²⁴ And they had been sent from the Pharisees.

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, even while for a pretence ye make long prayers; therefore ye shall receive greater condemnation. ¹⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter. ¹⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

²⁶ Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside of them may become clean also.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not baptized of him.

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now ye the Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also? ⁴¹ But give for alms those things which are within, and behold, all things are clean unto you. ⁴² But woe unto you Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass over justice and the love of God; but these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ⁴³ Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as the tombs which appear not, and the men that walk over them know it not.

⁵³ And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things,

¹⁴ And the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they scoffed at him.

¹ Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: ² the same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him.

⁴⁷ The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also led astray? ⁴⁸ Hath any of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees? ⁴⁹ But this multitude that knoweth not the law are accursed.

⁸ For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees confess both.

⁵ having knowledge of me from the first, if they be willing to testify, that after the straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

⁵ circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, as touching the law, a Pharisee, ⁶ as touching zeal, persecuting the church, as touching the righteousness which is in the law, found blameless.
