⁵ ought ye not to know that the LORD, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? ⁶ Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord. ⁷ And there were gathered unto him vain men, base fellows that strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and faint-hearted, and could not withstand them.

⁴ And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did the house of Ahab; for they were his counsellors after the death of his father, to his destruction. ⁵ He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth-gilead; and the Arameans wounded Joram.

²¹ And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.

¹⁵ Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and He sent unto him a prophet, who said unto him: 'Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which have not delivered their own people out of thy hand?' ¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him: 'Have we made thee of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten?' Then the prophet forbore, and said: 'I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.'

Then the prophet forbore, and said: 'I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.' ¹⁷ Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying: 'Come, let us look one another in the face.' ¹⁸ And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying: 'The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying: Give thy daughter to my son to wife; and there passed by the wild beasts that were in Lebanon, and trod down the thistle. ¹⁹ Thou sayest - lo, thou hast smitten Edom; will thy heart therefore lift thee up to glory therein? abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle with evil, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?' ²⁰ But Amaziah would not hear; for it was of God, that He might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought after the gods of Edom.

⁷ Since the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to spoiling, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former generation, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out - ⁹ For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow -

¹² Is wisdom with aged men, and understanding in length of days? - ¹³ With Him is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.

⁷ I said: 'Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.'

¹ Why are the nations in an uproar? And why do the peoples mutter in vain? ² The kings of the earth stand up, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against His anointed: ³ 'Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.' ⁴ He that sitteth in heaven laugheth, the Lord hath them in derision. ⁵ Then will He speak unto them in His wrath, and affright them in His sore displeasure: ⁶ 'Truly it is I that have established My king upon Zion, My holy mountain.'

¹⁰ (76:11) Surely the wrath of man shall praise Thee; the residue of wrath shalt Thou gird upon Thee.

Selah

¹⁷ There will I make a horn to shoot up unto David, there have I ordered a lamp for Mine anointed.

²⁵ But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof;

²⁸ Say not unto thy neighbour: 'Go, and come again, and to-morrow I will give'; when thou hast it by thee.

⁹ Give to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is an imminent ruin.

⁵ The thoughts of the righteous are right; but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

¹⁵ The way of a fool is straight in his own eyes; but he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsel.

¹⁶ Every prudent man dealeth with forethought; but a fool unfoldeth folly.

²⁰ He that walketh with wise men shall be wise; but the companion of fools shall smart for it.

¹⁶ A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil; but the fool behaveth overbearingly, and is confident.

¹ A soft answer turneth away wrath; but a grievous word stirreth up anger.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water; therefore leave off contention, before the quarrel break out.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

²⁰ Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

²⁷ Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹² As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

¹⁰ Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity; better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

²⁵ He that is of a greedy spirit stirreth up strife; but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be abundantly gratified.

²³ A man's pride shall bring him low; but he that is of a lowly spirit shall attain to honour.

¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

⁸ Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof; and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

² A wise man's understanding is at his right hand; but a fool's understanding at his left. ³ Yea also, when a fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

¹⁶ Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a boy, and thy princes feast in the morning!

⁶ (9:5) For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us; and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Pele- joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom; ⁷ (9:6) That the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts doth perform this.

¹ And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a twig shall grow forth out of his roots.

And let them tell thee now; and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed concerning Egypt. ¹³ The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have caused Egypt to go astray, that are the corner-stone of her tribes. ¹⁴ The LORD hath mingled within her a spirit of dizziness; and they have caused Egypt to stagger in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.

¹ Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of Me; and that form projects, but not of My spirit, that they may add sin to sin;

¹² Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel: because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon; ¹³ Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.

⁶ I was wroth with My people, I profaned Mine inheritance, and gave them into thy hand; thou didst show them no mercy; upon the aged hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the fetters of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

¹³ 'Go, and tell Hananiah, saying: Thus saith the LORD: Thou hast broken the bars of wood; but thou shalt make in their stead bars of iron. ¹⁴ For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him; and I have given him the beasts of the field also.'

²⁰ Thus saith the LORD: If ye can break My covenant with the day, and My covenant with the night, so that there should not be day and night in their season; ²¹ Then may also My covenant be broken with David My servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, My ministers.

²⁵ Thus saith the LORD: If My covenant be not with day and night, if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; ²⁶ then will I also cast away the seed of Jacob, and of David My servant, so that I will not take of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; for I will cause their captivity to return, and will have compassion on them.'

² and said unto Jeremiah the prophet: 'Let, we pray thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the LORD thy God, even for all this remnant; for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us; ³ that the LORD thy God may tell us the way wherein we should walk, and the thing that we should do.' ⁴ Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them: 'I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.' ⁵ Then they said to Jeremiah: 'The LORD be a true and faithful witness against us, if we do not even according to all the word wherewith the LORD thy God shall send thee to us.

²⁰ For ye have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for ye sent me unto the LORD your God, saying: Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it;

²⁴ And My servant David shall be king over them, and they all shall have one shepherd; they shall also walk in Mine ordinances, and observe My statutes, and do them. ²⁵ And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob My servant, wherein your fathers dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, they, and their children, and their children's children, for ever; and David My servant shall be their prince for ever.

⁷ (6:8) All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the ministers and the governors, have consulted together that the king should establish a statute, and make a strong interdict, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

¹¹ In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof, and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;

⁷ and Solomon begat Rehoboam, and Rehoboam begat Abijah, and Abijah begat Asa,

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

¹⁹ Behold, I give unto you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall in any wise hurt you.

¹⁴ But his citizens hated him, and sent an ambassage after him, saying, We will not that this man reign over us.

²⁷ But these mine enemies, that would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

⁶⁶ Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

⁵³ And they went every man unto his own house:

³⁷ But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they believed not on him: ³⁸ that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? And to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? ³⁹ For this cause they could not believe, for that Isaiah said again,

²⁴ They said therefore one to another, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my garments among them, And upon my vesture did they cast lots.

³² The soldiers therefore came, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him: ³³ but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: ³⁴ howbeit one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and straightway there came out blood and water. ³⁵ And he that hath seen hath borne witness, and his witness is true; and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye also may believe. ³⁶ For these things came to pass, that the scripture might be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

²³ him, being delivered up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye having taken by the hands of lawless men, did crucify and slay:

³⁰ Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, to raise up the Christ to sit upon his throne,

²⁸ to do whatsoever thy hand and thy council foreordained to come to pass.

⁵⁷ But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord, ⁵⁸ and they cast him out of the city, and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

²⁵ For he must reign, till he hath put all his enemies under his feet.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.

³ For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments; and his commandments are not grievous.

³ And out of the smoke came forth locusts upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

⁵ And it was given them that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months; and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when it striketh a man.

¹⁰ And they have tails like unto scorpions, and stings, and in their tails they have power to hurt men five months.

¹⁶ I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright, the morning star.
