¹ Instructions Regarding the Tribal Nations“When the LORD your God brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, he will drive out many nations before you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations who are more numerous and stronger than you.

³¹ For you are about to cross the Jordan River to go in and possess the land that the LORD your God is about to give you to inherit and live in.

⁷ The LORD told Samuel, “Listen to the people in all that they say to you. In fact, it’s not you they have rejected, but rather they have rejected me from being their king.

¹⁹ The people refused to listen to Samuel. Instead, they insisted, “No! Let a king rule over us instead! ²⁰ We, too, will be like all the nations! Our king will govern us and go out before us to fight our battles.”

¹⁹ Then all the people told Samuel, “Pray to the LORD your God for your servants, so that we don’t die, because we made all our sins worse by asking for a king for ourselves.”
