⁷ and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort wherewith he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced yet more.

⁴ And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. ⁵ And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.

O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ² Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am withered away: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed. ³ My soul also is sore vexed: and thou, O LORD, how long? ⁴ Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: save me for thy lovingkindness’ sake. ⁵ For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in Sheol who shall give thee thanks? ⁶ I am weary with my groaning; every night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

⁵ For his anger is but for a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may tarry for the night, but joy [cometh] in the morning.

⁹ Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in distress: mine eye wasteth away with grief, [yea], my soul and my body. ¹⁰ For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are wasted away. ¹¹ Because of all mine adversaries I am become a reproach, yea, unto my neighbours exceedingly, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

¹⁸ For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

¹ For the Chief Musician. A psalm of David: when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness; according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

⁵ They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. ⁶ Though he goeth on his way weeping, bearing forth the seed; he shall come again with joy, bringing his sheaves [with him].

⁵ Let the righteous smite me, [it shall be] a kindness; and let him reprove me, [it shall be as] oil upon the head; let not my head refuse it: for even in their wickedness shall my prayer continue.

⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: reprove a wise man, and he will love thee. ⁹ Give [instruction] to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself [thus], Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf unaccustomed [to the yoke]: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God. ¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth. ²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD.

⁴ Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

⁷⁵ And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

⁴⁴ And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat became as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground.

²³ who, when he was come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad; and he exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord:

¹² that is, that I with you may be comforted in you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.

¹⁴ as also ye did acknowledge us in part, that we are your glorying, even as ye also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.

³ And I wrote this very thing, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is [the joy] of you all. ⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be made sorry, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

⁹ For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye are obedient in all things.

² For verily in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven:

¹⁰ For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, [a repentance] which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. ¹¹ For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what longing, yea, what zeal, yea, what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter.

¹⁶ But thanks be to God, which putteth the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus.

²⁰ according to my earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing shall I be put to shame, but [that] with all boldness, as always, [so] now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.

⁵ For though I am absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

⁶ But when Timothy came even now unto us from you, and brought us glad tidings of your faith and love, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, longing to see us, even as we also [to see] you;

⁸ for now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away [from them].

⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.

¹⁷ Elijah was a man of like passions with us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain; and it rained not on the earth for three years and six months.

⁴ I rejoice greatly that I have found [certain] of thy children walking in truth, even as we received commandment from the Father.

³ Beloved, while I was giving all diligence to write unto you of our common salvation, I was constrained to write unto you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered unto the saints.
