² Inquire, I pray thee, of the Lord for vs, (for Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel maketh warre against vs) if so be that the Lord will deale with vs according to all his wonderous workes, that he may returne vp from vs.

¹ Then the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying, ² Speake to the children of Israel, that they returne and campe before Pi-hahiroth, betweene Migdol and the Sea, ouer against Baal-zephon: about it shall ye campe by the Sea. ³ For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are tangled in the land: the wildernesse hath shut them in. ⁴ And I will harden Pharaohs heart that hee shall follow after you: so I will get mee honour vpon Pharaoh, and vpon all his hoste: the Egyptians also shall knowe that I am the Lord: and they did so. ⁵ Then it was told the King of Egypt, that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his seruants was turned against the people, and they sayde, Why haue we this done, and haue let Israel go out of our seruice? ⁶ And he made ready his charets, and tooke his people with him, ⁷ And tooke sixe hundreth chosen charets, and all the charets of Egypt, and captaines ouer euery one of them. ⁸ (For the Lord had hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he followed after the children of Israel: but the children of Israel went out with an hie hand) ⁹ And the Egyptians pursued after them, and all the horses and charets of Pharaoh, and his horsemen and his hoste ouertooke them camping by the Sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon. ¹⁰ And when Pharaoh drew nie, the children of Israel lift vp their eyes, and beholde, the Egyptians marched after them, and they were sore afrayde: wherefore the children of Israel cried vnto the Lord. ¹¹ And they sayde vnto Moses, Hast thou brought vs to die in the wildernes, because there were no graues in Egypt? wherefore hast thou serued vs thus, to carie vs out of Egypt? ¹² Did not wee tell thee this thing in Egypt, saying, Let vs be in rest, that we may serue the Egyptians? for it had bene better for vs to serue the Egyptians, then that wee shoulde dye in the wildernesse. ¹³ Then Moses sayde to the people, Feare ye not, stand still, and beholde the saluation of the Lord which he will shew to you this day. For the Egyptians, whome ye haue seene this day, ye shall neuer see them againe. ¹⁴ The Lord shall fight for you: therefore hold you your peace. ¹⁵ And the Lord sayd vnto Moses, Wherefore cryest thou vnto me? speake vnto the children of Israel that they go forward:

¹ Now when Adoni-zedek King of Ierusalem had heard how Ioshua had taken Ai and had destroyed it, (for as he had done to Iericho and to the King thereof, so he had done to Ai and to the King thereof) and howe the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them, ² Then they feared exceedingly: for Gibeon was a great citie, as one of the royall cities: for it was greater then Ai, and all the men thereof were mightie. ³ Wherefore Adoni-zedek King of Ierusalem sent vnto Hoham King of Hebron, and vnto Piram King of Iarmuth, and vnto Iapia King of Lachish, and vnto Debir King of Eglon, saying, ⁴ Come vp vnto me, and helpe me, that we may smite Gibeon: for they haue made peace with Ioshua and with the children of Israel. ⁵ Therefore the fiue Kings of the Amorites, the King of Ierusalem, the King of Hebron, the King of Iarmuth, the King of Lachish, and the King of Eglon gathered themselues together, and went vp, they with all their hostes, and besieged Gibeon, and made warre against it. ⁶ And the men of Gibeon sent vnto Ioshua, euen to the hoste to Gilgal, saying, Withdrawe not thine hand from thy seruants: come vp to vs quickly, and saue vs, and helpe vs: for all the Kings of the Amorites which dwell in the mountaines, are gathered together against vs. ⁷ So Ioshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of warre with him, and all the men of might. ⁸ And the Lord sayd vnto Ioshua, Feare them not: for I haue giuen them into thine hand: none of them shall stand against thee. ⁹ Ioshua therefore came vnto them suddenly: for he went vp from Gilgal all the night. ¹⁰ And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth vp to Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah and to Makkedah. ¹¹ And as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going downe to Beth-horon, the Lord cast downe great stones from heauen vpon them, vntill Azekah, and they dyed: they were more that dyed with the hailestones, then they whom the children of Israel slewe with the sword.

¹ And the children of Israel began againe to do wickedly in the sight of the Lord when Ehud was dead. ² And the Lord sold them into the hande of Iabin King of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor, whose chiefe Captaine was called Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. ³ Then the children of Israel cryed vnto the Lord: (for he had nine hundreth charets of yron, and twentie yeeres he had vexed the children of Israel very sore) ⁴ And at that time Deborah a Prophetesse the wife of Lapidoth iudged Israel. ⁵ And this Deborah dwelt vnder a palme tree, betweene Ramah and Beth-el in mount Ephraim, and the children of Israel came vp to her for iudgement.

²⁷ And the children of Israel asked the Lord (for there was the Arke of the couenat of God in those dayes,

¹⁰ And as Samuel offered the burnt offering, the Philistims came to fight against Israel: but the Lord thundred with a great thunder that day vpon the Philistims, and scattered them: so they were slaine before Israel. ¹¹ And the men of Israel went from Mizpeh and pursued the Philistims, and smote them vntill they came vnder Beth-car. ¹² Then Samuel tooke a stone and pitched it betweene Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name thereof, Eben-ezer, and he sayd, Hitherto hath the Lord holpen vs.

²² Therefore they asked the Lord againe, if that man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Beholde, he hath hid himselfe among the stuffe.

⁶ And Ionathan saide to the yong man that bare his armour, Come, and let vs goe ouer vnto the garison of these vncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will worke with vs: for it is not hard to the Lord to saue with many, or with fewe. ⁷ And he that bare his armour, saide vnto him, Doe all that is in thine heart: goe where it pleaseth thee: beholde, I am with thee as thine heart desireth. ⁸ Then said Ionathan, Beholde, we goe ouer vnto those men, and will shewe our selues vnto them. ⁹ If they say on this wise to vs, Tarie vntill we come to you, then we will stand still in our place, and not goe vp to them. ¹⁰ But if they say, Come vp vnto vs, then we will goe vp: for the Lord hath deliuered them into our hande: and this shall be a signe vnto vs. ¹¹ So they both shewed themselues vnto the garison of the Philistims: and the Philistims said, See, the Ebrewes come out of the holes wherein they had hid themselues. ¹² And the men of the garison answered Ionathan, and his armour bearer, and said, Come vp to vs: for we will shewe you a thing. Then Ionathan said vnto his armour bearer, Come vp after me: for the Lord hath deliuered them into the hand of Israel. ¹³ So Ionathan went vp vpon his hands and vpon his feete, and his armour bearer after him: and some fell before Ionathan, and his armour bearer slewe others after him. ¹⁴ So the first slaughter which Ionathan and his armour bearer made, was about twentie men, as it were within halfe an acre of land which two oxen plowe.

⁴⁵ Then sayd Dauid to the Philistim, Thou commest to me with a sword, and with a speare, and with a shield, but I come to thee in the Name of the Lord of hostes, the God of the hoste of Israel, whom thou hast rayled vpon. ⁴⁶ This day shall the Lord close thee in mine hand, and I shall smite thee, and take thine head from thee, and I wil giue the carkeises of the hoste of the Philistims this daye vnto the foules of the heauen, and to the beasts of the earth, that all the world may know that Israel hath a God, ⁴⁷ And that all this assembly may know, that the Lord saueth not with sworde nor with speare (for the battel is the Lords) and he will giue you into our handes. ⁴⁸ And when the Philistim arose to come and drawe neere vnto Dauid, Dauid hasted and ran to fight against the Philistim. ⁴⁹ And Dauid put his hande in his bagge, and tooke out a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistim in his forehead, that the stone sticked in his forehead, and he fell groueling to the earth. ⁵⁰ So Dauid ouercame the Philistim with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistim, and slew him, when Dauid had no sword in his hand.

⁶ Therefore Saul asked counsel of the Lord, and the Lord answered him not, neither by dreames, nor by Vrim, nor yet by Prophets.

¹⁵ And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me vp? Then Saul answered, I am in great distresse: for the Philistims make warre against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by Prophetes, neither by dreames: therefore I haue called thee, that thou mayest tell me, what I shall doe.

² And Ieroboam saide vnto his wife, Vp, I pray thee, and disguise thy selfe, that they know not that thou art the wife of Ieroboam, and goe to Shiloh: for there is Ahiiah the Prophet, which tolde mee that I shoulde bee King ouer this people, ³ And take with thee tenne loaues and craknels, and a bottell of honie, and go to him: hee shall tell thee what shall become of the yong man.

³ (Then the King of Israel saide vnto his seruants, Knowe yee not that Ramoth Gilead was ours? and wee stay, and take it not out of ye hand of the King of Aram?) ⁴ And he sayde vnto Iehoshaphat, Wilt thou goe with mee to battel against Ramoth Gilead? And Iehoshaphat saide vnto the King of Israel, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and mine horses as thine horses. ⁵ Then Iehoshaphat saide vnto the King of Israel, Aske counsaile, I pray thee, of the Lord to day. ⁶ Then the King of Israel gathered the prophets vpon a foure hundreth men, and said vnto them, Shal I go against Ramoth Gilead to battel, or shall I let it alone? And they said, Go vp: for ye Lord shall deliuer it into the hands of the King. ⁷ And Iehoshaphat said, Is there here neuer a Prophet of the Lord more, that we might inquire of him? ⁸ And the King of Israel said vnto Iehoshaphat, There is yet one man (Michaiah the sonne of Imlah) by whom we may aske counsel of the Lord, but I hate him: for he doeth not prophecie good vnto me, but euill. And Iehoshaphat sayd, Let not the King say so.

³ Then the Angel of the Lord said to Eliiah the Tishbite, Arise, and goe vp to meete the messengers of the King of Samaria, and say vnto them, Is it not because there is no God in Israel, that ye goe to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron?

¹¹ But Iehoshaphat saide, Is there not here a Prophet of the Lord, that we may inquire of the Lord by him? And one of the King of Israels seruants answered, and said, Here is Elisha the sonne of Shaphat, which powred water on the handes of Eliiah. ¹² Then Iehoshaphat saide, The worde of the Lord is with him. Therefore the King of Israel, and Iehoshaphat, and the King of Edom went downe to him. ¹³ And Elisha sayde vnto the King of Israel, What haue I to doe with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father and to the prophets of thy mother. And the King of Israel saide vnto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three Kings, to giue them into the hande of Moab. ¹⁴ Then Elisha said, As the Lord of hostes liueth, in whose sight I stande, if it were not, that I regarde the presence of Iehoshaphat the King of Iudah, I woulde not haue looked towarde thee, nor seene thee.

¹³ Go ye and inquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Iudah concerning the wordes of this booke that is founde: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against vs, because our fathers haue not obeyed the wordes of this booke, to doe according vnto all that which is written therein for vs. ¹⁴ So Hilkiah the Priest and Ahikam, and Achbor and Shaphan, and Asahiah went vnto Huldah the Prophetesse the wife of Shallum, ye sonne of Tikuah, the sonne of Harhas keeper of the wardrobe: (and she dwelt in Ierusalem in the colledge) and they communed with her.

¹ And in the ninth yeere of his reigne, the tenth moneth and tenth day of the moneth Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel came, he, and all his hoste against Ierusalem, and pitched against it, and they built fortes against it round about it. ² So the citie was besieged vnto the eleueth yeere of King Zedekiah.

⁹ And there came out against them Zerah of Ethiopia with an hoste of ten hundreth thousande, and three hundreth charets, and came vnto Mareshah. ¹⁰ Then Asa went out before him, and they set the battell in aray in the valley of Zephathah beside Mareshah. ¹¹ And Asa cryed vnto the Lord his God, and saide, Lord, it is nothing with thee to helpe with many, or with no power: helpe vs, O Lord our God: for we rest on thee, and in thy Name are we come against this multitude: O Lord, thou art our God, let not man preuaile against thee. ¹² So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa and before Iudah, and the Ethiopians fled. ¹³ And Asa and the people that was with him, pursued them vnto Gerar. And the Ethiopians hoste was ouerthrowen, so that there was no life in them: for they were destroyed before the Lord and before his hoste: and they caryed away a mightie great spoyle.

¹ After this also came the children of Moab and the children of Ammon, and with them of the Ammonites against Iehoshaphat to battell. ² Then there came that tolde Iehoshaphat, saying, There commeth a great multitude against thee from beyonde the Sea, out of Aram: and beholde, they bee in Hazzon Tamar, which is En-gedi. ³ And Iehoshaphat feared, and set him selfe to seeke the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Iudah. ⁴ And Iudah gathered them selues together to aske counsel of the Lord: they came euen out of all the cities of Iudah to inquire of the Lord, ⁵ And Iehoshaphat stoode in the Congregation of Iudah and Ierusalem in the house of the Lord before the new court, ⁶ And saide, O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heauen? and reignest not thou on all the kingdomes of the heathen? and in thine hande is power and might, and none is able to withstand thee. ⁷ Diddest not thou our God cast out ye inhabitants of this lande before thy people Israel, and gauest it to the seede of Abraham thy friende for euer? ⁸ And they dwelt therein, and haue built thee a Sanctuarie therein for thy Name, saying, ⁹ If euill come vpon vs, as the sworde of iudgement, or pestilence, or famine, we will stande before this house and in thy presence (for thy name is in this house) and will crie vnto thee in our tribulation, and thou wilt heare and helpe. ¹⁰ And now beholde, the children of Ammon and Moab, and mount Seir, by whome thou wouldest not let Israel goe, when they came out of the land of Egypt: but they turned aside from them, and destroyed them not: ¹¹ Behold, I say, they reward vs, in comming to cast vs out of thine inheritance, which thou hast caused vs to inherit. ¹² O our God, wilt thou not iudge them? for there is no strength in vs to stand before this great multitude that commeth against vs, neither doe wee knowe what to doe: but our eyes are toward thee. ¹³ And all Iudah stoode before the Lord with their yong ones, their wiues, and their children. ¹⁴ And Iahaziel the sonne of Zechariah the sonne of Benaiah, the sonne of Ieiel, the sonne of Mattaniah, a Leuite of the sonnes of Asaph was there, vpon whome came the Spirite of ye Lord, in the middes of the Congregation. ¹⁵ And he said, Hearken ye, all Iudah, and ye inhabitantes of Ierusalem, and thou, King Iehoshaphat: thus saith the Lord vnto you, Feare you not, neither be afraide for this great multitude: for the battel is not yours, but Gods. ¹⁶ To morowe goe yee downe against them: beholde, they come vp by the cleft of Ziz, and ye shall finde them at the ende of the brooke before the wildernesse of Ieruel. ¹⁷ Ye shall not neede to fight in this battell: stand still, moue not, and behold the saluation of the Lord towardes you: O Iudah, and Ierusalem, feare ye not, neither be afraid: to morow goe out against them, and the Lord wilbe with you. ¹⁸ Then Iehoshaphat bowed downe with his face to the earth, and all Iudah and the inhabitants of Ierusalem fell downe before the Lord, worshipping the Lord. ¹⁹ And the Leuites of the children of the Kohathites and of the childre of the Corhites stood vp to prayse the Lord God of Israel with a loude voyce on hie. ²⁰ And when they arose early in the morning, they went forth to the wildernesse of Tekoa: and as they departed, Iehoshaphat stoode and sayde, Heare ye me, O Iudah, and ye inhabitants of Ierusalem: put your trust in the Lord your God, and ye shalbe assured: beleeue his Prophets, and ye shall prosper. ²¹ And when he had consulted with the people, and appoynted singers vnto the Lord, and them that should prayse him that is in the beautifull Sanctuarie, in going forth before the men of armes, and saying, Prayse ye the Lord, for his mercy lasteth for euer, ²² And when they began to shoute, and to prayse, the Lord layed ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Iudah, and they slewe one another. ²³ For the children of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of mount Seir, to slay and to destroy them and when they had made an end of the inhabitantes of Seir, euery one helped to destroy another. ²⁴ And when Iudah came towarde Mizpah in the wildernes, they looked vnto the multitude: and behold, the carkeises were fallen to the earth, and none escaped. ²⁵ And when Iehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoyle of them, they founde among them in abundance both of substance and also of bodies laden with precious iewels, which they tooke for themselues, till they could cary no more: they were three dayes in gathering of the spoyle: for it was much. ²⁶ And in the fourth day they assembled themselues in the valley of Berachah: for there they blessed the Lord: therefore they called the name of that place, The valley of Berachah vnto this day. ²⁷ Then euery man of Iudah and Ierusalem returned with Iehoshaphat their head, to goe againe to Ierusalem with ioy: for the Lord had made them to reioyce ouer their enemies. ²⁸ And they came to Ierusalem with viols and with harpes, and with trumpets, euen vnto the house of the Lord. ²⁹ And the feare of God was vpon all the kingdomes of the earth, whe they had heard that the Lord had fought against ye enemies of Israel. ³⁰ So the kingdom of Iehoshaphat was quiet, and his God gaue him rest on euery side.

²¹ And the Lord sent an Angel which destroyed all the valiant men, and the princes and captaines of the hoste of the King of Asshur: so he returned with shame to his owne lande. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came foorth of his owne bowels, slewe him there with the sworde.

¹ To him that excelleth. A Psalme to give instruction, committed to the sonnes of Korah. We haue heard with our eares, O God: our fathers haue tolde vs the workes, that thou hast done in their dayes, in the olde time: ² Howe thou hast driuen out the heathen with thine hand, and planted them: how thou hast destroyed the people, and caused them to grow. ³ For they inherited not the lande by their owne sworde, neither did their owne arme saue them: but thy right hand, and thine arme and the light of thy countenance, because thou didest fauour them. ⁴ Thou art my King, O God: send helpe vnto Iaakob.

⁸ Come, and behold the workes of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. ⁹ He maketh warres to cease vnto the endes of the world: he breaketh the bowe and cutteth the speare, and burneth the chariots with fire. ¹⁰ Be still and knowe that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, and I wil be exalted in the earth. ¹¹ The Lord of hostes is with vs: the God of Iaakob is our refuge. Selah.

⁴ For lo, the Kings were gathered, and went together. ⁵ When they sawe it, they marueiled: they were astonied, and suddenly driuen backe. ⁶ Feare came there vpon them, and sorowe, as vpon a woman in trauaile. ⁷ As with an East winde thou breakest the shippes of Tarshish, so were they destroyed. ⁸ As we haue heard, so haue we seene in the citie of the Lord of hostes, in the Citie of our God: God will stablish it for euer. Selah.

⁵ Remember his marueilous woorkes, that he hath done, his wonders and the iudgements of his mouth, ⁶ Ye seede of Abraham his seruant, ye children of Iaakob, which are his elect. ⁷ He is the Lord our God: his iudgements are through all the earth. ⁸ He hath alway remembred his couenant and promise, that he made to a thousand generations, ⁹ Euen that which he made with Abraham, and his othe vnto Izhak: ¹⁰ And since hath confirmed it to Iaakob for a lawe, and to Israel for an euerlasting couenant, ¹¹ Saying, Vnto thee will I giue the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance. ¹² Albeit they were fewe in nomber, yea, very fewe, and strangers in the land, ¹³ And walked about from nation to nation, from one kingdome to another people, ¹⁴ Yet suffered he no man to doe them wrong, but reprooued Kings for their sakes, saying, ¹⁵ Touche not mine anointed, and doe my Prophets no harme. ¹⁶ Moreouer, he called a famine vpon ye land, and vtterly brake the staffe of bread. ¹⁷ But he sent a man before them: Ioseph was solde for a slaue. ¹⁸ They helde his feete in the stockes, and he was laide in yrons, ¹⁹ Vntill his appointed time came, and the counsell of the Lord had tryed him. ²⁰ The King sent and loosed him: euen the Ruler of the people deliuered him. ²¹ He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance, ²² That he shoulde binde his princes vnto his will, and teach his Ancients wisedome. ²³ Then Israel came to Egypt, and Iaakob was a stranger in the land of Ham. ²⁴ And he increased his people exceedingly, and made them stronger then their oppressours. ²⁵ He turned their heart to hate his people, and to deale craftily with his seruants. ²⁶ Then sent he Moses his seruant, and Aaron whom he had chosen. ²⁷ They shewed among them the message of his signes, and wonders in the land of Ham. ²⁸ He sent darkenesse, and made it darke: and they were not disobedient vnto his commission. ²⁹ He turned their waters into blood, and slewe their fish. ³⁰ Their land brought foorth frogs, euen in their Kings chambers. ³¹ He spake, and there came swarmes of flies and lice in all their quarters. ³² He gaue them haile for raine, and flames of fire in their land. ³³ He smote their vines also and their figge trees, and brake downe the trees in their coastes. ³⁴ He spake, and the grashoppers came, and caterpillers innumerable, ³⁵ And did eate vp all the grasse in their land, and deuoured the fruite of their ground. ³⁶ He smote also all the first borne in their land, euen the beginning of all their strength. ³⁷ He brought them forth also with siluer and golde, and there was none feeble among their tribes. ³⁸ Egypt was glad at their departing: for the feare of them had fallen vpon them. ³⁹ He spred a cloude to be a couering, and fire to giue light in the night. ⁴⁰ They asked, and he brought quailes, and he filled them with the bread of heauen. ⁴¹ He opened the rocke, and the waters flowed out, and ranne in the drye places like a riuer. ⁴² For he remembred his holy promise to Abraham his seruant, ⁴³ And he brought forth his people with ioy, and his chosen with gladnesse, ⁴⁴ And gaue them the lands of the heathen, and they tooke the labours of the people in possession, ⁴⁵ That they might keepe his statutes, and obserue his Lawes. ¹ Praise ye the Lord, because he is good: for his mercie endureth for euer. ² Praise ye the God of gods: for his mercie endureth for euer. ³ Praise ye the Lord of lordes: for his mercie endureth for euer: ⁴ Which onely doeth great wonders: for his mercie endureth for euer: ⁵ Which by his wisedome made the heauens: for his mercie endureth for euer: ⁶ Which hath stretched out the earth vpon the waters: for his mercie endureth for euer: ⁷ Which made great lightes: for his mercie endureth for euer: ⁸ As the sunne to rule the day: for his mercie endureth for euer: ⁹ The moone and the starres to gouerne the night: for his mercie endureth for euer: ¹⁰ Which smote Egypt with their first borne, (for his mercie endureth for euer) ¹¹ And brought out Israel from among them (for his mercie endureth for euer) ¹² With a mightie hande and stretched out arme: for his mercie endureth for euer: ¹³ Which deuided the red Sea in two partes: for his mercie endureth for euer: ¹⁴ And made Israel to passe through the mids of it: for his mercie endureth for euer: ¹⁵ And ouerthrewe Pharaoh and his hoste in the red Sea: for his mercie endureth for euer: ¹⁶ Which led his people through the wildernes: for his mercie endureth for euer: ¹⁷ Which smote great Kings: for his mercie endureth for euer: ¹⁸ And slewe mightie Kings: for his mercie endureth for euer: ¹⁹ As Sihon King of the Amorites: for his mercie endureth for euer: ²⁰ And Og the King of Bashan: for his mercie endureth for euer: ²¹ And gaue their land for an heritage: for his mercie endureth for euer: ²² Euen an heritage vnto Israel his seruant: for his mercie endureth for euer: ²³ Which remembred vs in our base estate: for his mercie endureth for euer: ²⁴ And hath rescued vs from our oppressours: for his mercie endureth for euer: ²⁵ Which giueth foode to all flesh: for his mercie endureth for euer. ²⁶ Praise ye the God of heauen: for his mercie endureth for euer.

¹ Beholde, the Lordes hande is not shortened, that it can not saue: neither is his eare heauie, that it cannot heare. ² But your iniquities haue separated betweene you and your God, and your sinnes haue hidde his face from you, that he will not heare.

¹⁷ Ah Lord God, beholde, thou hast made the heauen and the earth by thy great power, and by thy stretched out arme, and there is nothing hard vnto thee.

²⁴ Beholde, the mounts, they are come into the citie to take it, and the citie is giuen into the hande of the Caldeans, that fight against it by meanes of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence, and what thou hast spoken, is come to passe, and beholde, thou seest it.

³ And Zedekiah the King sent Iehucal the sonne of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the sonne of Maaseiah the Priest to the Prophet Ieremiah, saying, Pray now vnto the Lord our God for vs.

⁷ Thus sayth the Lord God of Israel, Thus shall ye say to the King of Iudah, that sent you vnto me to inquire of me, Behold, Pharaohs hoste, which is come forth to helpe you, shall returne to Egypt into their owne land.

¹⁴ Then Zedekiah the King sent, and tooke Ieremiah the Prophet vnto him, into the thirde entrie that is in the House of the Lord, and the King sayd vnto Ieremiah, I wil aske thee a thing: hide nothing from me. ¹⁵ Then Ieremiah sayd to Zedekiah, If I declare it vnto thee, wilt not thou slay me? and if I giue thee counsell, thou wilt not heare me. ¹⁶ So the King sware secretly vnto Ieremiah, saying, As the Lord liueth that made vs these soules, I will not slay thee, nor giue thee into the hands of those men that seeke thy life. ¹⁷ Then sayd Ieremiah vnto Zedekiah, Thus sayth the Lord God of hostes, the God of Israel, If thou wilt goe foorth vnto the King of Babels princes, then thy soule shall liue, and this citie shall not be burnt vp with fire, and thou shalt liue, and thine house. ¹⁸ But if thou wilt not go forth to the King of Babels princes, then shall this citie be giuen into the hand of ye Caldeans, and they shall burne it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hands. ¹⁹ And Zedekiah the King sayde vnto Ieremiah, I am carefull for the Iewes that are fled vnto the Caldeans, least they deliuer mee into their hands, and they mocke me. ²⁰ But Ieremiah sayd, They shall not deliuer thee: hearken vnto the voyce of the Lord, I beseech thee, which I speake vnto thee: so shall it be well vnto thee, and thy soule shall liue. ²¹ But if thou wilt refuse to go forth, this is the worde that the Lord hath shewed me. ²² And beholde, all the women that are left in the King of Iudahs house, shalbe brought forth to the King of Babels princes: and those women shall say, Thy friends haue perswaded thee, and haue preuailed against thee: thy feete are fastened in the myre, and they are turned backe. ²³ So they shall bring out all thy wiues, and thy children to the Caldeans, and thou shalt not escape out of their hands, but shalt be taken by the hand of the King of Babel: and this citie shalt thou cause to be burnt with fire. ²⁴ Then said Zedekiah vnto Ieremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die. ²⁵ But if ye princes vnderstand that I haue talked with thee, and they come vnto thee, and say vnto thee, Declare vnto vs nowe, what thou hast sayde vnto the King, hide it not from vs, and we will not slay thee: also what the King sayd vnto thee, ²⁶ Then shalt thou say vnto them, I humbly besought the King that he would not cause me to returne to Iehonathans house, to die there. ²⁷ Then came all the princes vnto Ieremiah and asked him. And he tolde them according to all these wordes that the King had commanded: so they left off speaking with him, for the matter was not perceiued.

¹ In the ninth yeere of Zedekiah King of Iudah in the tenth moneth, came Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel and all his hoste against Ierusalem, and they besieged it. ² And in the eleuenth yeere of Zedekiah in the fourth moneth, the ninth day of the moneth, the citie was broken vp.

⁴ Then Ieremiah the Prophet said vnto them, I haue heard you: behold, I will pray vnto ye Lord your God according to your wordes, and whatsoeuer thing the Lord shall answere you, I will declare it vnto you: I will keepe nothing backe from you. ⁵ Then they said to Ieremiah, The Lord be a witnesse of trueth, and faith betweene vs, if we doe not, euen according to all things for ye which the Lord thy God shall send thee to vs. ⁶ Whether it be good or euill, we will obey the voyce of the Lord God, to whom we sende thee that it may be well with vs, when wee obey the voyce of the Lord our God.

³ Doubtlesse because the wrath of the Lord was against Ierusalem and Iudah, till he had cast them out from his presence, therefore Zedekiah rebelled against the King of Babel. ⁴ But in the ninth yeere of his reigne, in the tenth moneth the tenth day of the moneth came Nebuchad-nezzar King of Babel, he and all his hoste against Ierusalem, and pitched against it, and buylt fortes against it round about. ⁵ So the citie was besieged vnto the eleuenth yeere of the King Zedekiah. ⁶ Now in the fourth moneth, the ninth day of the moneth, the famine was sore in ye citie, so that there was no more bread for ye people of the land.

³ Sonne of man, these men haue set vp their idoles in their heart, and put the stumbling blocke of their iniquitie before their face: should I, being required, answere them? ⁴ Therefore speake vnto them, and say vnto them, Thus saith the Lord God, Euery man of the house of Israel that setteth vp his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumbling blocke of his iniquitie before his face, and commeth to the Prophet, I the Lord will answere him that commeth, according to the multitude of his idoles: ⁵ That I may take the house of Israel in their owne heart, because they are all departed from me through their idoles. ⁶ Therfore say vnto the house of Israel, Thus sayth the Lord God, Returne, and withdraw your selues, and turne your faces from your idoles, and turne your faces from all your abominations. ⁷ For euery one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that soiourneth in Israel, which departeth from mee, and setteth vp his idoles in his heart, and putteth the stumbling blocke of his iniquitie before his face, and commeth to a Prophet, for to inquire of him for me, I the Lord will answere him for my selfe,

¹ And in the seuenth yeere, in the fift moneth, the tenth day of the moneth, came certaine of the elders of Israel to enquire of the Lord, and sate before me. ² Then came the worde of the Lord vnto me, saying, ³ Sonne of man, speake vnto the Elders of Israel, and say vnto them, Thus saith the Lord God, Are ye come to enquire of me? as I liue, sayth the Lord God, when I am asked, I wil not answer you.
