⁵ On the day of our king the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners.

²⁰ And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

⁴ And it came to pass, when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Beth-el, that Jeroboam put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to him.

¹ Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

¹² They that sit in the gate talk of me; and [I am] the song of the drunkards.

²⁰ Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise: but the companion of fools shall smart for it.

¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; and whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.

²⁹ Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek out mixed wine. ³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it goeth down smoothly. ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thine heart shall utter froward things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ They have stricken me, [shalt thou say], and I was not hurt; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

¹¹ Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that tarry late into the night, till wine inflame them! ¹² And the harp and the lute, the tabret and the pipe, and wine, are [in] their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.

²² Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: ²³ which justify the wicked for a reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

¹ Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are overcome with wine!

⁷ But these also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are gone astray; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are gone astray through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. ⁸ For all tables are full of vomit [and] filthiness, [so that there is] no place [clean].

¹ Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. ² Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink therein. ³ Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank in them. ⁴ They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

¹⁵ Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that addest thy venom [thereto], and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! ¹⁶ Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and be as one uncircumcised: the cup of the LORD’S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and foul shame shall be upon thy glory.

⁶ But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.

²¹ And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

¹⁸ And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit;

³ For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries: ⁴ wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of [you]:
