⁵ And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.

¹³ “Then there are those who rebel against the light; they are not acquainted with its ways; and they don’t stay on its course. ¹⁴ The murderer rises at dawn to kill the poor and needy; at night, he is like a thief. ¹⁵ The adulterer watches for twilight, saying, ‘No eye is watching me’ while he veils his face. ¹⁶ They break into houses in the dark; during the day they remained sealed in. They don’t know daylight. ¹⁷ As a group, deep darkness is their morning time; fear that lives in darkness is their friend.”

²² “You naïve ones, how long will you love naiveté? And how long will scoffers delight in scoffing or fools hate knowledge?”

²⁹ “Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD; ³⁰ they did not want my advice, and they rejected all my correction.

¹⁰ He was in the world, and the world was made through him. Yet the world did not recognize him.

¹⁹ And this is the basis for judgment: The light has come into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light because their actions were evil. ²⁰ Everyone who practices wickedness hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his actions may not be exposed.

³⁶ As long as you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.” After Jesus had said this, he went away and hid from them.
³⁷ The Unbelief of the JewsAlthough he had performed numerous signs in their presence, they did not believe in him, ³⁸ so that what the prophet Isaiah spoke might be fulfilled when he said: “Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the Lord’s power been revealed?”
³⁹ This is why they could not believe: Isaiah also said, ⁴⁰ “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they might not perceive with their eyes, and understand with their mind and turn, and I would heal them.”

²⁸ Furthermore, because they did not think it worthwhile to keep knowing God fully, God delivered them to degraded minds to perform acts that should not be done.

¹⁴ A person who isn’t spiritual doesn’t accept the things of God’s Spirit, for they are nonsense to him. He can’t understand them because they are spiritually evaluated.
