¹ For the Chief Musician; [a Psalm] of the sons of Korah. Maschil. We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the days of old. ² Thou didst drive out the nations with thy hand, and plantedst them in; thou didst afflict the peoples, and didst spread them abroad. ³ For they gat not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. ⁴ Thou art my King, O God: command deliverance for Jacob. ⁵ Through thee will we push down our adversaries: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. ⁶ For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. ⁷ But thou hast saved us from our adversaries, and hast put them to shame that hate us. ⁸ In God have we made our boast all the day long, and we will give thanks unto thy name for ever. Selah ⁹ But now thou hast cast [us] off, and brought us to dishonour; and goest not forth with our hosts. ¹⁰ Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. ¹¹ Thou hast given us like sheep [appointed] for meat; and hast scattered us among the nations. ¹² Thou sellest thy people for nought, and hast not increased [thy wealth] by their price. ¹³ Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. ¹⁴ Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. ¹⁵ All the day long is my dishonour before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, ¹⁶ For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the avenger. ¹⁷ All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. ¹⁸ Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way; ¹⁹ That thou hast sore broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death. ²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god; ²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. ²² Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. ²³ Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast [us] not off for ever. ²⁴ Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression? ²⁵ For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. ²⁶ Rise up for our help, and redeem us for thy lovingkindness’ sake.

²⁴ And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. ²⁵ And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service. ²⁶ And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? ²⁷ that ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD’S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

¹⁴ And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage: ¹⁵ and it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast: therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the womb, being males; but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.

¹⁴ Wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of the LORD, Vaheb in Suphah, And the valleys of Arnon, ¹⁵ And the slope of the valleys That inclineth toward the dwelling of Ar, And leaneth upon the border of Moab. ¹⁶ And from thence [they journeyed] to Beer: that is the well whereof the LORD said unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

²⁷ Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come ye to Heshbon, Let the city of Sihon be built and established: ²⁸ For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon: It hath devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to thee, Moab! Thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: He hath given his sons as fugitives, And his daughters into captivity, Unto Sihon king of the Amorites. ³⁰ We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, And we have laid waste even unto Nophah, Which [reacheth] unto Medeba.

²⁰ When thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?

¹³ And Gideon said unto him, Oh my lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out: ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:)

¹⁷ I will shew thee, hear thou me; and that which I have seen I will declare: ¹⁸ (Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it; ¹⁹ Unto whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them:)

³¹ They shall come and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done it.

¹ For the Chief Musician; Maschil of the sons of Korah. As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

¹⁸ Yea, even when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have declared thy strength unto [the next] generation, thy might to every one that is to come.

⁵ I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.

³ Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wondrous works that he hath done. ⁵ For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: ⁶ That the generation to come might know [them], even the children which should be born; who should arise and tell [them] to their children:

¹ Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name; make known his doings among the peoples. ² Sing unto him, sing praises unto him; talk ye of all his marvelous works.

¹⁹ The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.

³ Tell ye your children of it, and [let] your children [tell] their children, and their children another generation.

¹⁷ Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, The place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, The sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.

¹⁹ For the horses of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel walked on dry land in the midst of the sea.

²⁸ And I will send the hornet before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.

¹¹ Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

³² And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.

¹ When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before thee, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

¹⁰ And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite.

¹¹ And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were in the going down of Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

⁴² And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

²³ So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD spake unto Moses: and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.

⁴³ So the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.

¹² And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

⁶ But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with tumours, even Ashdod and the borders thereof. ⁷ And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon as, and upon Dagon our god.

¹⁰ And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,

²² Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and peoples, which thou didst allot after their portions: so they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. ²³ Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou didst say to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it. ²⁴ So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would. ²⁵ And they took fenced cities, and a fat land and possessed houses full of good things, cisterns hewn out, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness. ²⁶ Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their back, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them again unto thee, and they wrought great provocations. ²⁷ Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries.

⁵⁵ He drove out the nations also before them, and allotted them for an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

⁸ Thou broughtest a vine out of Egypt: thou didst drive out the nations, and plantedst it. ⁹ Thou preparedst [room] before it, and it took deep root, and filled the land. ¹⁰ The mountains were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were [like] cedars of God. ¹¹ She sent out her branches unto the sea, and her shoots unto the River.

⁴⁴ And he gave them the lands of the nations; and they took the labour of the peoples in possession:

¹⁰ Who smote many nations, and slew mighty kings; ¹¹ Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan: ¹² And gave their land for an heritage, an heritage unto Israel his people.

¹⁷ To him which smote great kings: for his mercy [endureth] for ever: ¹⁸ And slew famous kings: for his mercy [endureth] for ever: ¹⁹ Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy [endureth] for ever: ²⁰ And Og king of Bashan: for his mercy [endureth] for ever: ²¹ And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy [endureth] for ever: ²² Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy [endureth] for ever.

¹⁶ Terror and dread falleth upon them; By the greatness of thine arm they are as still as a stone; Till thy people pass over, O LORD, Till the people pass over which thou hast purchased.

⁸ If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it unto us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

³⁷ And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt; ³⁸ to drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as at this day.

⁷ The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all peoples: ⁸ but because the LORD loveth you, and because he would keep the oath which he sware unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

¹⁷ and thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. ¹⁸ But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as at this day.

¹⁵ Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all peoples, as at this day.

²² For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you a people unto himself.

⁶ Many there be that say, Who will shew us [any] good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

⁷ Shew thy marvelous lovingkindness, O thou that savest them which put their trust [in thee] from those that rise up [against them], by thy right hand.

⁶ Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he wilt answer him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.

⁵ Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and [why] art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him [for] the health of his countenance.

¹⁶ It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.

¹² that caused his glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses? that divided the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name?

⁶ Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

² I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob; ³ but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and [gave] his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness.

¹⁰ And not only so; but Rebecca also having conceived by one, [even] by our father Isaac— ¹¹ for [the children] being not yet born, neither having done anything good or bad, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth, ¹² it was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. ¹³ Even as it is written, Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated. ¹⁴ What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. ¹⁵ For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

⁷ But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves;

⁸ [Yet] the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the day-time, and in the night his song shall be with me, [even] a prayer unto the God of my life.

¹² Yet God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

¹⁸ For our shield belongeth unto the LORD; and our king to the Holy One of Israel.

² Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

²² For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.

²⁵ And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. ²⁶ And the unclean spirit, tearing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.

³¹ and he came and took her by the hand, and raised her up; and the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

³⁹ For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me. ⁴⁰ Thou hast also made mine enemies turn their backs unto me, that I might cut off them that hate me. ⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not. ⁴² Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind: I did cast them out as the mire of the streets.

¹⁴ Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer is the Holy One of Israel. ¹⁵ Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. ¹⁶ Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt rejoice in the LORD, thou shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

⁴ I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; and no beasts could stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and magnified himself.

⁵ And they shall be as mighty men, treading down [their enemies] in the mire of the streets in the battle; and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them: and the riders on horses shall be confounded.

²⁰ And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

¹³ I can do all things in him that strengtheneth me.

⁴⁷ and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hand.

⁷ Some [trust] in chariots, and some in horses: but we will make mention of the name of the LORD our God.

¹⁶ There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by great strength. ¹⁷ An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great power.

⁷ But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

⁵ There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee nor forsake thee.

⁸ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hands; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. ⁹ Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly; [for] he went up from Gilgal all the night. ¹⁰ And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and he slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

⁶ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for tomorrow at this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

⁹ For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath stood before you unto this day. ¹⁰ One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he spake unto you.

¹⁸ And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

⁴ And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go. ⁵ So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink. ⁶ And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water. ⁷ And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the people go every man unto his place. ⁸ And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. ⁹ And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt offering unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD answered him. ¹⁰ And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten down before Israel. ¹¹ And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car. ¹² Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few. ⁷ And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee, behold I am with thee according to thy heart. ⁸ Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto the men, and we will discover ourselves unto them. ⁹ If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them. ¹⁰ But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be the sign unto us.

¹⁴ Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it: let them be turned backward and brought to dishonour that delight in my hurt.

⁵ There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee; thou hast put them to shame, because God hath rejected them.

Selah ⁹ Do thou unto them as unto Midian; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon: ¹⁰ Which perished at En-dor; they became as dung for the earth. ¹¹ Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb; yea, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna: ¹² Who said, Let us take to ourselves in possession the habitations of God. ¹³ O my God, make them like the whirling dust; as stubble before the wind. ¹⁴ As the fire that burneth the forest, and as the flame that setteth the mountains on fire; ¹⁵ So pursue them with thy tempest, and terrify them with thy storm. ¹⁶ Fill their faces with confusion; that they may seek thy name, O LORD. ¹⁷ Let them be ashamed and dismayed for ever; yea, let them be confounded and perish: ¹⁸ That they may know that thou alone, whose name is JEHOVAH, art the Most High over all the earth.

¹⁸ His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

²⁴ And hath delivered us from our adversaries: for his mercy [endureth] for ever.

⁷ O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

¹⁰ It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who rescueth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

¹² To the end that [my] glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

² My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the meek shall hear thereof, and be glad.

¹ Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake. ² Wherefore should the nations say, Where is now their God? ³ But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he pleased. ⁴ Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. ⁵ They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; ⁶ They have ears, but they hear not; noses have they, but they smell not; ⁷ They have hands, but they handle not; feet have they, but they walk not; neither speak they through their throat. ⁸ They that make them shall be like unto them; yea, every one that trusteth in them. ⁹ O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. ¹⁰ O house of Aaron, trust ye in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. ¹¹ Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield. ¹² The LORD hath been mindful of us; he will bless [us]: he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron. ¹³ He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great. ¹⁴ The LORD increase you more and more, you and your children. ¹⁵ Blessed are ye of the LORD, which made heaven and earth. ¹⁶ The heavens are the heavens of the LORD; but the earth hath he given to the children of men. ¹⁷ The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence; ¹⁸ But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise ye the LORD.

²⁵ In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

²⁴ but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth, and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

¹⁷ But if thou bearest the name of a Jew, and restest upon the law, and gloriest in God,

²⁹ that no flesh should glory before God. ³⁰ But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: ³¹ that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

² For thou art the God of my strength; why hast thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast broken us down; thou hast been angry; O restore us again.

¹⁰ Hast not thou, O God, cast us off? and thou goest not forth, O God, with our hosts.

¹ Maschil of Asaph. O God, why hast thou cast [us] off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?

¹² Why hast thou broken down her fences, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her? ¹³ The boar out of the wood doth ravage it, and the wild beasts of the field feed on it.

¹⁴ LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?

³⁸ But thou hast cast off and rejected, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed. ³⁹ Thou hast abhorred the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown [even] to the ground. ⁴⁰ Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to rain. ⁴¹ All that pass by the way spoil him: he is become a reproach to his neighbours. ⁴² Thou hast exalted the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. ⁴³ Yea, thou turnest back the edge his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle. ⁴⁴ Thou hast made his brightness to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground. ⁴⁵ The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. ¹¹ Hast not thou cast us off, O God? and thou goest not forth, O God, with our hosts.

²⁴ Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD did choose, he hath cast them off? thus do they despise my people, that they should be no more a nation before them. ²⁵ Thus saith the LORD: If my covenant of day and night [stand] not, if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; ²⁶ then will I also cast away the seed of Jacob, and of David my servant, so that I will not take of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and will have mercy on them.

³¹ For the Lord will not cast off for ever. ³² For though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

¹ I say then, Did God cast off his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. ² God did not cast off his people which he foreknew. Or wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elijah? how he pleadeth with God against Israel, ³ Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have digged down thine altars: and I am left alone, and they seek my life. ⁴ But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have left for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal. ⁵ Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. ⁶ But if it is by grace, it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace.

¹⁴ But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;

¹⁷ And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be smitten before your enemies: they that hate you shall rule over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.

³⁶ And as for them that are left of you, I will send a faintness into their heart in the lands of their enemies: and the sound of a driven leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as one fleeth from the sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. ³⁷ And they shall stumble one upon another, as it were before the sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

²⁵ The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou shalt go out one way against them, and shalt flee seven ways before them: and thou shalt be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁸ Oh Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel hath turned their backs before their enemies!

¹² Therefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies, they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed: I will not be with you any more, except ye destroy the devoted thing from among you.

¹⁷ And he that brought the tidings answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. ³ And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers. ⁴ Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell upon it. ⁵ And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword, and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together. ⁷ And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were beyond Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

⁴¹ All that pass by the way spoil him: he is become a reproach to his neighbours.

⁶ I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

¹⁴ and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

¹³ Thy substance and thy treasures will I give for a spoil without price, and that for all thy sins, even in all thy borders.

⁸ For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, Violence and spoil: because the word of the LORD is made a reproach unto me, and a derision, all the day.

²⁷ And the LORD shall scatter you among the peoples, and ye shall be left few in number among the nations, whither the LORD shall lead you away.

⁶⁴ And the LORD shall scatter thee among all peoples, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou nor thy fathers, even wood and stone.

⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away unto Assyria, and placed them in Halah, and in Habor, [on] the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

⁴ Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.

²⁷ And that he would overthrow their seed among the nations, and scatter them in the lands.

¹¹ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall remain, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. ¹² And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

³ But thou, O LORD, knowest me; thou seest me, and triest mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

³⁷ Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

¹² As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so will I seek out my sheep; and I will deliver them out of all places whither they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led captive into all the nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

³⁶ Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

³⁰ How should one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Except their Rock had sold them, And the LORD had delivered them up?

¹⁴ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

⁸ Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

⁸ And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and would ye even sell your brethren, and should they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found never a word. ⁹ Also I said, The thing that ye do is not good: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies? ¹⁰ And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, do lend them money and corn on usury. I pray you, let us leave off this usury. ¹¹ Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them. ¹² Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

¹ Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement, wherewith I have put her away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities were ye sold, and for your transgressions was your mother put away.

³ For thus saith the LORD, Ye were sold for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money. ⁴ For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down at the first into Egypt to sojourn there: and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

¹³ and cinnamon, and spice, and incense, and ointment, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep; and [merchandise] of horses and chariots and slaves; and souls of men.

³⁷ And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all the peoples whither the LORD shall lead thee away.

⁴ We are become a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.

⁶ Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves.

⁵¹ Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD, wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.

³ Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. ⁴ Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

⁹ I will even give them up to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth for evil; to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places whither I shall drive them.

²⁷ For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for as often as thou speakest of him, thou waggest the head.

¹⁹ and I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged them. ²⁰ And when they came unto the nations, whither they went, they profaned my holy name; in that men said of them, These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land. ²¹ But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations, whither they went. ²² Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD: I do not [this] for your sake, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name, which ye have profaned among the nations, whither ye went. ²³ And I will sanctify my great name, which hath been profaned among the nations, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

⁷ then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all peoples:

²¹ This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

⁴ I also could speak as ye do; if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could join words together against you, and shake mine head at you.

⁶ He hath made me also a byword of the people; and I am become an open abhorring.

⁷ All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, [saying],

²⁵ I am become also a reproach unto them: when they see me, they shake their head.

²² this is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

¹⁵ All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, [saying]: Is this the city that men called The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth? ¹⁶ All thine enemies have opened their mouth wide against thee; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it. ¹⁷ The LORD hath done that which he devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of old; he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused the enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath exalted the horn of thine adversaries.

⁷ And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? would that we had been content and dwelt beyond Jordan! ⁸ Oh Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel hath turned their backs before their enemies! ⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall compass us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do for thy great name?

²¹ And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.

⁶ and I said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto the heavens.

⁷ Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.

¹³ Let them be ashamed [and] consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.

⁴⁵ The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah

²⁵ Let us lie down in our shame, and let our confusion cover us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day: and we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

⁵¹ We are ashamed, because we have heard reproach; confusion hath covered our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of the LORD’S house.

² Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou established strength, because of thine adversaries, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

¹⁰ How long, O God, shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?

¹⁸ Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that foolish people have blasphemed thy name.

²² Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee all the day. ²³ Forget not the voice of thine adversaries: the tumult of those that rise up against thee ascendeth continually.

¹² And render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.

³ And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of contumely: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. ⁴ It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.

¹⁷ Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.

²³ Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? [even] against the Holy One of Israel. ²⁴ By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into his farthest height, the forest of his fruitful field.

¹² then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

¹⁴ then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;

¹⁷ The wicked shall return to Sheol, even all the nations that forget God.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god;

⁷ That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

⁵⁷ But turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

¹⁰ For thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength; therefore thou plantest pleasant plants, and settest it with strange slips:

³² Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

³² not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD.

⁵⁹ For thus saith the Lord GOD: I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast despised the oath in breaking the covenant.

³⁷ And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant;

¹³ As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet have we not entreated the favour of the LORD our God, that we should turn from our iniquities, and have discernment in thy truth.

⁵ because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

¹¹ My foot hath held fast to his steps; his way have I kept, and turned not aside. ¹² I have not gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured up the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

²⁷ Because they turned aside from following him, and would not have regard to any of his ways:

⁵¹ The proud have had me greatly in derision: [yet] have I not swerved from thy law.

¹⁵⁷ Many are my persecutors and mine adversaries; [yet] have I not swerved from they testimonies.

⁵ But as for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel.

¹⁰ They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they are gone after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.

⁶ and them that are turned back from following the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor inquired after him.

³² Remember Lot’s wife.

⁵⁸ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not vain in the Lord.

¹⁰ Ye are witnesses, and God [also], how holily and righteously and unblameably we behaved ourselves toward you that believe:

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own; let a cloud dwell upon it; let all that maketh black the day terrify it.

²¹ Before I go whence I shall not return, [even] to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² A land of thick darkness, as darkness [itself]; [a land] of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

²⁹ I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches.

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

⁸ I am faint and sore bruised: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

⁸ Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

¹³ Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters. ¹⁴ Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, thou gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.

¹ In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the swift serpent, and leviathan the crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

¹³ And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and thistles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of jackals, a court for ostriches. ¹⁴ And the wild beasts of the desert shall meet with the wolves, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; yea, the night-monster shall settle there, and shall find her a place of rest.

⁷ And the glowing sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water: in the habitation of jackals, where they lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

¹⁷ And thou shalt say this word unto them, Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.

³ speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

¹⁶ The people which sat in darkness Saw a great light, And to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, To them did light spring up.

⁹ And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him.

² And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority.

¹¹ And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like unto a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. ¹² And he exerciseth all the authority of the first beast in his sight. And he maketh the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose death-stroke was healed. ¹³ And he doeth great signs, that he should even make fire to come down out of heaven upon the earth in the sight of men.

¹⁰ And the fifth poured out his bowl upon the throne of the beast; and his kingdom was darkened; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

²⁹ And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD; the thunders shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know that the earth is the LORD’S.

¹⁴ Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples which are round about you;

²² And Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven:

¹³ If thou set thine heart aright, and stretch out thine hands toward him;

⁵ If I have walked with vanity, and my foot hath hasted to deceit; ⁶ (Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity;) ⁷ If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any spot hath cleaved to mine hands: ⁸ Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out. ⁹ If mine heart have been enticed unto a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door: ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For that were an heinous crime; yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges: ¹² For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, and would root out all mine increase. ¹³ If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me: ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother’s womb;) ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate: ²² Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. ²³ For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his excellency I could do nothing. ²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, [Thou art] my confidence; ²⁵ If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much; ²⁶ If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; ²⁷ And my heart hath been secretly enticed, and my mouth hath kissed my hand: ²⁸ This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges: for I should have lied to God that is above. ²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him; ³⁰ (Yea, I suffered not my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse;) ³¹ If the men of my tent said not, Who can find one that hath not been satisfied with his flesh? ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street; but I opened my doors to the traveller; ³³ If like Adam I covered my transgressions, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom; ³⁴ Because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door— ³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me! (lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me;) and [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written! ³⁶ Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him. ³⁸ If my land cry out against me, and the furrows thereof weep together; ³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life: ⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. ³ O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; ⁴ If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause was mine adversary:) ⁵ Let the enemy pursue my soul, and overtake it; yea, let him tread my life down to the earth, and lay my glory in the dust. ¹⁷ All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

³¹ Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall haste to stretch out her hands unto God.

¹¹ And they forgat his doings, and his wondrous works that he had shewed them.

⁹ There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.

²² The LORD, the God of gods, the LORD, the God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against the LORD, (save thou us not this day,) ²³ that we have built us an altar to turn away from following the LORD; or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;

⁴ Doth not he see my ways, and number all my steps?

¹⁴ What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of a man, and he seeth all his goings. ²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

LORD, thou hast searched me, and known [me]. ² Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. ³ Thou searchest out my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. ⁴ For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. ⁵ Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. ⁶ [Such] knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. ⁷ Whither shall I from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? ⁸ If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, thou art there. ⁹ If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; ¹⁰ Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. ¹¹ If I say, Surely the darkness shall overwhelm me, and the light about me shall be night; ¹² Even the darkness hideth not from thee, but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike [to thee]. ¹³ For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. ¹⁴ I will give thanks unto thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: wonderful are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. ¹⁵ My frame was not hidden from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. ¹⁶ Thine eyes did see mine unperfect substance, and in thy book were all [my members] written, which day by day were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. ¹⁷ How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! ¹⁸ If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. ¹⁹ Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloodthirsty men. ²⁰ For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take [thy name] in vain. ²¹ Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? ²² I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. ²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me and know my thoughts: ²⁴ And see if there be any way of wickedness in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

¹⁴ For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

²⁴ Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

¹⁶ in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men, according to my gospel, by Jesus Christ.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God.

¹² For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. ¹³ And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

¹⁷ And the king said unto the guard that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and did not disclose it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD. ¹⁸ And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and he slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. ¹⁹ And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen and asses and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

¹⁰ And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

¹¹ Thou hast given us like sheep [appointed] for meat; and hast scattered us among the nations.

² The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth. ³ Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.

⁷ He was oppressed, yet he humbled himself and opened not his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before her shearers is dumb; yea, he opened not his mouth.

¹⁰ Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹ Blessed are ye when [men] shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. ¹² Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

²¹ But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

² They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. ³ And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

⁹ For, I think, God hath set forth us the apostles last of all, as men doomed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.

³⁰ Why do we also stand in jeopardy every hour? ³¹ I protest by that glorying in you, brethren, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

³ And I will give unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. ⁴ These are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks, standing before the Lord of the earth. ⁵ And if any man desireth to hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man shall desire to hurt them, in this manner must he be killed. ⁶ These have the power to shut the heaven, that it rain not during the days of their prophecy: and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to smite the earth with every plague, as often as they shall desire. ⁷ And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that cometh up out of the abyss shall make war with them, and overcome them, and kill them. ⁸ And their dead bodies [lie] in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. ⁹ And from among the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations do [men] look upon their dead bodies three days and a half, and suffer not their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb.

⁶ And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I wondered with a great wonder.

⁶ Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself against the rage of mine adversaries: and awake for me; thou hast commanded judgment.

⁵ For the spoiling of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety at whom they puff.

²³ Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, [even] unto my cause, my God and my Lord.

⁹ But now thou hast cast [us] off, and brought us to dishonour; and goest not forth with our hosts.

⁴ They run and prepare themselves without [my] fault: awake thou to help me, and behold. ⁵ Even thou, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, arise to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah

⁷ Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?

⁶⁵ Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

⁹ Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the days of old, the generations of ancient times. Art thou not it that cut Rahab in pieces, that pierced the dragon?

³⁸ And he himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

²³ And it came to pass in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

²⁰ And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: For they are a very froward generation, Children in whom is no faith.

²⁴ Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?

¹ Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?

¹¹ He saith in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.

¹ Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. ² For thou art the God of my strength; why hast thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? ³ O send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me: let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. ⁴ Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: and upon the harp will I praise thee, O God, my God.

¹⁹ O deliver not the soul of thy turtle-dove unto the wild beast: forget not the life of thy poor for ever.

²³ Forget not the voice of thine adversaries: the tumult of those that rise up against thee ascendeth continually.

²⁷ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed away from my God? ²⁸ Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard? the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding.

⁹ And when he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of them that had been slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: ¹⁰ and they cried with a great voice, saying, How long, O Master, the holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

¹¹ Thou broughtest us into the net; thou layedst a sore burden upon our loins. ¹² Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.

²⁵ My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word.

²³ and I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy back as the ground, and as the street, to them that go over.

⁵ They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dung-hills.

²² Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.

¹¹ But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me.

² Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help.

⁷ O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. ⁸ And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
