¹ After this, the King of the children of Ammon dyed, and Hanun his sonne reigned in his steade. ² Then sayde Dauid, I will shewe kindnesse vnto Hanun the sonne of Nahash, as his father shewed kindnesse vnto me. And Dauid sent his seruantes to comfort him for his father. So Dauids seruants came into the lande of the children of Ammon.

²⁶ Then Ioab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and tooke the citie of the kingdome.

²⁸ Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and besiege the city, that thou mayest take it, lest the victorie be attributed to me. ²⁹ So Dauid gathered al the people together, and went against Rabbah, and besieged it, and tooke it. ³⁰ And he tooke their Kings crowne from his head, (which weighed a talent of golde, with precious stones) and it was set on Dauids head: and he brought away the spoyle of the citie in exceeding great abundance.

¹² Also Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite Dauids counseller, from his citie Giloh, while he offred sacrifices: and the treason was great: for the people encreased still with Absalom.

¹⁴ Then Dauid sayd vnto all his seruants that were with him at Ierusalem, Vp, and let vs flee: for we shall not escape from Absalom: make speede to depart, lest he come suddenly and take vs, and bring euill vpon vs, and smite the citie with the edge of the sworde.

¹⁸ And all his seruants went about him, and all the Cherethites and all the Pelethites and all the Gittites, euen sixe hudreth men which were come after him from Gath, went before the King.

²⁷ The King sayde againe vnto Zadok the Priest, Art not thou a Seer? returne into the citie in peace, and your two sonnes with you: to wit, Ahimaaz thy sonne, and Ionathan the sonne of Abiathar. ²⁸ Behold, I wil tarie in the fieldes of the wildernesse, vntill there come some worde from you to be tolde me.

³¹ Then one tolde Dauid, saying, Ahithophel is one of them that haue cospired with Absalom: and Dauid sayde, O Lord, I pray thee, turne the counsell of Ahithophel into foolishnesse. ³² Then Dauid came to the toppe of the mount where he worshipped God: and beholde, Hushai the Archite came against him with his coate torne, and hauing earth vpon his head. ³³ Vnto whom Dauid sayd, If thou goe with me, thou shalt be a burthen vnto me. ³⁴ But if thou returne to the citie, and say vnto Absalom, I wil be thy seruant, O King, (as I haue bene in time past thy fathers seruant, so will I now be thy seruant) then thou mayest bring me the counsell of Ahithophel to nought.

And Ziba said, They be asses for the kings housholde to ride on, and bread and dryed figges for the yong men to eate, and wine, that the faint may drinke in the wildernesse.

⁵ And when king Dauid came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the familie of the house of Saul, named Shimei the sonne of Gera: and he came out, and cursed.

¹⁴ Then came the King and all the people that were with him wearie, and refreshed them selues there.

¹⁶ And when Hushai the Archite Dauids friend was come vnto Absalom, Hushai said vnto Absalom, God saue the King, God saue the King. ¹⁷ Then Absalom sayd to Hushai, Is this thy kindenes to thy friend? Why wentest thou not with thy friend? ¹⁸ Hushai then answered vnto Absalom, Nay, but whome the Lord, and this people, and all the men of Israel chuse, his will I be, and with him will I dwell. ¹⁹ And moreouer vnto whome shall I doe seruice? not to his sonne? as I serued before thy father, so will I before thee.

²³ And the counsell of Ahithophel which he counseled in those dayes, was like as one had asked counsell at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with Dauid and with Absalom.

² And I will come vpon him: for he is wearie, and weake handed: so I will feare him, and all the people that are with him, shall flee, and I will smite the King onely,

²¹ And assoone as they were departed, the other came out of the well, and went and tolde King Dauid, and sayde vnto him, Vp, and get you quickely ouer the water: for such counsell hath Ahithophel giuen against you. ²² Then Dauid arose, and all the people that were with him, and they went ouer Iorden vntil the dawning of the day, so that there lacked not one of them, that was not come ouer Iorden.

¹³ Also say ye to Amasa, Art thou not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if thou be not captaine of the hoste to me for euer in the roume of Ioab.

³¹ Then Barzillai the Gileadite came downe from Rogelim, and went ouer Iorden with the king, to conduct him ouer Iorden. ³² Nowe Barzillai was a very aged man, euen fourescore yeere olde, and he had prouided the king of sustenance, while he lay at Mahanaim: for he was a man of very great substance. ³³ And the king said vnto Barzillai, Come ouer with me, and I will feede thee with me in Ierusalem. ³⁴ And Barzillai said vnto the king, Howe long haue I to liue, that I should goe vp with the king to Ierusalem? ³⁵ I am this day fourescore yeere olde: and can I discerne betweene good or euill? Hath thy seruant any taste in that I eat or in that I drinke? Can I heare any more the voyce of singing men and women? wherefore then should thy seruant be anymore a burthen vnto my lord the king? ³⁶ Thy seruant will goe a litle way ouer Iorden with the King, and why wil the king recompence it me with such a rewarde? ³⁷ I pray thee, let thy seruant turne backe againe, that I may die in mine owne citie, and be buryed in the graue of my father and of my mother: but beholde thy seruant Chimham, let him goe with my lorde the king, and doe to him what shall please thee. ³⁸ And the king answered, Chimham shall go with me, and I will do to him that thou shalt be content with: and whatsoeuer thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee. ³⁹ So all the people went ouer Iorden: and the King passed ouer: and the King kissed Barzillai, and blessed him, and hee returned vnto his owne place.

⁴ Then sayde the King to Amasa, Assemble me the men of Iudah within three dayes, and be thou here present.

⁹ And Ioab sayde to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? and Ioab tooke Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kisse him. ¹⁰ But Amasa tooke no heede to the sworde that was in Ioabs hande: for therewith he smote him in the fift rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and smote him not the second time: so he dyed. then Ioab and Abishai his brother followed after Sheba the sonne of Bichri. ¹¹ And one of Ioabs men stoode by him, and saide, He that fauoureth Ioab, and hee that is of Dauids part, let him go after Ioab. ¹² And Amasa wallowed in blood in the mids of the way: and when the man sawe that all the people stood still, he remooued Amasa out of the way into the fielde, and cast a cloth vpon him, because he saw that euery one that came by him, stoode still.

¹⁹ I am one of them, that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: and thou goest about to destroy a citie, and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou deuoure the inheritance of the Lord? ²⁰ And Ioab answered, and said, God forbid, God forbid it me, that I should deuoure, or destroy it.

¹⁸ And after this also there was a battell with the Philistims at Gob, then Sibbechai the Hushathite slewe Saph, which was one of ye sonnes of Haraphah. ¹⁹ And there was yet another battel in Gob with the Philistims, where Elhanah the sonne of Iaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite slewe Goliath the Gittite: the staffe of whose speare was like a weauers beame. ²⁰ Afterward there was also a battel in Gath, where was a man of a great stature, and had on euerie hand sixe fingers, and on euerie foote sixe toes, foure and twentie in nomber: who was also the sonne of Haraphah. ²¹ And when hee reuiled Israel, Ionathan the sonne of Shima the brother of Dauid slewe him. ²² These foure were borne to Haraphah in Gath, and died by the hande of Dauid and by the hands of his seruants.

He that sate in the seate of wisedome, being chiefe of the princes, was Adino of Ezni, he slewe eight hundreth at one time. ⁹ And after him was Eleazar the sonne of Dodo, the sonne of Ahohi, one of the three worthies with Dauid, when they defied the Philistims gathered there to battel, when the men of Israel were gone vp.

⁹ Then Adoniiah sacrificed sheepe and oxen, and fat cattel by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren the kings sonnes, and al the men of Iudah ye Kings seruants,

⁵ Thou knowest also what Ioab the sonne of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captaines of the hostes of Israel, vnto Abner the sonne of Ner, and vnto Amasa the sonne of Iether: whome he slewe, and shed blood of battell in peace, and put the blood of warre vpon his girdle that was about his loynes, and in his shooes that were on his feete.

⁷ But shew kindnes vnto the sonnes of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among them that eate at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled from Absalom thy brother.

³² And the Lord shall bring his blood vpon his owne head: for he smote two men more righteous and better then he, and slew them with the sword, and my father Dauid knew not: to wit, Abner the sonne of Ner, captaine of the hoste of Israel, and Amasa the sonne of Iether captaine of the hoste of Iudah.

¹⁸ And when Zimri saw, that the citie was taken, he went into the palace of the Kings house, and burnt himselfe, and the Kings house with fire, and so dyed,

³¹ And the King of Aram commanded his two and thirtie captaines ouer his charets, saying, Fight neither with small, nor great, saue onely against the King of Israel.

²⁴ And he turned backe, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And two beares came out of the forest, and tare in pieces two and fourtie children of them.

²³ Now therefore giue hostages to my lord the King of Asshur, and I will giue thee two thousand horses, if thou be able to set riders vpon them.

And Dauid made him of his counsell. ²⁶ These also were valiant men of warre, Asahel the brother of Ioab, Elhanan the sonne of Dodo of Beth-lehem, ²⁷ Shammoth the Harodite, Helez the Pelonite, ²⁸ Ira the sonne of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Antothite, ²⁹ Sibbecai the Husathite, Ilai the Ahohite, ³⁰ Maharai the Netophathite, Heled ye sonne of Baanah the Netophathite, ³¹ Ithai the sonne of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Beniamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite, ³² Hurai of the riuers of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, ³³ Azmaueth the Baharumite, Elihaba the Shaalbonite, ³⁴ The sonnes of Hashem the Gizonite, Ionathan the sonne of Shageh the Harite, ³⁵ Ahiam the sonne of Sacar the Hararite, Eliphal the sonne of Vr, ³⁶ Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahiiah the Pelonite, ³⁷ Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai the sonne of Ezbai, ³⁸ Ioel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the sonne of Haggeri, ³⁹ Zelek the Ammonite, Nahrai the Berothite, the armour bearer of Ioab, the sonne of Zeruiah, ⁴⁰ Ira the Ithrite, Garib the Ithrite, ⁴¹ Vriah the Hittite, Zabad the sonne of Ahlai, ⁴² Adina the sonne of Shiza the Reubenite, a captaine of the Reubenites, and thirtie with him, ⁴³ Hanan the sonne of Maachah, and Ioshaphat the Mithnite, ⁴⁴ Vzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Ieiel the sonnes of Otham the Aroerite, ⁴⁵ Iediael the sonne of Shimri, and Ioha his brother the Tizite, ⁴⁶ Eliel the Mahauite, and Ieribai and Ioshauiah the sonnes of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite, ⁴⁷ Eliel and Obed, and Iaasiel the Mesobaite.

¹⁶ And as he talked with him, he said vnto him, Haue they made thee the Kings counseler? cease thou: why should they smite thee? And the Prophet ceased, but said, I knowe that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not obeyed my counsell.

²⁰ But Amaziah would not heare: for it was of God, that he might deliuer them into his had, because they had sought the gods of Edom.

⁴ And the thing pleased the King, and all the Congregation.

⁶¹ And of the sonnes of the Priestes, the sonnes of Habaiah, the sonnes of Coz, the sonnes of Barzillai: which tooke of the daughters of Barzillai the Giliadite to wife, and was called after their name.

²¹ And this saying pleased the King and the princes, and the King did according to the worde of Memucan.

¹⁴ Then sayde Zeresh his wife and all his friends vnto him, Let them make a tree of fiftie cubites hie, and to morowe speake thou vnto the King, that Mordecai may be hanged thereon: then shalt thou goe ioyfully with the King vnto the banket. And the thing pleased Haman, and he caused to make the tree.

¹² He scattereth the deuices of the craftie: so that their handes can not accomplish that which they doe enterprise. ¹³ He taketh the wise in their craftinesse, and the counsel of the wicked is made foolish. ¹⁴ They meete with darkenesse in the day time, and grope at noone day, as in the night.

³ Is not destruction to the wicked and strange punishment to the workers of iniquitie?

³ But thou Lord art a buckler for me: my glory, and the lifter vp of mine head. ⁴ I did call vnto the Lord with my voyce, and he heard me out of his holy mountaine. Selah. ⁵ I layed me downe and slept, and rose vp againe: for the Lord susteined me.

⁸ I will lay mee downe, and also sleepe in peace: for thou, Lord, onely makest me dwell in safetie.

¹⁰ Destroy them, O God: let them fall from their counsels: cast them out for the multitude of their iniquities, because they haue rebelled against thee.

¹⁵ Hee hath made a pitte and digged it, and is fallen into the pit that he made. ¹⁶ His mischiefe shall returne vpon his owne head, and his crueltie shall fall vpon his owne pate.

¹⁶ The Lord is knowen by executing iudgement: the wicked is snared in the worke of his owne handes. Higgaion. Selah.

⁹ For he spake, and it was done: he commanded, and it stood. ¹⁰ The Lord breaketh the counsell of the heathen, and bringeth to nought the deuices of the people.

⁸ Taste ye and see, howe gratious the Lord is: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. ⁹ Feare the Lord, ye his Saintes: for nothing wanteth to them that feare him. ¹⁰ The lyons doe lacke and suffer hunger, but they, which seeke the Lord, shall want nothing that is good.

²⁵ Let them not say in their hearts, O our soule reioyce: neither let them say, We haue deuoured him.

⁸ Hee would make haste for my deliuerance from the stormie winde and tempest.

²³ And thou, O God, shalt bring them downe into the pitte of corruption: the bloudie, and deceitfull men shall not liue halfe their dayes: but I will trust in thee.

³ He will send from heauen, and saue me from the reproofe of him that would swallowe me. Selah. God wil send his mercy, and his trueth.

¹¹ For the Lord God is the sunne and shielde vnto vs: the Lord will giue grace and glory, and no good thing will he withhold from them that walke vprightly.

² For the mouth of the wicked, and the mouth full of deceite are opened vpon me: they haue spoken to me with a lying tongue. ³ They compassed me about also with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause. ⁴ For my friendship they were mine aduersaries, but I gaue my selfe to praier.

¹⁶ For their feete runne to euill, and make haste to shed blood.

¹⁶ For they can not sleepe, except they haue done euill, and their sleepe departeth except they cause some to fall.

⁴ Giue no sleepe to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. ⁵ Deliuer thy selfe as a doe from the hande of the hunter, and as a birde from the hande of the fouler.

¹⁸ Pride goeth before destruction, and an high minde before the fall.

¹² It is better for a man to meete a beare robbed of her whelpes, then a foole in his follie.

³ The foolishnesse of a man peruerteth his way, and his heart freateth against the Lord.

²¹ Many deuises are in a mans heart: but the counsell of the Lord shall stand.

³⁰ There is no wisedome, neither vnderstanding, nor counsell against the Lord.

¹² A prudent man seeth the plague, and hideth himselfe: but the foolish goe on still, and are punished.

¹ The wicked flee when none pursueth: but the righteous are bolde as a lyon.

¹⁵ As a roaring lyon, and an hungry beare, so is a wicked ruler ouer the poore people.

⁸ Open thy mouth for the domme in the cause of all the children of destruction.

¹ Cast thy bread vpon the waters: for after many daies thou shalt finde it. ² Giue a portion to seuen, and also to eight: for thou knowest not what euill shalbe vpon ye earth.

⁷ Beholde his bed, which is Salomons: threescore strong men are round about it, of the valiant men of Israel.

¹⁰ Take counsell together, yet it shall be brought to nought: pronounce a decree, yet shall it not stand: for God is with vs.

¹³ Because he said, By ye power of mine owne hand haue I done it, and by my wisdome, because I am wise: therefore I haue remooued the borders of the people, and haue spoyled their treasures, and haue pulled downe the inhabitants like a valiant man. ¹⁴ And mine hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people, and as one gathereth egges that are left, so haue I gathered all the earth: and there was none to mooue the wing or to open the mouth, or to whisper.

⁷ Therefore shall all hands be weakened, and all mens hearts shall melt,

⁸ But the liberall man will deuise of liberall things, and he will continue his liberalitie.

²² There is no peace, sayeth the Lord, vnto the wicked.

⁷ Is it not to deale thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poore that wander, vnto thine house? when thou seest the naked, that thou couer him, and hide not thy selfe from thine owne flesh?

⁷ Their feete runne to euill, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are wicked thoughts: desolation and destruction is in their paths. ⁸ The way of peace they knowe not, and there is none equitie in their goings: they haue made them crooked paths: whosoeuer goeth therein, shall not knowe peace.

³⁷ Who is he then that sayth, and it commeth to passe, and the Lord commandeth it not?

⁵ And beholde, another beast which was the second, was like a beare and stood vpon the one side: and hee had three ribbes in his mouth betweene his teeth, and they saide thus vnto him, Arise and deuoure much flesh.

⁸ I will meete them, as a beare that is robbed of her whelpes, and I will breake the kall of their heart, and there will I deuoure them like a lion: the wilde beast shall teare them.

³ And though they hide them selues in the toppe of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence: and though they be hid from my sight in the bottome of the sea, thence will I commande the serpent, and he shall bite them.

³ The pride of thine heart hath deceiued thee: thou that dwellest in the cleftes of the rockes, whose habitation is hie, that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me downe to the ground?

⁶ Therefore I wil make Samaria as an heape of the fielde, and for the planting of a vineyard, and I will cause the stones thereof to tumble downe into the valley, and I will discouer the foundations thereof.

⁷ Arise, O sword, vpon my shepheard, and vpon the man, that is my fellow, sayth the Lord of hostes: smite the shepheard, and the sheepe shall be scattered: and I will turne mine hand vpon the litle ones.

¹⁶ Behold, I send you as sheepe in the middes of the wolues: be yee therefore wise as serpents, and innocent as doues.

³⁸ But when the husbandmen saw the sonne, they saide among themselues, This is the heire: come, let vs kill him, and let vs take his inheritance.

² And Iesus sayd vnto them, See ye not all these things? Verely I say vnto you, there shall not be here left a stone vpon a stone, that shall not be cast downe.

¹⁶ Then let them which be in Iudea, flee into the mountaines. ¹⁷ Let him which is on the house top, not come downe to fetch any thing out of his house. ¹⁸ And he that is in the fielde, let not him returne backe to fetch his clothes.

³¹ Then saide Iesus vnto them, All yee shall be offended by me this night: for it is written, I wil smite the shepheard, and the sheepe of the flocke shalbe scattered.

⁵ And when hee had cast downe the siluer pieces in the Temple, hee departed, and went, and hanged himselfe.

¹³ Distributing vnto the necessities of the Saintes: giuing your selues to hospitalitie.

¹⁹ For it is written, I will destroy the wisedome of the wise, and will cast away the vnderstanding of the prudent. ²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the Scribe? where is the disputer of this worlde? hath not God made the wisedome of this worlde foolishnesse?

⁵⁴ So when this corruptible hath put on incorruption, and this mortall hath put on immortalitie, then shalbe brought to passe the saying that is written, Death is swallowed vp into victorie.

⁴ For in deede we that are in this tabernacle, sigh and are burdened, because we would not be vnclothed, but would be clothed vpon, that mortalitie might be swalowed vp of life.
