¹⁴ Then the king, when he heard these words, was greatly displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he labored till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

They said, Barabbas. ²² Pilate said unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ? They all said unto him, Let him be crucified. ²³ And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. ²⁴ When Pilate saw that he could gain nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see you to it.

²⁶ And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes who sat with him, he would not reject her.

¹³ And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, ¹⁴ Said unto them, You have brought this man unto me, as one that perverts the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man concerning those things of which you accuse him: ¹⁵ No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death was done by him. ¹⁶ I will therefore chastise him, and release him. ¹⁷ (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) ¹⁸ And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: ¹⁹ (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) ²⁰ Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spoke again to them. ²¹ But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

⁷ The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. ⁸ When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; ⁹ And went again into the judgment hall, and said unto Jesus, From where are you? But Jesus gave him no answer. ¹⁰ Then said Pilate unto him, Speak you not unto me? know you not that I have power to crucify you, and have power to release you? ¹¹ Jesus answered, You could have no power at all against me, except it were given you from above: therefore he that delivered me unto you has the greater sin. ¹² And from there on Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: whosoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.
