³⁹ And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads,

⁴ I also could speak as ye do; if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could join words together against you, and shake my head at you.

⁶ (22:7) But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. ⁷ (22:8) All they that see me laugh me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head:

¹⁷ (22:18) I may count all my bones; they look and gloat over me.

¹¹ (31:12) Because of all mine adversaries I am become a reproach, yea, unto my neighbours exceedingly, and a dread to mine acquaintance; they that see me without flee from me. ¹² (31:13) I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind; I am like a useless vessel. ¹³ (31:14) For I have heard the whispering of many, terror on every side; while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

¹⁵ But when I halt they rejoice, and gather themselves together; the abjects gather themselves together against me, and those whom I know not; they tear me, and cease not; ¹⁶ With the profanest mockeries of backbiting they gnash at me with their teeth. ¹⁷ Lord, how long wilt Thou look on? Rescue my soul from their destructions, mine only one from the lions. ¹⁸ I will give Thee thanks in the great congregation; I will praise Thee among a numerous people. ¹⁹ Let not them that are wrongfully mine enemies rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause. ²⁰ For they speak not peace; but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land. ²¹ Yea, they open their mouth wide against me; they say: 'Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.'

⁷ (69:8) Because for Thy sake I have borne reproach; confusion hath covered my face. ⁸ (69:9) I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. ⁹ (69:10) Because zeal for Thy house hath eaten me up, and the reproaches of them that reproach Thee are fallen upon me. ¹⁰ (69:11) And I wept with my soul fasting, and that became unto me a reproach. ¹¹ (69:12) I made sackcloth also my garment, and I became a byword unto them. ¹² (69:13) They that sit in the gate talk of me; and I am the song of the drunkards.

²⁰ (69:21) Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am sore sick; and I looked for some to show compassion, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

² For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of deceit have they opened against me; they have spoken unto me with a lying tongue.

²⁵ I am become also a taunt unto them; when they see me, they shake their head.

¹² 'Let it not come unto you, all ye that pass by! Behold, and see if there be any pain like unto my pain, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of His fierce anger.

¹⁵ All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem: 'Is this the city that men called the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?' ¹⁶ All thine enemies have opened their mouth wide against thee; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say: 'We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.' ¹⁷ The LORD hath done that which He devised; He hath performed His word that He commanded in the days of old; He hath thrown down unsparingly; and He hath caused the enemy to rejoice over thee, He hath exalted the horn of thine adversaries.

²⁹ And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ha! Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, ³⁰ save thyself, and come down from the cross.

³⁵ And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them scoffed at him, saying, He saved others, let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his chosen. ³⁶ And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, offering him vinegar, ³⁷ and saying, If thou art the King of the Jews, save thyself. ³⁸ And there was also a superscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. ³⁹ And one of the malefactors that were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou art the Christ, save thyself and us.

²² who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: ²³ who, when he was reviled, reviled not again, when he suffered threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: ²⁴ who his own self bare our sins in his body upon the tree, that we, having died unto sins, might live unto righteousness, by whose stripes ye were healed.
