¹ And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and she said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.

³¹ And the LORD saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

¹⁶ And they journeyed from Beth-el; and there was still some way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. ¹⁷ And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; for now thou shalt have another son. ¹⁸ And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin. ¹⁹ And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (the same is Beth-lehem).

¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind.

¹⁵ And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

²⁹ And Moses said unto him, Art thou jealous for my sake? would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

⁴ And when the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters portions: ⁵ but unto Hannah he gave a double portion: for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁶ And her rival provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ And [as] he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. ⁸ And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?

⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

¹ After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day. ² And Job answered and said: ³ Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night which said, There is a man child conceived.

¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures; ²² Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

² For vexation killeth the foolish man, and jealousy slayeth the silly one.

¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? for now shall I hold my peace and give up the ghost.

¹⁶ They envied Moses also in the camp, [and] Aaron the saint of the LORD.

³⁰ A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy is the rottenness of the bones.

⁴ Then I saw all labour and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontide; ¹⁷ because he slew me not from the womb; and so my mother should have been my grave, and her womb always great. ¹⁸ Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

³ he left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

⁸ For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food.

³ for ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you jealousy and strife, are ye not carnal, and walk after the manner of men?

¹⁰ For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, [a repentance] which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

²¹ envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they which practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

³ For we also were aforetime foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.

⁵ Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying?
