⁷ What shall we say then? Is the Lawe sinne? God forbid. Nay, I knewe not sinne, but by the Lawe: for I had not knowen lust, except the Lawe had sayd, Thou shalt not lust.

⁶ So the woman (seeing that the tree was good for meate, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to get knowledge) tooke of the fruite thereof, and did eate, and gaue also to her husband with her, and he did eate.

¹⁷ Thou shalt not couet thy neighbours house, neither shalt thou couet thy neighbours wife, nor his man seruant, nor his mayde, nor his oxe, nor his asse, neyther any thing that is thy neighbours.

²¹ Neither shalt thou couet thy neighbours wife, neither shalt thou desire thy neighbours house, his fielde, nor his man seruant, nor his mayd, his oxe, nor his asse, nor ought that thy neighbour hath.

¹ After these things Naboth the Izreelite had a vineyarde in Izreel, hard by the palace of Ahab King of Samaria. ² And Ahab spake vnto Naboth, saying, Giue me thy vineyarde, that I may make mee a garden of herbes thereof, because it is neere by mine house: and I will giue thee for it a better vineyarde then it is: or if it please thee, I will giue thee the worth of it in money. ³ And Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord keepe me from giuing the inheritance of my father vnto thee. ⁴ Then Ahab came into his house heauie and in displeasure, because of the word which Naboth the Izreelite had spoken vnto him. for hee had sayde, I will not giue thee the inheritance of my fathers, and he lay vpon his bed, and turned his face and would eate no bread.

⁷ The Lawe of the Lord is perfite, conuerting the soule: the testimonie of the Lord is sure, and giueth wisedome vnto the simple. ⁸ The statutes of the Lord are right and reioyce the heart: the commandement of the Lord is pure, and giueth light vnto the eyes. ⁹ The feare of the Lord is cleane, and indureth for euer: the iudgements of the Lord are trueth: they are righteous altogether, ¹⁰ And more to be desired then golde, yea, then much fine golde: sweeter also then honie and the honie combe. ¹¹ Moreouer by them is thy seruant made circumspect, and in keeping of them there is great reward. ¹² Who can vnderstand his faultes? clense me from secret fautes.

⁹⁶ I haue seene an ende of all perfection: but thy commandement is exceeding large.

² And they couet fields, and take them by violence, and houses, and take them away: so they oppresse a man and his house, euen man and his heritage.

²⁸ But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adulterie with her already in his heart.

¹⁵ Wherefore he said vnto them, Take heede, and beware of couetousnesse: for though a man haue abundance, yet his life standeth not in his riches.

³³ I haue coueted no mans siluer, nor gold, nor apparell.

⁵ Now if our vnrighteousnes comend the righteousnes of God, what shall we say? Is God vnrighteous which punisheth? (I speake as a man.)

²⁰ Therefore by the woorkes of the Lawe shall no flesh be iustified in his sight: for by the Lawe commeth the knowledge of sinne.

¹ What shall we say then, that Abraham our father hath found concerning the flesh?

¹⁵ For the Lawe causeth wrath: for where no Lawe is, there is no transgression.

¹⁵ What then? shall we sinne, because we are not vnder the Law, but vnder grace? God forbid.

⁵ For when we were in ye flesh, the affections of sinnes, which were by the Law, had force in our members, to bring foorth fruit vnto death.

⁸ But sinne tooke an occasion by ye commandement, and wrought in me all maner of concupiscence: for without the Lawe sinne is dead.

¹¹ For sinne tooke occasion by the commandement, and deceiued me, and thereby slewe me.

¹³ Was that then which is good, made death vnto me? God forbid: but sinne, that it might appeare sinne, wrought death in me by that which is good, that sinne might be out of measure sinfull by the commandement.

⁹ For this, Thou shalt not commit adulterie, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steale, Thou shalt not beare false witnes, Thou shalt not couet: and if there be any other commandement, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, euen in this, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour as thy selfe.

⁵⁶ The sting of death is sinne: and ye strength of sinne is the Lawe.

³ But fornication, and all vncleannesse, or couetousnesse, let it not be once named among you, as it becommeth Saintes,

⁵ Mortifie therefore your members which are on the earth, fornication, vncleannes, the inordinate affection, euill concupiscence, and couetousnes which is idolatrie.

⁵ And not in the lust of concupiscence, euen as the Gentiles which know not God:

¹⁵ Loue not this world, neither the things that are in this world. If any man loue this world, the loue of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in this world (as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life) is not of the Father, but is of this world.
