⁵⁰ And Adonijah fearing the presence of Salomon, arose and went, and tooke holde on the hornes of the altar. ⁵¹ And one tolde Salomon, saying, Beholde, Adonijah doeth feare King Salomon: for lo, he hath caught holde on the hornes of the altar, saying, Let King Salomon sweare vnto me this day, that he will not slay his seruant with the sword. ⁵² Then Salomon sayd, If he will shewe him selfe a worthy man, there shall not an heare of him fall to the earth, but if wickednes be found in him, he shall dye.

²¹ She sayd then, Let Abishag the Shunammite be giuen to Adonijah thy brother to wife. ²² But King Salomon answered and sayd vnto his mother, And why doest thou aske Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? aske for him the kingdome also: for he is mine elder brother, and hath for him both Abiathar the Priest, and Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah. ²³ Then King Salomon sware by the Lord, saying, God doe so to me and more also, if Adoniiah hath not spoken this worde against his owne life. ²⁴ Now therefore as ye Lord liueth, who hath established me, and set me on the throne of Dauid my father, who also hath made me an house, as he promised, Adoniiah shall surely die this day.

²⁹ He that is slowe to wrath, is of great wisdome: but he that is of an hastie minde, exalteth follie.

¹⁴ The wrath of a King is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacifie it. ¹⁵ In the light of the Kings coutenance is life: and his fauour is as a cloude of the latter raine.

³¹ A lusty grayhound, and a goate, and a King against whom there is no rising vp.

⁴ If the spirite of him that ruleth, rise vp against thee, leaue not thy place: for gentlenes pacifieth great sinnes.

⁴ Because I knewe, that thou art obstinate, and thy necke is an yron sinew, and thy brow brasse,

¹⁶ The worde that thou hast spoken vnto vs in the Name of the Lord, wee will not heare it of thee, ¹⁷ But wee will doe whatsoeuer thing goeth out of our owne mouth, as to burne incense vnto the Queene of heauen, and to powre out drinke offerings vnto her, as we haue done, both we and our fathers, our Kings and our princes in the cities of Iudah, and in the streetes of Ierusalem: for then had wee plentie of vitailes and were well and felt none euill.
