¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the understanding.

³² He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he doeth it that would destroy his own soul.

¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; and whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.

²⁷ For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. ²⁸ Yea, she lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the treacherous among men. ²⁹ Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek out mixed wine. ³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it goeth down smoothly. ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thine heart shall utter froward things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ They have stricken me, [shalt thou say], and I was not hurt; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

⁷ Surely extortion maketh a wise man foolish; and a gift destroyeth the understanding.

¹² And the harp and the lute, the tabret and the pipe, and wine, are [in] their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.

⁷ But these also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are gone astray; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are gone astray through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

¹² My people ask counsel at their stock, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredom hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

³⁴ But take heed to yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you suddenly as a snare:

¹¹ And this, knowing the season, that now it is high time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we [first] believed. ¹² The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. ¹³ Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy. ¹⁴ But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfill] the lusts [thereof].
