¹ My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbour, if thou hast struck thy hands for a stranger -

⁹ I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him; if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever.

³² For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying: If I bring him not unto thee, then shall I bear the blame to my father for ever. ³³ Now therefore, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

³ Give now a pledge, be surety for me with Thyself; who else is there that will strike hands with me?

¹⁵ He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it; but he that hateth them that strike hands is secure.

¹⁸ A man void of understanding is he that striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his neighbour.
