⁵ A man that flattereth his neighbour, spreadeth a net for his steps.

¹⁷ Therefore thine handmaid sayd, The word of my lord the King shall now be comfortable: for my lorde the King is euen as an Angel of God in hearing of good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God be with thee. ¹⁸ Then the King answered, and said vnto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall aske thee. And the woman sayde, Let my lord the King now speake. ¹⁹ And the King said, Is not the hand of Ioab with thee in all this? Then the woman answered, and sayd, As thy soule liueth, my lord the King, I will not turne to the right hande nor to the left, from ought that my lorde the King hath spoken: for euen thy seruant Ioab bade mee, and he put all these wordes in the mouth of thine handmayde. ²⁰ For to the intent that I should chage the forme of speach, thy seruant Ioab hath done this thing: but my lord is wise according to the wisdome of an Angel of God to vnderstande all things that are in the earth. ²¹ And the King sayde vnto Ioab, Beholde nowe, I haue done this thing: go then, and bring the yong man Absalom againe. ²² And Ioab fell to the grounde on his face, and bowed himselfe, and thanked the King. Then Ioab sayde, This day thy seruant knoweth, that I haue found grace in thy sight, my lord the King, in that the King hath fulfilled the request of his seruant. ²³ And Ioab arose, and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Ierusalem. ²⁴ And the King sayde, Let him turne to his owne house, and not see my face. So Absalom turned to his owne house, and saw not the Kings face.

⁵ For the eyes of his children shall faile, that speaketh flattery to his friends.

⁹ For no constancie is in their mouth: within, they are very corruption: their throte is an open sepulchre, and they flatter with their tongue.

² They speake deceitfully euery one with his neighbour, flattering with their lips, and speake with a double heart.

¹⁷ Certainely as without cause the net is spred before the eyes of all that hath wing:

⁵ That they may keepe thee from the strange woman, euen from the stranger that is smoothe in her wordes.

²¹ Thus with her great craft she caused him to yeelde, and with her flattering lips she entised him.

¹⁹ He that goeth about as a slanderer, discouereth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

²⁴ He that hateth, will counterfaite with his lips, but in his heart he layeth vp deceite. ²⁵ Though he speake fauourably, beleeue him not: for there are seuen abominations in his heart.

²⁸ A false tongue hateth the afflicted, and a flattering mouth causeth ruine.

¹³ From aboue hath hee sent fire into my bones, which preuaile against them: he hath spred a net for my feete, and turned me backe: hee hath made me desolate, and daily in heauinesse.

¹ O ye Priestes, heare this, and hearken ye, O house of Israel, and giue ye eare, O house of the King: for iudgement is towarde you, because you haue bene a snare on Mizpah, and a net spred vpon Tabor.

²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should faine themselues iust men, to take him in his talke, and to deliuer him vnto the power and authoritie of the gouernour. ²¹ And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest, and teachest right, neither doest thou accept mans person, but teachest the way of God truely.

¹⁸ For they that are such, serue not the Lord Iesus Christ, but their owne bellies, and with faire speach and flattering deceiue the heartes of the simple.

⁵ Neither yet did we euer vse flattering wordes, as ye knowe, nor coloured couetousnes, God is recorde.
