¹ Whosoever loves instruction loves knowledge: but he that hates reproof is senseless. ² A good man obtains favor of the LORD: but a man of wicked intentions will he condemn. ³ A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved. ⁴ A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that makes ashamed is like rottenness in his bones. ⁵ The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceitful. ⁶ The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them. ⁷ The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand. ⁸ A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised. ⁹ He that is despised, and has a servant, is better than he that honors himself, and lacks bread. ¹⁰ A righteous man regards the life of his animal: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. ¹¹ He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding. ¹² The wicked desires the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yields fruit. ¹³ The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall escape from trouble. ¹⁴ A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompense of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him. ¹⁵ The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkens unto counsel is wise. ¹⁶ A fool's wrath is at once known: but a prudent man covers shame. ¹⁷ He that speaks truth shows forth righteousness: but a false witness, deceit. ¹⁸ There is one that speaks like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise brings health. ¹⁹ The lip of truth shall be established forever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment. ²⁰ Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counselors of peace there is joy. ²¹ There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with trouble. ²² Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. ²³ A prudent man conceals knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaims foolishness. ²⁴ The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be put to forced labor. ²⁵ Heaviness in the heart of man makes him stoop: but a good word makes him glad. ²⁶ The righteous chooses his friends carefully: but the way of the wicked leads them astray. ²⁷ The slothful man roasts not that which he took in hunting: but the possessions of a diligent man are precious. ²⁸ In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.

⁹ Be you not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, else they come not near unto you.

⁶ A senseless man knows not; neither does a fool understand this.

²⁷ Make me to understand the way of your precepts: so shall I talk of your wondrous works.

⁹⁷ [Mem] O how love I your law! it is my meditation all the day. ⁹⁸ You through your commandments have made me wiser than my enemies: for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers: for your testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the ancients, because I keep your precepts.

¹⁰ When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto your soul; ¹¹ Discretion shall preserve you, understanding shall keep you:

¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me!

¹⁷ I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

³² Now therefore hearken unto me, O you children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

⁷ He that reproves a scoffer gets for himself shame: and he that rebukes a wicked man gets himself injury. ⁸ Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate you: rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.

¹⁰ Correction is grievous unto him that forsakes the way: and he that hates reproof shall die.

¹ A man, having separated himself, seeks his own desire, and rages against all sound wisdom.

³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib: but Israel does not know, my people do not consider.

¹⁰ And with all deception of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

¹⁵ The nations are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.

⁵ A good man shows favor, and lends: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

¹⁸ A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil,

³⁵ For whosoever finds me finds life, and shall obtain favor of the LORD.

⁸ There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither has he power in the day of death: and there is no release from that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

⁵ The foolish person shall be no more called noble, nor the miser said to be bountiful. ⁶ For the foolish person will speak foolishness, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. ⁷ The schemes also of the schemer are evil: he devises wicked plans to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks justly.

²⁴ For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith: and many people were added unto the Lord.

⁷ For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet perhaps for a good man some would even dare to die.

³³ And blessed be your advice, and blessed be you, who has kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with my own hand.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eats up, and takes it even out of the thorns, and the robber swallows up their wealth.

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his wealth continue, neither shall he overspread the earth with it.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? ⁶ Though his haughtiness mounts up to the heavens, and his head reaches unto the clouds; ⁷ Yet he shall perish forever like his own refuse: they who have seen him shall say, Where is he? ⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him.

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and pile up clothing as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He builds his house like a moth, and like a booth that the keeper makes.

⁵ He that puts not out his money at interest, nor takes reward against the innocent. He that does these things shall never be moved.

¹ [A song of ascents.] They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abides forever. ² As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from this time forth even forever.

²⁵ As the whirlwind passes, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

¹² The wicked desires the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yields fruit.

¹⁷ That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

⁷ Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

¹ Every wise woman builds her house: but the foolish plucks it down with her hands.

³⁰ A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping. ¹⁴ House and riches are the inheritance from fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.

⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a whole house.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman.

¹⁵ A continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. ¹⁶ Whosoever restrains her restrains the wind, or grasps oil with his right hand.

¹⁰ Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. ¹¹ The heart of her husband does safely trust in her, so that he shall have no lack of gain. ¹² She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. ¹³ She seeks wool, and flax, and works willingly with her hands. ¹⁴ She is like the merchants' ships; she brings her food from afar. ¹⁵ She rises also while it is yet night, and gives food to her household, and a portion to her maidservants. ¹⁶ She considers a field, and buys it: with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. ¹⁷ She girds her loins with strength, and strengthens her arms. ¹⁸ She perceives that her merchandise is good: her lamp goes not out by night. ¹⁹ She lays her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. ²⁰ She stretches out her hand to the poor; yea, she reaches forth her hands to the needy. ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. ²² She makes herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is fine linen and purple. ²³ Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land. ²⁴ She makes fine linen, and sells it; and delivers sashes unto the merchants. ²⁵ Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

¹⁶ When I heard, my body trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he comes up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops.

⁷ For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

¹¹ Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

² They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. ³ The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaks proud things:

² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful. ³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he has ceased to be wise, and to do good. ⁴ He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.

⁶ And if he comes to see me, he speaks vanity: his heart gathers iniquity to itself; when he goes abroad, he tells it. ⁷ All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt.

¹⁵ I will meditate in your precepts, and have respect unto your ways.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man; ² Who imagine evil in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war. ³ They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.

²³ The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

⁹ The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scoffer is an abomination to men.

⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your vain thoughts lodge within you?

³ When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. ⁵ And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea: for thus it is written by the prophet, ⁶ And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. ⁷ Then Herod, when he had privately called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. ⁸ And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the region thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

⁴ And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

² But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

¹ Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: ² And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will strike the king only: ³ And I will bring back all the people unto you: only the man whom you seek will be struck: so all the people shall be in peace. ⁴ And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

⁷ And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them. ⁸ Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to show it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people. ⁹ And Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai. ¹⁰ Again Esther spoke unto Hathach, and gave him command concerning Mordecai; ¹¹ All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden scepter, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days. ¹² And they told to Mordecai Esther's words. ¹³ Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not to yourself that you shall escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews. ¹⁴ For if you altogether hold your peace at this time, then shall relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but you and your father's house shall be destroyed: and who knows whether you are come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

⁴ For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I would have held my tongue, although the enemy could never compensate for the king's loss. ⁵ Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that dares presume in his heart to do so? ⁶ And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause: ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: ¹³ We shall find all kinds of precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: ¹⁴ Cast in your lot among us; let us all have one purse: ¹⁵ My son, walk not in the way with them; refrain your foot from their path: ¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. ¹⁷ Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. ¹⁸ And they lie in wait for their own blood; they lurk secretly for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone that is greedy of gain; which takes away the life of its owners.

³ In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

²⁶ For among my people are found wicked men: they lie in wait, as he that sets snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

¹ Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grape gleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the first ripe fruit. ² The godly man has perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

¹² And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

¹⁵ Now therefore you with the council inform the chief captain that he bring him down unto you tomorrow, as though you would inquire something more exactly concerning him: and we, before he comes near, are ready to kill him.

³ And desired a favor from him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, plotting to kill him along the way.

¹⁶ And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you: your throne shall be established forever.

²⁶ And let your name be magnified forever, saying, {} The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of your servant David be established before you.

⁶ And in Shushan the citadel the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men. ⁷ And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha, ⁸ And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha, ⁹ And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vaizatha, ¹⁰ The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, they killed; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

¹⁴ And the king commanded it so to be done: and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman's ten sons.

¹⁵ They shall dwell in his tent, who are none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings. ²⁰ They that come after him shall be astounded at his day, as they that went before were frightened.

¹⁸ He builds his house like a moth, and like a booth that the keeper makes. ¹⁹ The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he opens his eyes, and he is not. ²⁰ Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest steals him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he is gone: and as a storm hurls him out of his place. ²² For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would scarcely flee out of his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

²⁵ Therefore he knows their works, and he overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

¹⁰ For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, you shall diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. ³⁷ Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

¹⁸ Surely you did set them in slippery places: you cast them down into destruction. ¹⁹ How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

²¹ Though they join hand to hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the descendants of the righteous shall be delivered.

¹¹ The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tent of the upright shall flourish.

²⁵ The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the boundary of the widow.

³ Through wisdom is a house built; and by understanding it is established: ⁴ And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

²⁴ Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock: ²⁵ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. ²⁶ And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

³⁹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Since God has showed you all this, there is none so discreet and wise as you are:

¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly: you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you: for now would the LORD have established your kingdom upon Israel forever.

¹⁸ Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is skillful in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a handsome person, and the LORD is with him.

³⁰ Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much esteemed.

¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.

¹⁸ His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

²⁶ I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes;

³⁵ The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the recompense of fools.

²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

¹ Who is as the wise man? and who knows the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom makes his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

² And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

⁸ But you have departed out of the way; you have caused many to stumble at the law; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the LORD of hosts. ⁹ Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as you have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.

⁴ Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see you to that. ⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

⁴² And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? ⁴³ Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. ⁴⁴ Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he has.

⁸ And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and died.

¹⁰ According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another builds thereon. But let every man take heed how he builds thereupon. ¹¹ For no other foundation can a man lay than what is laid, which is Jesus Christ. ¹² Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; ¹³ Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall test every man's work of what sort it is. ¹⁴ If any man's work abide which he has built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. ¹⁵ If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

¹⁸ For not he that commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.

⁷ There is one that makes himself rich, yet has nothing: there is one that makes himself poor, yet has great riches.

¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

¹³ And he said unto him, My lord knows that the children are frail, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die. ¹⁴ Let my lord, I pray you, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on slowly, according as the flocks that go before me and the children are able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.

²⁶ And Judah said unto his brothers, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brothers were content. ²⁸ Then there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

²⁸ And the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto you, that you have smitten me these three times? ²⁹ And Balaam said unto the donkey, Because you have mocked me: I would there were a sword in my hand, for now would I kill you. ³⁰ And the donkey said unto Balaam, Am not I your donkey, upon which you have ridden ever since I became yours unto this day? was I ever accustomed to do so unto you? And he said, Nay. ³¹ Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face. ³² And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why have you struck your donkey these three times? behold, I went out to withstand you, because your way is perverse before me:

⁴ You shall not muzzle the ox when it treads out the grain.

⁷ And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered scraps under my table: as I have done, so God has requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

² And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

¹¹ The woman said unto him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from where then have you that living water?

³¹ The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was a high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. ³² Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him.

¹³ For he shall have judgment without mercy, that has showed no mercy; and mercy triumphs over judgment. ¹⁴ What does it profit, my brethren, though a man says he has faith, and has not works? can faith save him? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled; yet you give them not those things which are needful to the body; what does it profit?

¹⁷ But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother have need, and shuts up his heart of compassion from him, how dwells the love of God in him?

¹⁹ In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return unto the ground; for out of it were you taken: for dust you are, and unto dust shall you return.

⁴ And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless persons, who followed him.

⁴ I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with hypocrites.

² For you shall eat the labor of your hands: happy shall you be, and it shall be well with you.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, consent not.

¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

³² But whosoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he that does it destroys his own soul.

⁷ And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

¹³ A foolish woman is boisterous: she is simple, and knows nothing.

¹⁶ Whosoever is simple, let him turn in here: and as for him that lacks understanding, she says to him,

²⁰ He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

²³ Much food is in the fallow ground of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for lack of justice.

⁴ Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.

²³ In all labor there is profit: but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.

²⁷ And you shall have goats' milk enough for your food, for the food of your household, and for the maintenance for your maidservants.

¹⁹ He that tills his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that follows after worthless pursuits shall have poverty enough.

⁸ They that regard vain idols forsake their own mercy.

²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs.

¹¹ And that you study to be quiet, and to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; ¹² That you may walk honestly toward them that are outside, and that you may have lack of nothing.

⁸ Neither did we eat any man's bread for nothing; but worked with labor and travail night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you:

¹⁰ For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, especially they of the circumcision: ¹¹ Whose mouths must be stopped, who ruin whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain.

³ And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does shall prosper.

⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he does catch the poor, when he draws him into his net.

¹⁵ The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

⁵ A man that flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. ⁶ In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous does sing and rejoice.

⁶ He shall cause them that come from Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.

³¹ And the remnant that have escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:

²⁶ For among my people are found wicked men: they lie in wait, as he that sets snares; they set a trap, they catch men. ²⁷ As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they have become great, and grown rich. ²⁸ They have grown fat, they shine: yea, they pass over the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not defend.

⁷ Blessed is the man that trusts in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. ⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreads out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when the heat comes, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be anxious in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

² The godly man has perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

¹⁵ They take up all of them with the hook, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their dragnet: therefore they rejoice and are glad. ¹⁶ Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their dragnet; because by them their portion is luxurious, and their food plentiful. ¹⁷ Shall they therefore empty their net, and continually slay the nations without mercy?

¹³ Those on the rock are they, who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who for awhile believe, and in time of temptation fall away. ¹⁴ And that which fell among thorns are they, who, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. ¹⁵ But that on the good ground are they, who in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.

¹⁶ You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

²² But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

¹⁶ The Angel who redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be perpetuated in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

⁹ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

²³ Then king Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.

⁶ You shall destroy them that speak falsehood: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

⁸ So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.

² You are snared with the words of your mouth, you are taken with the words of your mouth.

⁸ The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked comes in his stead.

² The tongue of the wise uses knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools pours out foolishness.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for blows. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

²³ Whosoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.

¹⁸ It is good that you should take hold of this; yea, also from this withhold not your hand: for he that fears God shall come forth of them all.

²⁴ And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions overpowered them, and broke all their bones in pieces before they ever came at the bottom of the den.

²⁵ Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ As it is written, For your sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

⁹ The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

⁵ My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips:

² A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors feeds on violence.

²³ A man has joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

²⁰ A man's stomach shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. ²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

¹⁰ Say you to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. ¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be done to him.

⁴¹ He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. ⁴² And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

²⁷ For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

⁶ Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; ⁷ And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

² For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;

²⁶ Esteeming the reproach of the Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he looked for the recompense of the reward.

⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

⁷ Be not wise in your own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹² There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

¹⁶ A wise man fears, and departs from evil: but the fool rages, and is confident.

² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weighs the spirits.

²⁵ There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

²⁰ Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days.

² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD weighs the hearts.

¹² See a man wise in his own eyes? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men that can answer reasonably.

¹¹ The rich man is wise in his own eyes; but the poor that has understanding will find him out.

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.

¹³ Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no longer be admonished.

¹⁵ Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto you, will you not surely put me to death? and if I give you counsel, will you not hearken unto me? ¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD lives, that made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men that seek your life. ¹⁷ Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If you will assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your house: ¹⁸ But if you will not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape out of their hand. ¹⁹ And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that have fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me. ²⁰ But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver you. Obey, I beseech you, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto you: so it shall be well unto you, and your soul shall live. ²¹ But if you refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD has shown me: ²² And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Your friends have set upon you, and have prevailed against you: your feet have sunk in the mire, and they have turned away from you. ²³ So they shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans: and you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and you shall cause this city to be burned with fire. ²⁴ Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and you shall not die. ²⁵ But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come unto you, and say unto you, Declare unto us now what you have said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put you to death; also what the king said unto you: ²⁶ Then you shall say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there. ²⁷ Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they ceased speaking with him; for the conversation had not been heard. ²⁸ So Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.

³ For if a man thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, You son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and unto the shame of your mother's nakedness? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the ground, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Therefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. ³² And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Why shall he be slain? what has he done? ³³ And Saul cast a javelin at him to strike him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David. ³⁴ So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no food the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had caused him shame.

¹ And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. ² Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.

¹² Hatred stirs up strife: but love covers all sins.

³³ Wisdom rests in the heart of him that has understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.

²² Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that has it: but the instruction of fools is folly.

⁹ He that covers over a transgression seeks love; but he that repeats a matter separates close friends.

²⁸ He that has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

¹¹ A fool utters all his mind: but a wise man keeps it in till afterwards.

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger:

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all your servants as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house? ¹⁵ Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.

¹⁹ A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

⁵ A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

²⁵ A true witness delivers souls: but a deceitful witness speaks lies.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

²⁸ An ungodly witness scorns judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.

²⁸ A false witness shall perish: but the man that hears speaks constantly.

²⁸ Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause; and deceive not with your lips.

¹⁹ For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;

¹³ And set up false witnesses, who said, This man ceases not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

¹⁶ Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good behavior in Christ.

² Your tongue devises evil; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

⁴ My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁷ Behold, they bellow out with their mouths: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, does hear?

³ Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:

²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

²⁰ The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is of little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for lack of wisdom.

¹⁷ A wicked messenger falls into trouble: but a faithful ambassador is health.

⁴ A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.

⁷ The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish does not so.

²⁴ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

¹⁸ A man that bears false witness against his neighbor is a club, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

³³ And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by plunder, many days.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind: ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

¹⁶ And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shines in its strength.

² In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bore twelve manner of fruit, and yielded its fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

⁴ You love all devouring words, O you deceitful tongue. ⁵ God shall likewise destroy you forever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

⁴ Be you not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus says the LORD of hosts; Turn you now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, says the LORD. ⁵ Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live forever? ⁶ But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our deeds, so has he dealt with us.

³⁵ Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

³ But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? ⁴ While it remained, was it not your own? and after it was sold, was it not in your own power? why have you conceived this thing in your heart? you have not lied unto men, but unto God. ⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and died: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. ⁶ And the young men arose, wrapped him up, and carried him out, and buried him. ⁷ And it was about the space of three hours later, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. ⁸ And Peter said unto her, Tell me whether you sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. ⁹ Then Peter said unto her, How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them who have buried your husband are at the door, and shall carry you out. ¹⁰ Then she fell down immediately at his feet, and died: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

²⁴ He that hates disguises it with his lips, and lays up deceit within himself; ²⁵ When he speaks graciously, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ Whosoever’s hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be revealed before the whole assembly.

⁶ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. ⁷ Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

¹⁶ As for me, I have not hastened from being a shepherd to follow you: neither have I desired the woeful day; you know: that which came out of my lips was right before you.

¹³ Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

¹⁴ And when they were come, they said unto him, Teacher, we know that you are true, and care for no man: for you regard not the person of men, but teach the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? ¹⁵ Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt you me? bring me a penny, that I may see it. ¹⁶ And they brought it. And he said unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's. ¹⁷ And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marveled at him.

²⁹ Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

¹⁴ Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

⁸ Finally, be all of one mind, having compassion one with another, love as brethren, be tender hearted, be courteous: ⁹ Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but on the contrary blessing; knowing that you are unto this called, that you should inherit a blessing. ¹⁰ For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: ¹¹ Let him turn away from evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and pursue it. ¹² For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. ¹³ And who is he that will harm you, if you be followers of that which is good?

¹⁰ There shall no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.

¹⁴ The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from above himself.

¹² Therefore you shall speak unto them this word; Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Every wineskin shall be filled with wine: and they shall say unto you, Do we not certainly know that every wineskin shall be filled with wine? ¹³ Then shall you say unto them, Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David’s throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness. ¹⁴ And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, says the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.

¹⁶ You are filled with shame instead of glory: drink you also, and let your shame be exposed: the cup of the LORD'S right hand shall be turned against you, and utter shame shall be upon your glory.

²⁸ And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

²² Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; ²³ And you are Christ's; and Christ is God's.

¹⁷ For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

¹³ And who is he that will harm you, if you be followers of that which is good?

⁶ Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she has filled, fill to her double.

¹⁶ These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

¹ A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

²⁰ They that are of a perverse heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹⁵ The elder and honorable, he is the head; and the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.

²⁴ But let him that glories glory in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, says the LORD.

¹⁹ And will you profane me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies?

²² Because with lies you have made the heart of the righteous sad, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not turn from his wicked way, to save his life:

⁸ But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

¹⁵ For outside are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie.

¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there lacks not sin: but he that refrains his lips is wise.

¹³ A talebearer reveals secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit conceals the matter.

¹⁶ Every prudent man deals with knowledge: but a fool lays open his folly.

³ Yea also, when he that is a fool walks by the way, his wisdom fails him, and he says to every one that he is a fool.

¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow him up. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is wicked madness. ¹⁴ A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

¹⁵ And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto forced labor.

²¹ Their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy, of those did Solomon conscript for forced labor unto this day.

²⁸ And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.

²⁰ And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

⁴ He becomes poor who has a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

²⁷ The slothful man roasts not that which he took in hunting: but the possessions of a diligent man are precious.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.

² A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causes shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁵ The desire of the slothful kills him; for his hands refuse to labor. ²⁶ He covets greedily all the day long: but the righteous gives and spares not.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion outside, I shall be slain in the streets.

²⁹ See you a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before obscure men.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and weeds had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall your poverty come like a robber; and your want like an armed man.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. ¹⁴ As the door turns upon its hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed. ¹⁵ The slothful hides his hand in his dish; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth. ¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men that can answer reasonably.

¹ And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had never been sad before in his presence. ² Therefore the king said unto me, Why is your countenance sad, seeing you are not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very much afraid,

⁶ I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

¹¹ Why are you cast down, O my soul? and why are you disturbed within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

¹⁸ There is one that speaks like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise brings health.

¹⁰ The heart knows its own bitterness; and a stranger does not share its joy.

¹³ A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

¹⁵ All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart has a continual feast.

²² A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

¹⁴ The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

⁹ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so does the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

⁴ The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he awakens morning by morning, he awakens my ear to hear as the learned.

¹³ And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good and comforting words.

³³ And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed, and to be very troubled; ³⁴ And said unto them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful unto death: tarry you here, and watch.

⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you. ⁵ But if any has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overburden you all. ⁶ Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. ⁷ So that instead you ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with too much sorrow.

³ But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the noble, in whom is all my delight.

¹² At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, with hailstones and coals of fire. ¹³ The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

¹³ The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall escape from trouble.

²⁷ He that has knowledge spares his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

⁴⁶ For if you love them who love you, what reward have you? do not even the tax collectors the same? ⁴⁷ And if you greet your brethren only, what do you more than others? do not even the tax collectors so? ⁴⁸ Be you therefore perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.

³² For if you love them who love you, what thanks have you? for sinners also love those that love them. ³³ And if you do good to them who do good to you, what thanks have you? for sinners also do even the same. ³⁴ And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thanks have you? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. ³⁶ Be you therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

¹³ Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts he any man: ¹⁴ But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

¹⁸ Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. ¹⁹ For this is commendable, if a man for conscience toward God endures grief, suffering wrongfully. ²⁰ For what glory is it, if, when you be buffeted for your faults, you shall take it patiently? but if, when you do well, and suffer for it, you take it patiently, this is commendable with God. ²¹ For even to this were you called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow his steps:

¹⁸ For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that have just escaped from them who live in error. ¹⁹ While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. ²⁰ For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. ²¹ For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog has turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

²⁶ These things have I written unto you concerning them that deceive you.

⁹ And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, who deceives the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

¹⁴ And deceives them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, that had the wound by a sword, and did live.

¹⁶ A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked.

¹⁶ Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure with trouble.

⁸ Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without justice.

² And put a knife to your throat, if you are a man given to appetite.

¹⁵ The slothful hides his hand in his dish; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth.

¹⁵ See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil;

¹¹ For by me your days shall be multiplied, and the years of your life shall be increased.

¹⁶ The labor of the righteous leads to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

¹⁹ As righteousness leads to life: so he that pursues evil pursues it to his own death.

⁹ Has walked in my statutes, and has kept my judgments faithfully; he is just, he shall surely live, says the Lord GOD.

²⁰ The soul that sins, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. ²¹ But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. ²² All his transgressions that he has committed, they shall not be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live. ²³ Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? says the Lord GOD: and not that he should turn from his ways, and live? ²⁴ But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All his righteousness that he has done shall not be remembered: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them shall he die.

²¹ That as sin has reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

²² But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. ²³ For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹¹ For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, ¹² Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live sensibly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone that does righteousness is born of him.

⁷ Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

¹¹ Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that does good is of God: but he that does evil has not seen God.
