⁴⁴ but I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you, and persecute you,

⁴ If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. ⁵ If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under its burden, thou shalt forbear to pass by him; thou shalt surely release it with him.

²² And he answered: 'Thou shalt not smite them; hast thou taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow those whom thou wouldest smite? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.'

⁹ But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out to meet the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them: 'Behold, because the LORD, the God of your fathers, was wroth with Judah, He hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a rage which hath reached up unto heaven. ¹⁰ And now ye purpose to bring the children of Judah and Jerusalem into subjection for bondmen and bondwomen unto you; but are there not even with you acts of guilt of your own against the LORD your God? ¹¹ Now hear me therefore, and send back the captives, that ye have taken captive of your brethren; for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you.' ¹² Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Jehohanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against them that came from the war, ¹³ and said unto them: 'Ye shall not bring in the captives hither; for ye purpose that which will bring upon us guilt against the LORD, to add unto our sins and to our guilt; for our guilt is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.' ¹⁴ So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation. ¹⁵ And the men that have been mentioned by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm-trees, unto their brethren; then they returned to Samaria.

⁴ (7:5) If I have requited him that did evil unto me, or spoiled mine adversary unto emptiness;

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth, I afflicted my soul with fasting; and my prayer, may it return into mine own bosom. ¹⁴ I went about as though it had been my friend or my brother; I bowed down mournful, as one that mourneth for his mother.

²¹ If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink; ²² For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD will reward thee.

²⁷ But I say unto you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you, ²⁸ bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you.

³⁴ And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend, never despairing, and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.

³⁴ And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And parting his garments among them, they cast lots.

⁶⁰ And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

¹⁴ Bless them that persecute you, bless, and curse not.

²⁰ But if thine enemy hunger, feed him, if he thirst, give him to drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. ²¹ Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

¹² and we toil, working with our own hands; being reviled, we bless, being persecuted, we endure, ¹³ being defamed, we entreat; we are made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things, even until now.

⁴ Love suffereth long, and is kind, love envieth not, love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, ⁵ doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not its own, is not provoked, taketh not account of evil, ⁶ rejoiceth not in unrighteousness, but rejoiceth with the truth, ⁷ beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. ⁸ Love never faileth; but whether there be prophecies, they shall be done away, whether there be tongues, they shall cease, whether there be knowledge, it shall be done away.

²³ who, when he was reviled, reviled not again, when he suffered threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling, but contrariwise blessing, knowing that hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
