¹⁷ But that it spread no further among the people, let us strictly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.

⁶⁴ Command therefore that the sepulcher be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

⁴⁷ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many miracles. ⁴⁸ If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

²¹ So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.

²⁹ And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto your servants, that with all boldness they may speak your word, ³⁰ By stretching forth your hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of your holy child Jesus.

²⁴ Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.

²⁸ Saying, Did not we strictly command you that you should not teach in this name? and, behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.

³⁹ But if it be of God, you cannot overthrow it; lest haply you be found even to fight against God. ⁴⁰ And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

¹⁶ But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our report? ¹⁷ So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. ¹⁸ But I say, Have they not heard? yes truthfully, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

¹⁸ For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, ¹⁹ Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. ²⁰ Yes, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation: ²¹ But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand. ²² For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you.

⁸ For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

¹⁵ Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: ¹⁶ Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins always: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.
