⁹ Even that it would please God to crush me; that He would let loose His hand, and cut me off!

¹⁴ I am not able to bear all this people myself alone, because it is too heavy for me. ¹⁵ And if Thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray Thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in Thy sight; and let me not look upon my wretchedness.'

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom-tree; and he requested for himself that he might die; and said: 'It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.'

²⁰ Wherewith is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul - ²¹ Who long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures; ²² Who rejoice unto exultation, and are glad, when they can find the grave? -

¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than these my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe it; I shall not live alway; let me alone; for my days are vanity.

¹³ Oh that Thou wouldest hide me in the nether-world, that Thou wouldest keep me secret, until Thy wrath be past, that Thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! -

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.

⁴ For day and night Thy hand was heavy upon me; my sap was turned as in the droughts of summer. Selah

¹⁰ Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have tried thee in the furnace of affliction. ¹¹ For Mine own sake, for Mine own sake, will I do it; for how should it be profaned? And My glory will I not give to another. ¹² Hearken unto Me, O Jacob, and Israel My called: I am He; I am the first, I also am the last. ¹³ Yea, My hand hath laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand hath spread out the heavens; when I call unto them, they stand up together.

³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech Thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.'

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said: 'It is better for me to die than to live.'

⁶ And in those days men shall seek death, and shall in no wise find it, and they shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
