¹⁶ They shall go down to the gates of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

¹³ It shall devour patches of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength. ¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.

¹⁸ He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. ¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain: ²⁰ So that his life abhors bread, and his soul the choicest food. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen now stick out. ²² Yea, his soul draws near unto the grave, and his life to those who bring death. ²³ If there be a messenger with him, a mediator, one of a thousand, to show unto man his uprightness: ²⁴ Then he is gracious unto him, and says, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. ²⁵ His flesh shall be younger than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth: ²⁶ He shall pray unto God, and he will be favorable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness. ²⁷ He looks upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; ²⁸ He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

⁴ I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that has no strength: ⁵ Adrift among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom you remember no more: and they are cut off from your hand. ⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deep. ⁷ Your anger lies hard upon me, and you have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah. ⁸ You have put away my acquaintance far from me; you have made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

⁷ Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit fails: hide not your face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

¹⁷ Behold, for my peace I had great bitterness: but you have in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for you have cast all my sins behind your back. ¹⁸ For the grave cannot praise you, death can not celebrate you: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for your truth.

¹¹ Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off on our part.

⁶ I went down to the foundations of the mountains; the earth with her bars closed about me forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God.

⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead:
