²³ And he went vp from thence vnto Beth-el. And as he was going vp the way, litle children came out of the citie, and mocked him, and saide vnto him, Come vp, thou balde head, come vp, thou balde head.

⁹ And Sarah sawe the sonne of Hagar the Egyptian (which she had borne vnto Abraham) mocking.

²⁸ Whereupon the King tooke counsell, and made two calues of golde, and saide vnto them, It is too much for you to goe vp to Ierusalem: beholde, O Israel, thy gods, which brought thee vp out of the lande of Egypt. ²⁹ And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other set he in Dan. ³⁰ And this thing turned to sinne: for the people went (because of the one) euen to Dan. ³¹ Also he made an house of hie places, and made Priestes of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sonnes of Leui. ³² And Ieroboam made a feast the fifteenth day of the eight moneth, like vnto the feast that is in Iudah, and offred on the altar. So did he in Beth-el and offered vnto the calues that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the Priestes of the hie places, which he had made.

¹¹ And as they went walking and talking, beholde, there appeared a charet of fire, and horses of fire, and did separate them twaine. So Eliiah went vp by a whirle winde into heauen.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his wordes, and misused his Prophets, vntill the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, and till there was no remedie.

¹⁸ The wicked also despised mee, and when I rose, they spake against me.

¹ Bvt now they that are yonger then I, mocke me: yea, they whose fathers I haue refused to set with the dogges of my flockes.

⁸ They were the children of fooles and the children of villaines, which were more vile then the earth. ⁹ And now am I their song, and I am their talke. ¹⁰ They abhorre me, and flee farre from mee, and spare not to spit in my face. ¹¹ Because that God hath loosed my corde and humbled mee, they haue loosed the bridle before me. ¹² The youth rise vp at my right hand: they haue pusht my feete, and haue trode on me as on the paths of their destruction. ¹³ They haue destroyed my paths: they tooke pleasure at my calamitie, they had none helpe. ¹⁴ They came as a great breach of waters, and vnder this calamitie they come on heapes. ¹⁵ Feare is turned vpon mee: and they pursue my soule as the winde, and mine health passeth away as a cloude. ¹⁶ Therefore my soule is nowe powred out vpon me, and the dayes of affliction haue taken holde on me. ¹⁷ It pearceth my bones in the night, and my sinewes take no rest. ¹⁸ For the great vehemencie is my garment changed, which compasseth me about as the colar of my coate. ¹⁹ He hath cast me into the myre, and I am become like ashes and dust. ²⁰ Whe I cry vnto thee, thou doest not heare me, neither regardest me, when I stand vp. ²¹ Thou turnest thy selfe cruelly against me, and art enemie vnto mee with the strength of thine hand. ²² Thou takest me vp and causest mee to ride vpon the winde, and makest my strength to faile. ²³ Surely I knowe that thou wilt bring mee to death, and to the house appoynted for all the liuing. ²⁴ Doubtles none can stretch his hand vnto the graue, though they cry in his destruction. ²⁵ Did not I weepe with him that was in trouble? was not my soule in heauinesse for the poore? ²⁶ Yet when I looked for good, euill came vnto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkenesse. ²⁷ My bowels did boyle without rest: for the dayes of affliction are come vpon me. ²⁸ I went mourning without sunne: I stood vp in the congregation and cryed. ²⁹ I am a brother to the dragons, and a companion to the ostriches. ³⁰ My skinne is blacke vpon me, and my bones are burnt with heate. ³¹ Therefore mine harpe is turned to mourning, and mine organs into the voyce of them that weepe.

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be made dumme, which cruelly, proudly and spitefully speake against the righteous.

¹⁵ But in mine aduersitie they reioyced, and gathered them selues together: the abiects assembled themselues against me, and knewe not: they tare me and ceased not,

¹¹ A childe also is knowen by his doings, whether his worke be pure and right.

⁶ Teache a childe in the trade of his way, and when he is olde, he shall not depart from it.

¹⁵ Foolishnesse is bounde in the heart of a childe: but the rodde of correction shall driue it away from him.

¹⁰ Therefore take away griefe out of thine heart, and cause euil to depart from thy flesh: for childehood and youth are vanitie.

⁴ Ah, sinfull nation, a people laden with iniquitie: a seede of the wicked, corrupt children: they haue forsaken the Lord: they haue prouoked the holy one of Israel to anger: they are gone backewarde.

⁵ The people shalbe oppressed one of another, and euery one by his neighbour: the children shall presume against the ancient, and the vile against the honourable.

³ But you witches children, come hither, the seede of the adulterer and of the whore. ⁴ On whome haue ye iested? vpon whome haue ye gaped and thrust out your tongue? are not ye rebellious children, and a false seede?

¹⁸ The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knede the dough to make cakes to the Queene of heauen and to powre out drinke offrings vnto other gods, that they may prouoke me vnto anger.

¹⁵ Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Iudah sinne: come not ye vnto Gilgal, neither goe ye vp to Beth-auen, nor sweare, The Lord liueth.

⁵ The inhabitants of Samaria shall feare because of the calfe of Beth-auen: for the people thereof shall mourne ouer it, and the Chemarims thereof, that reioyced on it for the glorie thereof, because it is departed from it.

¹⁵ So shall Beth-el doe vnto you, because of your malicious wickednes: in a morning shall the King of Israel be destroied.

¹⁴ Surely in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel vpon him, I wil also visite the altars of Beth-el, and the hornes of the altar shall be broken off, and fall to the ground.

⁴ Come to Beth-el, and transgresse: to Gilgal, and multiplie transgression, and bring your sacrifices in the morning, and your tithes after three yeres.

⁵ But seeke not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and go not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall goe into captiuitie, and Beth-el shall come to nought.

¹³ But prophecie no more at Beth-el: for it is the Kings chappel, and it is the Kings court.

²⁹ And platted a crowne of thornes, and put it vpon his head, and a reede in his right hand, and bowed their knees before him, and mocked him, saying, God saue thee King of the Iewes, ³⁰ And spitted vpon him, and tooke a reede, and smote him on the head. ³¹ Thus when they had mocked him, they tooke the robe from him, and put his owne rayment on him, and led him away to crucifie him.

⁴⁰ And saying, Thou that destroyest ye Temple, and buildest it in three dayes, saue thy selfe: if thou be ye Sonne of God, come downe from ye crosse. ⁴¹ Likewise also the hie Priests mocking him, with the Scribes, and Elders, and Pharises, said, ⁴² He saued others, but he cannot saue him selfe: if he be ye King of Israel, let him now come downe from ye crosse, and we will beleeue in him. ⁴³ He trusted in God, let him deliuer him nowe, if he will haue him: for he saide, I am the Sonne of God.

²⁹ But as then hee that was borne after the flesh, persecuted him that was borne after the Spirit, euen so it is nowe.

³⁶ And others haue bene tryed by mockings and scourgings, yea, moreouer by bondes and prisonment.
