man at his giving _⌊some of_⌋* his offspring to Molech, not putting him to death, ⁵ then* I myself will set my face against that man and against his clan, and I will cut him off and all those from the midst of their people who prostitute after Molech. ⁶ As for* the person who turns to the mediums and the soothsayers to prostitute after them, I will set* my face against that person, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people. ⁷ " 'And you shall consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy, because I am Yahweh your God. ⁸ And you shall keep my statutes, and you shall do them; I am Yahweh who consecrates you. ⁹ " 'If there is _⌊anyone_⌋* who curses his father or his mother, he shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father and his mother—his blood is upon him. ¹⁰ " 'As for* a man who commits adultery with a man's wife, who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, both the man who commits adultery and the woman who commits adultery shall surely be put to death. ¹¹ As for* a man who lies with his father's wife, he has exposed his father's nakedness; both of them shall be put to death—their blood is on them. ¹² As for* a man who lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall be put to death; they have committed a perversion—their blood is on them. ¹³ " 'As for* the man who lies with a male as lying with a woman, they have committed a detestable thing; they shall surely be put to death—their blood is on them.

¹ "And it will happen that if you indeed listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, _⌊to diligently observe_⌋* all his commandments that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* then Yahweh your God will set you above all the nations of the earth. ² And all of these blessings shall come upon you, and _⌊they shall have an effect on you_⌋* if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God: ³ "You will be blessed in the city, and you will be blessed in the field. ⁴ "Blessed will be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your livestock, _⌊the calf of your cattle and the lambs of your flock_⌋.* ⁵ "Blessed will be your basket and your kneading trough. ⁶ "Blessed will you be _⌊when you come in and blessed will you be when you go out_⌋.* ⁷ "Yahweh will cause your enemies _⌊who rise up against you to be defeated before you_⌋;* on one road* they shall come out against you, but on seven roads* they shall flee _⌊before you_⌋.* ⁸ Yahweh will command _⌊concerning you_⌋* the blessing to be in your barns and _⌊in all your endeavors_⌋;* and he will bless you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you. ⁹ Yahweh will establish you for _⌊himself_⌋* as a holy people as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of Yahweh your God and you walk in his ways. ¹⁰ And all of the peoples of the earth shall see that _⌊by the name of Yahweh you are called_⌋,* and _⌊they shall fear you_⌋.* ¹¹ And _⌊Yahweh will make you successful and prosperous_⌋,* in the fruit of your womb and on the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors* to give to you. ¹² Yahweh shall open for you his _⌊rich_⌋* storehouse, even the heavens, to give the rain for* your land in its time and to bless all of the work of your hand, and you will lend to many nations; you will not borrow from them. ¹³ And Yahweh shall make you* as head and not the tail, and you shall be only at the top of the nations, and you shall not be at the bottom, if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋* _⌊and diligently observe them_⌋.* ¹⁴ And you shall not turn aside from _⌊any of_⌋* the words that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋* to the right or left by going after other gods to serve them.

¹⁴ "So now, revere Yahweh and serve him in sincerity and faithfulness; remove the gods that your ancestors* served beyond the river* and in Egypt, and serve Yahweh.

²⁰ If you forsake Yahweh and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster to you; he will destroy you after he has done good to you."

¹² So I let them* go in the stubbornness of their heart; they walked in their counsels. ¹³ Oh that my people would listen to me; that Israel would walk in my ways. ¹⁴ I would subdue their enemies quickly, and turn my hand against their adversaries. ¹⁵ Those who hate Yahweh would cringe before him, and their fate* would be forever.

¹⁰ Tell the innocent* that it is good for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.

⁷ to those who, by perseverance in good work, seek glory and honor and immortality, eternal life,

¹⁴ " 'But* if you do not listen to me and you do not carry out* all these commands, ¹⁵ and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self* abhors my regulations, to not carry out* all my commands by your breaking my covenant, ¹⁶ I _⌊in turn_⌋* will do this to you: then* I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed _⌊in vain_⌋,* and your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷ And I will set my face against you, and you shall be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; and your haters shall rule over you, and you shall flee away, but* there shall not be _⌊anybody who is pursuing_⌋* you. ¹⁸ " 'And if in spite of these things you do not listen to me, then* I will continue to discipline you seven times for your sins. ¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your strength; and I will make your heaven like iron* and your land like copper. ²⁰ And your strength shall be consumed _⌊in vain_⌋;* and your land shall not give its produce, and the land's trees shall not give their fruit. ²¹ " 'And if you go against me in hostility and you are not willing to listen to me, then* I will add a plague onto you seven times according to your sins. ²² And I will send _⌊wild animals_⌋* out among you, and they shall make you childless, and they shall cut down your domestic animals, and they shall make you fewer; and your roads shall be desolate. ²³ " 'And if you do not accept correction from* me through these things, but* you go against me in hostility, ²⁴ then* I myself* will also go against you in hostility, and I myself* also will strike you seven times for your sins. ²⁵ And I will bring upon you a sword that seeks vengeance for the covenant, and you shall be gathered to your cities; and I will send a plague in your midst, and you shall be given into the hand of an enemy. ²⁶ At my breaking the _⌊supply_⌋* of bread* for you, then* ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall return your bread by weight; and you shall eat it, and you shall not be satisfied. ²⁷ " 'And if through this you do not listen to me and you go against me in hostility, ²⁸ then* I will go against you in hostile anger, and also* I myself* will discipline you seven times for your sins. ²⁹ And you shall eat the flesh of your sons; and the flesh of your daughters you shall eat. ³⁰ And I will destroy your high places, and I will cut down your incense altars, and I will place your corpses on your idols' corpses; and my inner self* shall abhor you.

¹⁵ "_⌊And then_⌋* if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God _⌊by diligently observing_⌋* all of his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* then all of these curses shall come upon you, and they shall overtake you: ¹⁶ "You shall* be cursed in the city, and you shall be cursed in the field. ¹⁷ "Your basket shall be cursed and your kneading trough. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ "You shall be cursed _⌊when you come in_⌋,* and you shall be cursed _⌊when you go out_⌋.* ²⁰ "Yahweh will send upon you* the curse,* the panic,* and the threat* _⌊in everything that you undertake_⌋,* _⌊until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly_⌋* _⌊because of_⌋* the evil of your deeds in that* you have forsaken me. ²¹ Yahweh will cause the plague to cling to you _⌊until it consumes you_⌋* from the land that you are going to,* to take possession of it. ²² Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword* and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you _⌊until you perish_⌋.* ²³ And your heavens that are over your heads shall be like bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be like iron. ²⁴ Yahweh will change the rain of your land to fine dust and to sand; from the heaven it shall come down upon you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋.* ²⁵ "Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; on one road you shall go _⌊against_⌋* them,* but you will flee on seven roads _⌊before_⌋* them,* and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ And your dead bodies shall be as food for all of the birds of the heaven and to the animals of the earth, and there shall not be _⌊anyone to frighten them away_⌋.* ²⁷ "Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with _⌊the skin rash that cannot be healed_⌋.* ²⁸ Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart. ²⁹ And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed _⌊all the time_⌋,* and there will not be _⌊anyone who will rescue you_⌋. * ³⁰ You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep* with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it. ³¹ Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right _⌊before you_⌋,* and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and _⌊there shall not be anyone who rescues you_⌋.* ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and _⌊you will be looking on_⌋* _⌊longingly_⌋* for* them all day, _⌊but you will be powerless to do anything_⌋.* ³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.* ³⁴ You shall become mad _⌊because of what your eyes shall see_⌋.* ³⁵ Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which _⌊you will not be able to be healed_⌋,* from the sole of your foot and up to your crown. ³⁶ Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors* have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone. ³⁷ And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there. ³⁸ "You shall carry out much seed to the field, but you shall gather little produce, for the locust shall devour it. ³⁹ You shall plant vineyards and you shall dress* them, but you shall not drink wine and you shall not gather grapes, for the worm shall eat it.* ⁴⁰ There shall be olive trees for you in all of your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself, for your olives* shall drop off. ⁴¹ You shall bear sons and daughters, but they shall not be _⌊yours_⌋,* for they shall go into captivity. ⁴² The cricket shall take possession of all your trees and the fruit of your ground. ⁴³ The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower. ⁴⁴ He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, but you shall be the tail. ⁴⁵ "And all of these curses shall come over you, and they shall pursue you, and they shall overtake you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* because _⌊you did not listen_⌋* to the voice of Yahweh your God, _⌊by observing_⌋* his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. ⁴⁶ And they shall be among you as a sign and as a wonder and among your offspring _⌊forever_⌋.* ⁴⁷ "_⌊Because_⌋* of the fact that you did not serve Yahweh your God with joy and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, ⁴⁸ then you shall serve your enemies, whom Yahweh will send against you under conditions of famine, in thirst, in nakedness, and in a lack of everything; and he shall place* a yoke of iron on your neck _⌊until he has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁴⁹ Yahweh will raise up against you a nation from far off, from the end of the earth, attacking as the eagle swoops down, _⌊a nation whose language you will not understand_⌋,* ⁵⁰ _⌊a grim-faced nation_⌋* _⌊who does not show respect_⌋* to the old and the young and does not show pity. ⁵¹ And it* shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, _⌊calves of your herds_⌋,* and _⌊lambs of_⌋* your flock _⌊until it has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁵² And it shall besiege you in all your towns _⌊until your high and fortified walls fall_⌋,* which you are trusting in* _⌊throughout your land_⌋;* and it shall besiege you in all of your towns in all of your land that Yahweh your God has given to you. ⁵³ And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁴ The most refined and the very sensitive* man among you _⌊shall be mean with his brother_⌋* and _⌊against his beloved wife_⌋* and against the rest* of his children that he has left over, ⁵⁵ _⌊by refraining from giving_⌋* to even one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because there is not anything that is left over for him _⌊during the siege and distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁶ The most refined and the most delicate woman among you, who shall* not venture to put the sole of her foot on the ground from being so delicate and from such gentleness, _⌊shall be mean to her beloved husband_⌋* and against her son and against her daughter, ⁵⁷ and even concerning her afterbirth _⌊that goes out_⌋* from between her feet and also concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon her in your _⌊towns_⌋.* ⁵⁸ "If _⌊you do not diligently observe_⌋* all the words of this law written in this scroll by revering this glorious and awesome name, Yahweh your God, ⁵⁹ then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring. ⁶⁰ And he shall bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt concerning which _⌊you were in dread_⌋* _⌊because of them_⌋.* ⁶¹ Also any illness and any plague* that is not written in the scroll of this law, he shall bring them, Yahweh, upon you until you are destroyed. ⁶² And you shall remain _⌊only a few people_⌋* in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God. ⁶³ _⌊And then_⌋* as Yahweh delighted over you _⌊to make you prosperous_⌋* to make you numerous, so Yahweh shall delight over you to exterminate you* and to destroy you, and so you shall be plucked from the land that you are going there to take possession of it. ⁶⁴ And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor* your ancestors,* gods of wood and stone. ⁶⁵ And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes* and a languishing of your inner self.* ⁶⁶ And _⌊your life shall hang in doubt before you_⌋,* and you shall be startled* night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. ⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, '_⌊If only it was evening_⌋!'* and in the evening you shall say '_⌊If only it was morning_⌋!'* because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see. ⁶⁸ And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I _⌊promised_⌋* to you that '_⌊You shall not see it again_⌋!'* And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer."

⁹ After they moved it, the hand of Yahweh was against the city, causing a very great confusion, and he struck the men of the city _⌊from the youngest to the oldest_⌋,* causing tumors* to break out on them.

⁹ But they forgot Yahweh their God, so he sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the hosts of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.

²⁰ But if you refuse and you rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword.
For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken."

¹¹ Woe to the wicked!* It is bad! For what is done by his hands will be done to him.

⁸ but to those who act from selfish ambition and who disobey the truth, but who obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. ⁹ There will be affliction and distress for every _⌊human being_⌋* who does evil, of the Jew first and of the Greek,

¹³ And Moses said to the people, "You must not be afraid. Stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will accomplish for you today, because the Egyptians whom you see today you will see never again.

³¹ And Israel saw the great hand* that Yahweh displayed against Egypt, and the people feared Yahweh, and they believed in Yahweh and in Moses his servant.

⁷ So then take your stand, so that I may judge you before Yahweh with regard to all the deeds of justice* of Yahweh that he performed with both you and your ancestors.*

¹⁶ Then Samuel said to Saul, "Stop and let me tell you what Yahweh said to me last night." So he said to him, "Speak."

¹² Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh, on the day Yahweh gave the Amorites* over to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and he said in the sight of Israel,
"Sun in Gibeon, stand still, and moon, in the valley of Aijalon."

⁹ So Samuel took a single _⌊nursing lamb_⌋* and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to Yahweh. Then Samuel cried out to Yahweh on behalf of Israel, and Yahweh answered him. ¹⁰ _⌊While_⌋* Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near for the battle against Israel. But Yahweh thundered against the Philistines with a great noise on that day and threw them into confusion so that they were defeated before Israel.

⁷ Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people concerning all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

¹ Like snow in the summer and like rain at the harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool.

¹ Then Yahweh said to me, "Even if Moses and Samuel stood _⌊before me_⌋,* my heart would not be to this people. Send them away from my _⌊sight_⌋,* and let them go out.

¹⁶ Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much. ¹⁷ Elijah was a human being* with the same nature as us, and _⌊he prayed fervently_⌋* for it not to rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. ¹⁸ And he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit.

²³ And Moses stretched out his staff to the heavens, and Yahweh gave thunder* and hail, and fire went to the earth, and Yahweh caused hail to rain on the land of Egypt. ²⁴ And there was hail, and fire was flashing back and forth in the midst of the very severe hail, the like of which was not in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation. ²⁵ And the hail struck in all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, from human to animal, and the hail struck all the vegetation of the field and smashed every tree of the field.

⁹ Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled in Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month on the twentieth day of the month. All the people sat in the public square of the house of God trembling because of this matter and from the rains.

¹² Then they believed his words; they sang his praise. ¹³ They quickly forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel.

⁵ And if anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouth and consumes their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, in this way he must be killed. ⁶ These have the authority to shut the sky, so that _⌊it does not rain_⌋* during the days of their prophecy. And they have authority over the waters, to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with every plague as often as they wish.

⁷ So now, return the wife of the man, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you and you will live. And _⌊if you do not return her_⌋,* know that you will certainly die, and all that are yours."

²⁸ Pray to Yahweh. The thunder of God and hail _⌊are enough_⌋,* and I will release you, and _⌊you will no longer have to stay_⌋."*

¹⁷ And now forgive my sin surely this time, and pray to Yahweh your God so that he may only remove from me this death."

⁵ Then Samuel said, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to Yahweh for you."

⁸ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to Samuel, "_⌊You must not cease_⌋* from crying out to Yahweh our God, so that he will deliver us from the hand of the Philistines."

²³ Also, as for me, far be it from me _⌊that I should sin_⌋* against Yahweh by ceasing to pray for you! I will instruct you in the good and righteous way.

⁸ _⌊So then_⌋,* take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will pray for you,* for _⌊I will certainly accept his prayer_⌋,* so that it will not be done with you* according to your folly, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has."

⁹ So then, _⌊implore the favor of God_⌋* so that he will be gracious to us. "_⌊This is what you have done_⌋.* _⌊Will he show favor to any of you_⌋?"* says Yahweh of hosts.

²⁴ But Simon answered and* said, "You pray to the Lord for me so that nothing of what you have said will come upon me."

¹⁵ And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins _⌊he will be forgiven_⌋*. ¹⁶ If anyone should see his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he should ask, and he will grant life to him, to those who sin not leading to death. (There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should ask about that.

¹⁹ And they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will listen, but let not God speak with us, lest we die." ²⁰ And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you so that his fear will be before you so that you do not sin."

¹⁶ _⌊Take care_⌋* so that your heart is not easily deceived, and you turn away, and you serve other gods, and you bow down to them.

²⁹ For I know that after my death you will certainly act corruptly, and you will turn aside from the way that I have commanded you, and the disaster in the future days will befall you, because you will do evil* in the eyes of Yahweh, _⌊provoking him with the work of your hands_⌋."*

⁶ Be very strong to observe carefully all that is written in the scroll of the law of Moses so as not to turn aside from it, to the right or left,

⁴ Blessed is the man who makes Yahweh his trust and does not turn to the proud and to those who fall away to a lie.*

³ I will not set before my eyes any wicked thing. I hate the work of those who fall away;* it will not cling to me.

⁵ But regarding those who turn aside to their crooked ways, Yahweh will lead them away with the evildoers. Peace be upon Israel.

¹ A _⌊saying_⌋:* 'Look, if a man divorces his wife, and she goes from him _⌊and she becomes another man's wife_⌋,* will he return to her again?' Will not that land be greatly defiled? And you have prostituted yourself with many lovers, would you now return to me?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁶ But do so with courtesy and respect, having a good conscience, so that in the things in which you are slandered, the ones who malign your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.

²¹ They annoyed me with what is not a god; they provoked me with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those not a people, with a foolish nation I will provoke them.

⁴ Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. ⁵ They have mouths, but cannot speak; they have eyes, but cannot see; ⁶ they have ears, but cannot hear; they have noses, but cannot smell; ⁷ they have their hands, but they cannot feel, their feet, but they cannot walk; they cannot utter a sound in their throats. ⁸ Those who make them become like them, as does everyone who trusts in them.

²³ tell us the things coming _⌊hereafter_⌋,* that* we may know that you are gods. Indeed, do good or* do evil, that* we may be afraid and see* together. ²⁴ Look! you are nothing, and your work is something worthless; whoever chooses you is an abomination.

²⁹ Look! All of them are deception; their works are nothing; their images are wind and emptiness.

⁹ All those who form an idol are nothing, and their delightful things do not profit. And their witnesses do not see or know, so they will be ashamed. ¹⁰ Who would form a god and cast an image of which he cannot profit?

²⁰ Assemble and come; draw near together, survivors of the nations! They do not know, those who carry _⌊their wooden idols_⌋* and pray to a god who cannot save.

⁷ They carry it on their shoulder; they support it and they set it in its place, and it stands in position. It cannot be removed from its place; even when he cries out to it, it does not answer. It does not save him from his trouble.

⁵ Thus says Yahweh:
"What injustice did your ancestors* find in me that they were far from me, and they went after the vanity, and they became vain?

¹³ "For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the source* of living water, to hew out for themselves cisterns, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.

⁸ _⌊At the same time_⌋* they are stupid and foolish, in the instruction of idols, it is wood.

¹⁵ They are vanity, a work of mockery, at the time of their punishment, they will perish.

²² Are there any among the idols of the nation who cause rain to pour? Or can the heavens give showers? Is it not you, O Yahweh our God? Therefore, we hope in you, for you do all these things.

¹⁹ O Yahweh, my strength, and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of distress, to you the nations will come from the ends of the earth, and they will say, "Our ancestors* have inherited only lies,* vanity, and there is no profit in them.

⁸ Those who worship vain idols forsake their loyal love.*

¹⁸ What value is an idol when its carver has fashioned it, a molten idol, a teacher of lies? For he who fashioned his creation trusts in it, though making mute idols!

⁴ Therefore, concerning the eating of food sacrificed to idols, we know that "an idol is nothing in the world" and that "there is no God except one."*

¹² Why should the Egyptians _⌊say_⌋*, 'With evil intent he brought them out to kill them in the mountains and wipe them from the face of the earth'?* Turn from _⌊your fierce anger_⌋* and relent concerning the disaster for your people.

¹³ And Moses said to Yahweh, "Then the Egyptians will hear that you brought up this people from their* midst in your power, ¹⁴ and they will _⌊tell it_⌋* to the inhabitants of this land. They heard that you, Yahweh, are in the midst of this people, that you are seen eye to eye, and your cloud is standing over them, and in a column of cloud you go before them by day and in a column of fire at night. ¹⁵ But if you destroy this people _⌊all at once_⌋,* the nations that will have heard your message will say, ¹⁶ 'Yahweh was unable to bring this people in the land that he swore by an oath, and he slaughtered them in the desert.' ¹⁷ But now, please, let the power of my Lord be great, just has you spoke, ¹⁸ 'Yahweh is _⌊slow to anger_⌋* and great of loyal love, _⌊forgiving_⌋* sin and rebellion; but surely he leaves nothing unpunished, visiting the sin of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generations.' ¹⁹ Please forgive the sin of this people according to the greatness of your loyal love, just as you _⌊forgave_⌋* this people, from Egypt until now."

⁷ "Yahweh loved you and chose you not _⌊because of your great number_⌋* exceeding all other peoples, for you are fewer than all of the peoples, ⁸ but* _⌊because of_⌋* the love of Yahweh for you and because of his keeping of the sworn oath that he swore to your ancestors,* Yahweh brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

⁵ It is not because of your righteousness and because of the uprightness of your heart that you are coming to take possession of their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God is driving them _⌊before you_⌋,* and in order to confirm the _⌊promise_⌋* that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,* to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

² For you are a people holy to Yahweh your God, and you Yahweh has chosen to be a treasured possession from among all of the peoples that are on the surface* of the earth.

¹⁷ And _⌊my anger shall flare up against them_⌋* on that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they* shall become as prey, and disasters and troubles shall find* them,* and they* shall say on that day, 'Is it not because our* God is not in our* midst that these disasters have found* us?'*

²⁶ I thought, "I will wipe them out; _⌊I will make people forget they ever existed_⌋."* ²⁷ If I had not feared a provocation of the enemy, lest their foes might misunderstand, * lest they should say, * "Our hand is _⌊triumphant_⌋,* and Yahweh did not do all this." '

⁹ The Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of this, and they will surround us and cut off our name from the land. What will you do, for your great name?"

¹³ And I will dwell _⌊among_⌋* the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and I will not forsake my people Israel."

¹⁴ I will give up the remainder of my inheritance, and I will give them into the hand of their enemies. They shall become as prey and as spoil for all their enemies,

⁹ "And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and a willing mind, for Yahweh searches all hearts and understands every plan and all thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you abandon him, he will reject you forever.

² And he went out before Asa and said to him, "Hear me, O Asa and all of Judah and Benjamin! Yahweh is with you while you are with him. And if you will seek him he will be found by you. But if you forsake him he will forsake you.

¹⁴ For Yahweh will not abandon his people, nor forsake his inheritance.

⁸ Yet he saved them for the sake of his name, to make known his might.

³⁵ 'And I will defend this city, to save it for my sake and for the sake of David, my servant.'"

¹⁷ The poor and the needy are seeking water and there is none; their tongue is dried up with thirst. I, Yahweh, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

¹⁶ And I will lead the blind by a road they do not know; I will cause them to tread on paths they have not known. I will make darkness _⌊in their presence_⌋* into light and rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I will not forsake them.

²⁵ I, I am the one who blots out your transgressions for my sake, and I will not remember your sins.

¹¹ For my own sake, for my own sake I do it; for why should it* be defiled? And I will not give my glory to another."

⁷ Although our iniquities testify against us, O Yahweh, act for the sake of your name. Yes, our apostasies are many; we have sinned against you.

²¹ You must not spurn us* for the sake of your name, you must not dishonor _⌊your glorious throne_⌋.* Remember us!* You must not break your covenant with us.

²⁴ "Have you not seen how these people speak, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'The two clans* whom Yahweh chose, he has also rejected them'? Thus they spurn my people from being a nation _⌊before them_⌋* any longer. ²⁵ Thus says Yahweh: 'If my covenant with day and with night, the regulations of heaven and earth, I had not established, ²⁶ then the offspring of Jacob and David my servant I would reject, from choosing rulers from his offspring over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for I will restore their fortunes* and I will have compassion on them.'"

³¹ For the Lord will not reject forever. ³² For even though he causes grief he has compassion according to the greatness of his royal love.

²⁰ Why have you forgotten us forever? Why have you forsaken us _⌊for so long_⌋?*

⁹ "But* I acted for the sake of my name _⌊to keep it from being profaned_⌋* before the eyes of the nations _⌊among whom they lived_⌋,* where I made known to them before their eyes, to bring them out from the land of Egypt.

¹⁴ and I acted for the sake of my name, that it not be profaned before the eyes of the nations _⌊before whom I brought them out_⌋.*

² "I have loved you," says Yahweh, but you say, "How have you loved us?" "Is Esau not Jacob's brother?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "I have loved Jacob,

²⁶ Yes, Father, for to do so _⌊was your gracious will_⌋.*

¹⁶ You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and your fruit should remain, in order that whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.

¹³ just as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."* ¹⁴ What then shall we say? There is no injustice with God, is there?* May it never be! ¹⁵ For to Moses he says, "I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I have compassion."* ¹⁶ Consequently therefore, _⌊it does not depend on the_⌋* one who wills or on the one who runs, but on God who shows mercy. ¹⁷ For the scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very reason I have raised you up, so that I may demonstrate my power in you, and so that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."* ¹⁸ Consequently therefore, he has mercy on whomever he wishes, and he hardens whomever he wishes.

²⁹ For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

⁷ For who concedes you superiority? And what do you have that you did not receive? But if indeed you received it, why do you boast as if you* did not receive it?

⁶ to the praise of the glory of his grace that he bestowed on us in the beloved,

¹² that we who hoped beforehand in Christ should be for the praise of his glory,

⁶ convinced of this same thing, that the one who began a good work in you will finish it* until the day of Christ Jesus,

⁵ Your lifestyle must be free from the love of money, being content with what you have. For he himself has said, "I will never desert you, and I will never abandon you."*

⁹ But you are a chosen race,* a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's possession, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light,

³⁶ then you shall hear in heaven and forgive the sin of your servants and your people Israel, for you will teach them the good way in which they should go, and you will give rain upon your land which you have given to your people as an inheritance.

²⁷ then may you yourself hear from the heavens and forgive the sin of your servants and your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk, and give rain upon your land that you have given to your people as an inheritance.

¹¹ Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.

¹¹ In the way of wisdom I have instructed you; I have led you in the path of uprightness.

¹⁰ The Teacher* sought to find delightful words,* and he wrote* what is upright—truthful words.

¹⁶ Thus says Yahweh: "Stand at the roads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the way of the good is, and walk in it, and find rest for your inner selves.* But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'*

²⁰ how I did not shrink from proclaiming to you anything that would be profitable, and from teaching you in public and from house to house,

⁹ For God, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, is my witness, how constantly I make mention of you,

⁹ Because of this also we, from the day we heard about it,* did not cease praying for you, and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual insight,

²⁸ whom we proclaim, by* admonishing every person* and teaching every person* with all wisdom, in order that we may present every person* mature in Christ,

¹⁰ night and day praying beyond all measure that we may see your face and complete what is lacking in your faith?

³ _⌊I am thankful_⌋* to God, whom I have served with a clear conscience _⌊as my ancestors did_⌋*, when _⌊I remember you constantly_⌋* in my prayers night and day,

¹³ And the blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and I will see the blood, and I will pass over you, and there will not be a destructive plague among you when I strike the land of Egypt.

²¹ He is your praise, and he is your God, who has done with you these great and awesome things that your eyes have seen.

¹³ After all that has come upon us for our evil practices and for our great guilt—you, our God, have held back less than our guilt deserved and you have given us a remainder such as this. ¹⁴ Shall we again break your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who practice these detestable things? Would you not be angry with us until you destroy us with no remnant or remainder?

²⁸ And to the human beings he said, 'Look, the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.'"

¹⁰ The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom; all who do them* have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

⁸⁰ May my heart be blameless in your statutes, so that I may not be ashamed.

² Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing. Then they said among the nations, "Yahweh has done great things for these people." ³ Yahweh has done great things for us; we are glad.

⁷ Fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; wisdom and instruction, fools despise.

¹³ Now that all has been heard, here is the final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

¹² And there will be lyre and harp, tambourine and flute, and wine at their feasts, but they do not look at the deeds* of Yahweh, and they do not see the work of his hands.

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Look! _⌊A true Israelite_⌋* in whom is no deceit!"

¹ Therefore I exhort you, brothers, through the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service.

So I will make them jealous with those not a people, with a foolish nation I will provoke them. ²² For a fire was kindled* by my anger, and it burned _⌊up to the depths of Sheol_⌋,* and it devoured the earth and its produce, and it set afire the foundation of the mountains. ²³ I will heap disasters upon them; my arrows I will spend on them. ²⁴ They will become weakened by famine, and consumed by plague and bitter pestilence; and the teeth of wild animals I will send against them, with the poison of the creeping things in the dust; ²⁵ From outside her boundaries the sword will make her childless, and from inside, terror; both for the young man and also the young woman, the infant along with the gray-headed man. ²⁶ I thought, "I will wipe them out; _⌊I will make people forget they ever existed_⌋."* ²⁷ If I had not feared a provocation of the enemy, lest their foes might misunderstand, * lest they should say, * "Our hand is _⌊triumphant_⌋,* and Yahweh did not do all this." ' ²⁸ For _⌊they are a nation void of sense_⌋,* and there is not any understanding in them. ²⁹ If only they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern _⌊for themselves their end_⌋.* ³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two could cause a myriad to flee, if their Rock had not sold them, and Yahweh had not given them up? ³¹ For the fact of the matter is, their rock is not like our Rock, and our enemies recognize* this. ³² For their vine is from the vine of Sodom, and from the terraces of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison; _⌊their clusters are bitter_⌋.* ³³ Their wine is the poison of snakes, and the deadly poison of horned vipers. ³⁴ 'Is not this stored up with me, sealed in my treasuries?'* ³⁵ _⌊Vengeance belongs to me_⌋* and also recompense, _⌊for at the time their foot slips_⌋,* because the day of their disaster is near, _⌊and fate comes quickly for them_⌋.'* ³⁶ For Yahweh will judge on behalf of his people, and concerning his servants; he will change his mind when he sees that their power has disappeared, and there is no one left, confined* or free.* ³⁷ And he will say, 'Where are their gods, their rock in whom* they took refuge? ³⁸ Who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their libations? Let them rise up, and let them help you; _⌊Let them be to you a refuge_⌋.* ³⁹ See, now, that I, even I am he, and there is not a god besides me; I put to death and I give life; I wound and I heal; there is not one who delivers from my hand! ⁴⁰ For indeed I lift up my hand to heaven, And I promise _⌊as I live forever_⌋,* ⁴¹ When I sharpen* _⌊my flashing sword_⌋,* and my hand takes hold* of it in judgment, _⌊I will take reprisals against my foes_⌋,* and my haters I will repay. ⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh with the blood of the slain, and captives* from the heads* of the leaders of the enemy.' ⁴³ Call for songs of joy, O nations, concerning his people,* for the blood of his servants he will avenge, _⌊and he will take reprisals against his foes_⌋,* and he will make atonement for his land, his people." ⁴⁴ And Moses came, and he spoke* all the words of this song in the ears of the people; that is, he and Joshua the son of Nun.

¹ Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and they fell slain on Mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malki-Shua, the sons of Saul. ³ _⌊Saul was in the thick of the battle_⌋,* and _⌊the archers_⌋* spotted* him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. ⁴ Then Saul said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, so that these uncircumcised do not come and thrust me through and make a fool of me!" But _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* was not willing to do so because he was very afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it. ⁵ And when _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him.

³ For now they will say, "We have no king; indeed, we did not fear Yahweh, and what can a king do for us?"
