⁸ And when his disciples sawe it, they had indignation, saying, What needed this waste?

¹⁷ But he said, Ye are to much idle: therfore ye say, Let vs goe to offer sacrifice to the Lord.

²⁸ And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake vnto the men, and Eliab was verie angrie with Dauid, and sayde, Why camest thou downe hither? and with whome hast thou left those fewe sheepe in the wildernesse? I knowe thy pride and the malice of thine heart, that thou art come downe to see the battell. ²⁹ Then Dauid sayde, What haue I nowe done? Is there not a cause?

⁴ Also I beheld all trauaile, and all perfection of workes that this is ye enuie of a man against his neighbour: this also is vanitie and vexation of spirit.

⁵ Saying, When will the newe moneth bee gone, that we may sell corne? and the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheate, and make the Ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifie the weights by deceit?

² Thus speaketh the Lord of hostes, saying, This people say, The time is not yet come, that the Lords House should be builded. ³ Then came the worde of the Lord by the ministerie of the Prophet Haggai, saying, ⁴ Is it time for your selues to dwell in your sieled houses, and this House lie waste?

⁷ Ye offer vncleane bread vpon mine altar, and you say, Wherein haue we polluted thee? In that ye say the table of the Lord is not to be regarded. ⁸ And if yee offer the blinde for sacrifice, it is not euill: and if ye offer the lame and sicke, it is not euill: offer it nowe vnto thy prince: will he be content with thee, or accept thy person, saieth the Lord of hostes? ⁹ And nowe, I pray you, pray before God, that he may haue mercie vpon vs: this hath beene by your meanes: will hee regard your persons, sayth the Lord of hostes? ¹⁰ Who is there euen among you, that would shut the doores? and kindle not fire on mine altar in vaine, I haue no pleasure in you, sayeth the Lord of hostes, neither will I accept an offering at your hande.

¹³ Ye said also, Beholde, it is a wearines, and ye haue snuffed at it, sayth the Lord of hostes, and ye offred that which was torne, and the lame and the sicke: thus yee offred an offring: shoulde I accept this of your hand, sayth the Lord?

⁴ Therefore some disdained among themselues, and sayde, To what ende is this waste of oyntment?

⁴ Then said one of his disciples, euen Iudas Iscariot Simons sonne, which should betray him: ⁵ Why was not this oyntment sold for three hundreth pence, and giuen to the poore? ⁶ Nowe he said this, not that he cared for the poore, but because hee was a theefe, and had the bagge, and bare that which was giuen.
