⁵ The people shalbe oppressed one of another, and euery one by his neighbour: the children shall presume against the ancient, and the vile against the honourable.

³² Thou shalt rise vp before the horehead, and honour the person of the old man, and dread thy God: I am the Lord.

⁵ And when king Dauid came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the familie of the house of Saul, named Shimei the sonne of Gera: and he came out, and cursed. ⁶ And he cast stones at Dauid, and at all the seruants of King Dauid: and all the people, and all the men of warre were on his right hande, and on his left. ⁷ And thus sayde Shimei when hee cursed, Come forth, come foorth thou murtherer, and wicked man. ⁸ The Lord hath brought vpon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned: and the Lord hath deliuered thy kingdome into the hand of Absalom thy sonne: and beholde, thou art taken in thy wickednesse, because thou art a murtherer. ⁹ Then saide Abishai the sonne of Zeruiah vnto the King, Why doeth this dead dog curse my lord the King? let me goe, I pray thee, and take away his head.

²³ And he went vp from thence vnto Beth-el. And as he was going vp the way, litle children came out of the citie, and mocked him, and saide vnto him, Come vp, thou balde head, come vp, thou balde head.

¹ Bvt now they that are yonger then I, mocke me: yea, they whose fathers I haue refused to set with the dogges of my flockes. ² For whereto shoulde the strength of their handes haue serued mee, seeing age perished in them? ³ For pouertie and famine they were solitary, fleeing into the wildernes, which is darke, desolate and waste. ⁴ They cut vp nettels by the bushes, and the iuniper rootes was their meate. ⁵ They were chased forth from among men: they shouted at them, as at a theefe. ⁶ Therfore they dwelt in the clefts of riuers, in the holes of the earth and rockes. ⁷ They roared among the bushes, and vnder the thistles they gathered themselues. ⁸ They were the children of fooles and the children of villaines, which were more vile then the earth. ⁹ And now am I their song, and I am their talke. ¹⁰ They abhorre me, and flee farre from mee, and spare not to spit in my face. ¹¹ Because that God hath loosed my corde and humbled mee, they haue loosed the bridle before me. ¹² The youth rise vp at my right hand: they haue pusht my feete, and haue trode on me as on the paths of their destruction.

⁵ There is an euil that I haue seene vnder the sunne, as an errour that proceedeth from the face of him that ruleth. ⁶ Follie is set in great excellencie, and the riche set in the lowe place. ⁷ I haue seene seruants on horses, and princes walking as seruants on the ground.

⁴ Ah, sinfull nation, a people laden with iniquitie: a seede of the wicked, corrupt children: they haue forsaken the Lord: they haue prouoked the holy one of Israel to anger: they are gone backewarde.

¹⁹ By the wrath of the Lord of hostes shall the land be darkened, and the people shall be as the meate of ye fire: no man shall spare his brother. ²⁰ And he shall snatch at the right hand, and be hungrie: and he shall eate on the left hand, and shall not be satisfied: euery one shall eate ye flesh of his owne arme. ²¹ Manasseh, Ephraim: and Ephraim Manasseh, and they both shall be against Iudah yet for all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

¹³ The hatred also of Ephraim shall depart, and the aduersaries of Iudah shalbe cut off: Ephraim shall not enuie Iudah, neither shall Iudah vexe Ephraim:

³ And they bende their tongues like their bowes for lyes: but they haue no courage for the trueth vpon the earth: for they proceede from euill to worse, and they haue not knowen mee, sayth the Lord. ⁴ Let euery one take heede of his neighbour, and trust you not in any brother: for euery brother will vse deceite, and euery friend will deale deceitfully, ⁵ And euery one wil deceiue his friende, and wil not speake the trueth: for they haue taught their tongues to speake lies, and take great paynes to do wickedly. ⁶ Thine habitation is in the middes of deceiuers: because of their deceit they refuse to know me, sayth the Lord. ⁷ Therefore thus sayth the Lord of hostes, Behold, I wil melt them, and trie them: for what should I els do for the daughter of my people? ⁸ Their tongue is as an arow shot out, and speaketh deceite: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in his heart hee layeth waite for him.

¹⁷ But thine eyes and thine heart are but only for thy couetousnesse, and for to sheade innocent blood, and for oppression, and for destruction, euen to doe this.

⁶ Beholde, the princes of Israel euery one in thee was ready to his power, to shed blood. ⁷ In thee haue they despised father and mother: in the middes of thee haue they oppressed the stranger: in thee haue they vexed the fatherlesse and the widowe.

¹² In thee haue they taken giftes to shed blood: thou hast taken vsurie and the encrease, and thou hast defrauded thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord God.

¹ Heare this worde, ye kine of Bashan that are in the mountaine of Samaria, which oppresse the poore, and destroy the needie, and they say to their masters, Bring, and let vs drinke.

¹ And I sayd, Heare, I pray you, O heads of Iaakob, and yee princes of the house of Israel: should not ye knowe iudgement? ² But they hate the good, and loue the euill: they plucke off their skinnes from them, and their flesh from their bones. ³ And they eate also the flesh of my people, and flay off their skinne from them, and they breake their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

¹¹ The heads thereof iudge for rewardes, and the Priestes thereof teache for hyre, and the prophets thereof prophecie for money: yet wil they leane vpon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among vs? no euill can come vpon vs.

³ To make good for the euil of their hands, the prince asked, and the iudge iudgeth for a reward: therefore the great man he speaketh out the corruption of his soule: so they wrapt it vp. ⁴ The best of them is as a brier, and the most righteous of them is sharper then a thorne hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation commeth: then shalbe their confusion. ⁵ Trust ye not in a friend, neither put ye confidence in a counseller: keepe the doores of thy mouth from her that lyeth in thy bosome. ⁶ For the sonne reuileth the father: ye daughter riseth vp against her mother: the daughter in lawe against her mother in lawe, and a mans enemies are the men of his owne house.

⁹ Thus speaketh the Lord of hostes, saying, Execute true iudgement, and shewe mercy and compassion, euery man to his brother, ¹⁰ And oppresse not the widowe, nor the fatherles, the stranger nor the poore, and let none of you imagine euil against his brother in your heart. ¹¹ But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their eares, that they should not heare.

⁵ And I will come neere to you to iudgement, and I will be a swift witnesse against the southsayers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that wrongfully keepe backe the hirelings wages, and vexe the widowe, and the fatherlesse, and oppresse the stranger, and feare not me, sayth the Lord of hostes.

⁶⁷ Then spet they in his face, and buffeted him, and other smote him with roddes,

²⁸ And they stripped him, and put about him a skarlet robe, ²⁹ And platted a crowne of thornes, and put it vpon his head, and a reede in his right hand, and bowed their knees before him, and mocked him, saying, God saue thee King of the Iewes, ³⁰ And spitted vpon him, and tooke a reede, and smote him on the head.

⁶⁵ And some began to spit at him, and to couer his face, and to beate him with fists, and to say vnto him, Prophesie. And the sergeants smote him with their roddes.

⁶⁴ And when they had blindfolded him, they smote him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophecie who it is that smote thee.

⁶ But ye haue despised the poore. Doe not the riche oppresse you by tyrannie, and doe not they drawe you before the iudgement seates?

⁴ Behold, the hire of ye labourers, which haue reaped your fieldes (which is of you kept backe by fraude) cryeth, and the cryes of them which haue reaped, are entred into the eares of the Lord of hostes.
