¹ If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, and the judges judge them, by justifying the righteous, and condemning the wicked,

⁶ Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. ⁷ Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not; for I will not justify the wicked.

¹⁶ And I charged your judges at that time, saying: 'Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. ¹⁷ Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of any man; for the judgment is God's; and the cause that is too hard for you ye shall bring unto me, and I will hear it.'

¹⁸ Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, tribe by tribe; and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. ¹⁹ Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons; neither shalt thou take a gift; for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous. ²⁰ Justice, justice shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

⁸ If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, even matters of controversy within thy gates; then shalt thou arise, and get thee up unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose. ⁹ And thou shall come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days; and thou shalt inquire; and they shall declare unto thee the sentence of judgment.

¹⁷ then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges that shall be in those days. ¹⁸ And the judges shall inquire diligently; and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ then shall ye do unto him, as he had purposed to do unto his brother; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.

³ The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me: 'Ruler over men shall be the righteous, even he that ruleth in the fear of God,

⁶ and said to the judges: 'Consider what ye do; for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD; and He is with you in giving judgment. ⁷ Now therefore let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it; for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.' ⁸ Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites and the priests, and of the heads of the fathers' houses of Israel, for the judgment of the LORD, and for controversies. And they returned to Jerusalem. ⁹ And he charged them, saying: 'Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a whole heart. ¹⁰ And whensoever any controversy shall come to you from your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, ye shall warn them, that they be not guilty towards the LORD, and so wrath come upon you and upon your brethren; thus shall ye do, and ye shall not be guilty.

⁷ When I went forth to the gate unto the city, when I prepared my seat in the broad place, ⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves, and the aged rose up and stood; ⁹ The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me; ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed itself with me; my justice was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.

¹ (58:1) For the Leader; Al-tashheth. A Psalm of David; Michtam. (58:2) Do ye indeed speak as a righteous company? Do ye judge with equity the sons of men? ² (58:3) Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh out in the earth the violence of your hands.

² 'How long will ye judge unjustly, and respect the persons of the wicked? Selah ³ Judge the poor and fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and destitute. ⁴ Rescue the poor and needy; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, even they both are an abomination to the LORD.

⁸ Open thy mouth for the dumb, in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. ⁹ Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

¹⁷ Learn to do well; seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

²³ Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves; every one loveth bribes, and followeth after rewards; they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.

²³ That justify the wicked for a reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

⁴ But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the land; and he shall smite the land with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

¹ Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and as for princes, they shall rule in justice. ² And a man shall be as in a hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as by the watercourses in a dry place, as in the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

¹² O house of David, thus saith the LORD: Execute justice in the morning, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest My fury go forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

²⁴ And in a controversy they shall stand to judge; according to Mine ordinances shall they judge it; and they shall keep My laws and My statutes in all My appointed seasons, and they shall hallow My sabbaths.

¹ And I said: Hear, I pray you, ye heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: is it not for you to know justice? ² Who hate the good, and love the evil; who rob their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones;

⁴ Therefore the law is slacked, and right doth never go forth; for the wicked doth beset the righteous; therefore right goeth forth perverted.

¹³ Thou that art of eyes too pure to behold evil, and that canst not look on mischief, wherefore lookest Thou, when they deal treacherously, and holdest Thy peace, when the wicked swalloweth up the man that is more righteous than he;

¹⁸ Then shall ye again discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not.

¹⁰ And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
