¹¹ When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

¹¹ And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, so that he dies: so shall you put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

⁷ But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. ⁸ So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away. ⁹ And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider his doings.

⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁴ The heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge: but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.

¹ A man, having separated himself, seeks his own desire, and rages against all sound wisdom.

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent gets knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

²⁵ Smite a scoffer, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that has understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and died: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. ⁷ Neither be you idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. ⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. ⁹ Neither let us test Christ, as some of them also tested him, and were destroyed by serpents. ¹⁰ Neither murmur you, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer. ¹¹ Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. ² For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; ³ How shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

²⁸ He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much worse punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has done insult unto the Spirit of grace?

¹³ And the same hour there was a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the rest were frightened, and gave glory to the God of heaven.
