¹¹ And all the people that were in the gate and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, who built the house of Israel; and be thou a man of valour in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem;

³¹ for it was as a light thing unto him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, and he took to wife Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal and worshipped him.

²⁴ Him that dies of Ahab in the city, the dogs shall eat, and him that dies in the field, shall the fowls of the air eat. ²⁵ (Truly there was none like unto Ahab, who sold himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife incited him.

¹ ¶ And Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, seeing that her son was dead, arose and destroyed all the royal seed.

¹³ ¶ A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple and knows nothing. ¹⁴ For she sits at the door of her house on a seat in the high places of the city ¹⁵ to call to those who pass by the way, to those who straighten their ways;

¹³ ¶ A foolish son is a pain unto his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

⁹ ¶ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

¹⁹ ¶ It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and an angry woman.

³ ¶ Through wisdom the house shall be built, and with intelligence it shall be established: ⁴ And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and beautiful riches.

⁶ And Solomon said, Thou hast shown unto thy slave David, my father, great mercy, according to the way he walked before thee in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great mercy that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

¹ ¶ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God and departed from evil.

⁴ He who invokes God and he answers him is mocked by his friend; the just and perfect man is laughed to scorn.

²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, that the fear of the Lord, is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

²¹ Tau Integrity and uprightness shall preserve me, for I have waited for thee.

¹ ¶ Aleph Halelu-JAH. Blessed is the man that fears the LORD, Beth that delights greatly in his commandments.

³ Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we are exceedingly weary of being held in contempt. ⁴ Our soul is exceedingly weary of the scorning of those that are at ease and of the contempt of the proud.

¹⁵ whose ways are crooked, and they are crooked in their paths;

¹² ¶ He that is void of understanding despises his neighbour, but the intelligent man remains silent.

¹⁷ ¶ The highway of the upright is to separate himself from evil; he that keeps his way preserves his soul.

¹ ¶ Better is the poor that walks in his integrity than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

⁶ ¶ Better is the poor that walks in his perfection than he that is perverse in his ways, though he is rich.

¹³ ¶ The conclusion of the entire sermon is heard: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole happiness of man.

⁵ My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear with which he feared me and was broken before my name. ⁶ The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and righteousness and turned many away from iniquity.

¹⁶ He that hears you hears me, and he that despises you despises me, and he that despises me despises him that sent me.

¹⁴ And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things, and they derided him.

³¹ Then the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} had rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria and were edified, walking in the fear of the Lord, and with the comfort of the Holy Spirit they were multiplied.

²² And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man and one that fears God and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by a holy angel to send for thee into his house and to hear words of thee.

³⁵ but in every nation he that fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.

⁴ Or dost thou despise the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, ignoring that the goodness of God leads thee to repentance? ⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

² For there shall be men who are lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, evil speakers, disobedient to their parents, unthankful, impure, ³ without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, without temperance, without meekness, without goodness,

³ Do not multiply thyself speaking great and lofty things; let arrogant words cease from your mouth, for the LORD is the all-knowing God, and the magnificent works are his.

²¹ Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it comes.

³ The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips and the tongue that speaks proud things:

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech. ¶ Why dost thou boast of evil, O strong man? The mercy of God is day by day. ² Thy tongue devises wickedness like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

⁴ My soul is among lions, and I lie even among those that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁶ ¶ The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

⁶ ¶ A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for strokes.

²⁴ ¶ Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who deals in proud wrath.

⁸ ¶ He that sows iniquity shall reap iniquity, and the rod of his anger shall fail.

²⁵ ¶ He that is of a proud heart stirs up strife, but he that puts his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.

²⁰ also regarding the ten horns that were in its head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; and that same horn had eyes and a mouth that spoke very grand things, whose appearance was greater than his fellows.

⁹ that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. ¹⁰ For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto saving health.

⁵ In the same manner, the tongue is a very small member and boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

¹⁸ For speaking arrogant words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from those who converse in error,

¹⁰ Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the entire world, to try those that dwell upon the earth.

¹¹ And they have overcome him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

⁵ ¶ And after these things I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in the heaven was opened; ⁶ and the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles.

²³ ¶ In the fallow ground of the poor there is much bread, but it is lost for lack of judgment.

⁶ ¶ I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities and want of bread in all your places: yet ye have not returned unto me, said the LORD.

⁹ For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the grain. Does God take care for oxen? ¹⁰ Or does he say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that plows should plow in hope, and that he that threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. ¹¹ If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap material things from you?

¹⁶ Thou shalt not give false testimony against thy neighbour.

¹ ¶ Thou shalt not admit a false rumour; put not thine hand with the wicked to be a false witness.

¹³ Then the two men, sons of Belial, came in and sat before him; and those men of Belial witnessed against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth blasphemed God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones that he died.

¹² And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramothgilead and be prospered, for the LORD shall deliver it into the king’s hand. ¹³ And the messenger that had gone to call Micaiah spoke unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king with one mouth; now let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them and speak that which is good. ¹⁴ And Micaiah said, As the LORD lives, all that the LORD says unto me, that will I speak.

¹⁹ a false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

¹⁷ ¶ He that speaks truth shows forth righteousness, but a false witness, deceit.

⁵ ¶ The righteous man hates lying: but the wicked man makes himself loathsome, and abominable.

²⁵ ¶ The true witness delivers souls, but the deceitful one speaks lies.

⁵ ¶ A false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

⁹ ¶ The false witness shall not go unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

¹⁸ ¶ Open my eyes, and I shall behold the wonders of thy law.

⁹⁸ ¶ Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies, for they are eternal unto me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers, for thy testimonies have been my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the elders because I keep thy precepts.

⁹ They are all plain to him that understands and right to those that have found wisdom.

²⁴ ¶ Wisdom appears upon the countenance of him that has understanding, but the eyes of a fool manifest his folly unto the ends of the earth.

² ¶ A fool has no delight in understanding, but in that which his own heart discovers.

¹² ¶ Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

²⁰ To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

⁹ The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

²² The lamp of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye is sincere, thy whole body shall be full of light. ²³ But if thine eye is evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If, therefore, the light that is in thee is darkness, how great is that darkness!

²⁵ ¶ At that time Jesus answered and said, I praise thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and understanding and hast revealed them unto children. ²⁶ Even so, Father, for thus it was pleasing in thy sight. ²⁷ All things are delivered unto me of my Father, and no one has known the Son but the Father, neither has anyone known the Father except the Son and he unto whom the Son will reveal him.

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given. ¹² For whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have in abundance; but whosoever has not, from him shall be taken away even that which he has.

²¹ because having known God, they did not glorify him as God, neither were thankful, but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. ²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools ²³ and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man and of birds and of fourfooted beasts and of serpents. ²⁴ Therefore God also gave them over to the lusts of their own hearts for uncleanness, to contaminate their own bodies between themselves, ²⁵ who changed the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for all ages. Amen. ²⁶ For this cause God gave them up unto shameful affections, for even their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature; ²⁷ and likewise also the males, leaving the natural use of the females, burned in their lust one toward another, males with males committing nefarious works and receiving in themselves the recompense that proceeded from their error. ²⁸ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a perverse understanding, to do those things which are not convenient,

³¹ and Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. ³² Why? Because they followed it not by faith but, as it were, by the works (of the law); therefore, they stumbled on the stumblingstone;

¹⁸ ¶ Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you seems to be wise in this age, let them become a fool that they may be wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness.

² And if anyone thinks that they know anything, they know nothing yet as they ought to know.

⁵ And if any of you lacks wisdom, let them ask of God (who gives abundantly to all, and without reproach), and it shall be given them.

³ ¶ knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts ⁴ and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the day in which the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. ⁵ Of course, they willingly ignore that the heavens were created of old and the earth standing out of the water and in the water, by the word of God;

⁶ Forsake that which is foolish and live and go in the way of understanding.

²⁰ ¶ He that walks with wise men shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.

²⁷ ¶ Cease, my son, to hear the teaching that induces one to deviate from the reasons of wisdom.

¹¹ But now I have written unto you not to associate with anyone calling himself a brother if he is a fornicator or covetous or an idolater or a railer or a drunkard or an extortioner; with such a one do not even eat.

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

¹⁰ Resh The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; Schin A good understanding have all those that do his will; Tau His praise endures for ever.

⁵ O that my ways were ordered to keep thy statutes!

³⁴ Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. ³⁵ ¶ Make me to go in the path of thy commandments, for therein do I delight.

⁷³ ¶ JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding, and I shall learn thy commandments.

⁸ Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning, for in thee do I trust; cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul unto thee.

⁹ Then shalt thou understand righteousness and judgment and equity, yea, every good path.

²⁰ I shall lead in the way of righteousness in the midst of the paths of judgment,

¹⁸ ¶ The wicked works a deceitful work, but to him that sows righteousness shall be a sure reward.

²⁰ Lift up your eyes, and behold those that come from the north wind: where is the flock that was given thee, the cattle of thy beauty?

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

²² that ye put off everything concerning the old way of life, that is, the old man who corrupts himself according to deceitful desires,

¹⁷ Therefore, be ye not unwise, but understanding of what the will of the Lord is.

⁹ ¶ For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, asking that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, ¹⁰ that ye might walk worthy of the Lord, pleasing him in everything, being fruitful in every good work, and growing in the knowledge of God,

¹³ But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

¹⁵ and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto saving health by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, ¹⁷ that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

¹³ ¶ Who is wise and ready among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom.

¹⁶ How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up the scorn like water? ⁸ Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men. ⁹ For he said, It shall profit a man nothing that he should conform his will with God.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and the fools hate knowledge?

⁴ So shalt thou find grace and good favour in the sight of God and man.

³⁵ For whosoever finds me shall find life and shall obtain the will of the LORD.

²³ ¶ To make an abomination is as sport to the fool, but wisdom is recreation to the man of intelligence.

² ¶ The good man shall attain the favour of the LORD, but the man of wicked thoughts he will condemn.

¹⁵ ¶ Good understanding brings forth grace: but the way of transgressors is hard.

¹⁸ ¶ As a mad man who casts firebrands, arrows, and death, ¹⁹ so is the man that destroys his friend and says, Am I not in sport?

²⁰ Such is the track of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness.

¹⁷ for the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. ¹⁸ For he that in these things serves the Christ is well pleasing unto God and approved of men.

¹⁸ how that they told you, That in the last time there would be mockers, who would walk after their own ungodly desires.

²¹ ¶ And they said one to another, We are truly guilty concerning our brother in that we saw the anguish of his soul when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul and prayed unto the LORD and wept sore;

²⁷ And when she came to the man of God in the mountain, she caught him by the feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone, for her soul is bitter within her; and the LORD has hid it from me and has not revealed it to me.

² Oh that my grief and calamity were justly weighed and laid equally in the balances! ³ For it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore, my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

¹¹ Therefore, I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁸ He will not suffer me to take my breath but has filled me with bitterness.

¹ ¶ My soul is cut off in my life; therefore, I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁴ Nun The secret of the LORD is for those that fear him, and he will show them his covenant.

¹³ ¶ A joyful heart makes a beautiful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is abated.

¹⁴ ¶ The spirit of man will bear his infirmity, but a broken spirit who can bear?

¹⁴ And the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me.

³³ And he takes with him Peter and James and John and began to be alarmed and to be anguished ³⁴ and said unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death; tarry ye here, and watch.

²⁷ ¶ Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour, but for this have I come in this hour.

¹⁸ ¶ I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

²³ Jesus answered and said unto him, He who loves me will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him and dwell with him.

⁷ And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

⁸ whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though at present ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory;

¹⁷ He that has an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}; To him that overcomes I will give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a small white stone and in the stone a new name written, which no one knows except the one that receives it.

⁶ if thou wert pure and upright, surely now he would awake upon thee and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

¹⁵ He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand; he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.

³⁴ For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and he shall be brought to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ He shall dwell in his tent, as if it were not his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that does not know God.

²⁶ All darkness is kept for his secrets; a fire not blown shall consume him; his successor shall be broken in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall be taken captive; they shall be scattered in the day of his wrath.

²⁸ For ye say, What is of the house of the prince, and what of the tent of the habitation of the wicked?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God and the heritage of the violent, which they shall receive of the Almighty. ¹⁴ If their sons are multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death; and their widows shall not weep. ¹⁶ Though he heaps up silver as the dust and prepares raiment as the clay, ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He built his house as a moth and as a booth that the keeper makes. ¹⁹ The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered; he shall open his eyes and not see anyone. ²⁰ Terrors shall take hold on him as waters; a whirlwind shall carry him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind shall take him away, and he shall depart; the storm shall catch him up out of his place. ²² For God shall cast down on him and not spare; he would attempt to flee out of his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and from his place they shall hiss at him.

² Gimel His seed shall be mighty upon earth; Daleth the generation of the upright shall be blessed. ³ He Wealth and riches shall be in his house; Vau and his righteousness endures for ever.

³ Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thy house; thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

³³ The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked, but he shall bless the habitation of the just.

²⁸ ¶ He that trusts in his riches shall fall, but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

⁷ ¶ God shall overthrow the wicked, and they shall not be any longer, but the house of the righteous shall remain.

¹² ¶ The righteous man wisely considers the house of the wicked, how God overthrows the wicked for their evil.

²⁰ ¶ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it up.

¹¹ And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. ¹² And they shall build up out of thee the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the fallen foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

⁴ I brought it forth, said the LORD of the hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name; and it shall remain in the midst of his house and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

²⁶ And every one that hears these words of mine and does not do them shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; ²⁷ and the rain descended, and the rivers came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it.

¹⁵ ¶ The way of the fool is right in his own eyes, but he that hears counsel is wise.

²⁵ ¶ There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

¹³ Enter ye in at the narrow gate, for the way that leads to destruction is wide and spacious, and those who follow it are many; ¹⁴ because narrow is the gate, and confined is the way which leads unto life, and there are few that find it.

²⁴ Strive to enter in at the narrow gate; for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in and shall not be able.

²¹ What fruit had ye then in those things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

³ For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

⁶ Let no one deceive you with vain words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

⁴ But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.

² I said of laughter, It is mad, and of mirth, What does it do?

¹⁰ And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them; I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour, and this was my portion of all my labour. ¹¹ At last I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought and on the labour that I had laboured to do; and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

⁵ It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools. ⁶ The laughter of the fool is as the crackling of thorns under a pot, and this also (the laughter or prosperity of the fool) is vanity.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime didst receive thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and thou art tormented.

⁹ Be afflicted and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness.

⁷ As much as she has glorified herself and lived deliciously, give her that much torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. ⁸ Therefore, shall her plagues come in one day, death and mourning and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judges her.

³¹ Therefore they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own counsel. ³² For the rest of the ignorant shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

¹⁴ ¶ Man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, and the recompense of a man’s hands shall be rendered unto him.

¹⁰ ¶ The heart knows the bitterness of his soul, and a stranger shall not intermeddle with his joy.

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall chastise thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee; know therefore and see how evil and bitter it is, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God and that my fear is lacking in thee, saith the Lord GOD of the hosts.

⁵ Why then is this people of Jerusalem rebellious with a perpetual rebellion? They hold fast deceit; they refuse to return.

⁵ ¶ Thus hath the LORD said; Cursed be the man that trusts in man and makes flesh his arm and whose heart departs from the LORD.

³¹ Therefore have I poured out my indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath; I have recompensed their own way upon their heads, said the Lord GOD.

¹⁶ for Israel has turned away as a wild heifer; shall the LORD now feed them as rams in a large place?

⁶ and those that have turned back from following the LORD and those that did not seek the LORD, nor enquired about him.

¹⁴ but whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life.

¹² ¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world and more abundantly towards you.

⁴ But let everyone prove his own work, and then he shall have glory regarding only himself, and not in another.

⁸ For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that sows in the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

¹² Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unfaithfulness, to depart from the living God.

²⁰ Certainly, if having separated themselves from the contaminations of the world, by the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again entangle themselves therein and are overcome, their latter end is made worse for them than the beginnings. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog returns unto his own vomit, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

²⁶ Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

¹⁴ That we no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive,

¹ ¶ Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

⁹ And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep what thou hast unto thyself.

¹⁸ Then he said, If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive.

¹⁵ But the former captains that had been before me had charged the people and had taken of them for bread and wine, upon forty shekels of silver; and in addition to this their servants bore rule over the people; but I did not do so because of the fear of God.

²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate; ²² then let my back fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its joint. ²³ For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power.

¹⁴ Nun Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of thee, and I am afraid of thy judgments.

⁷ ¶ Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil.

²² He went after her straightway, as an ox goes to the slaughter or as a fool to the correction of the stocks,

⁶ ¶ By mercy and truth iniquity is purged, and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

¹⁴ ¶ Blessed is the man that fears God always, but he that hardens his heart shall fall into evil.

⁹ ¶ If a wise man contends with a foolish man, whether he rages or laughs, there is no rest.

¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her. ¹⁸ For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife. ¹⁹ Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him and would have killed him, but she could not;

²⁴ And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. ²⁵ And she came in with haste unto the king and asked, saying, I will that thou give me immediately in a platter the head of John the Baptist.

⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also?

²² Separate yourselves from all appearance of evil.

⁶ And he thought it a small matter to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for now they had declared unto him the people of Mordecai; therefore, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, the people of Mordecai.

⁵ And King Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther, the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that has filled his heart with the arrogance to do so? ⁶ Then Esther said, The man who is the adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil,

¹⁶ ¶ A fool’s wrath is presently known, but he who covers the injury is sane.

²⁹ ¶ He that is slow to wrath is of great intelligence, but he that is short of spirit exalts folly.

¹⁸ ¶ A wrathful man stirs up strife, but he that is slow to anger appeases strife.

³² ¶ He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city.

²⁴ ¶ Do not meddle with an angry man, and with a furious man thou shalt not go:

⁹ Do not be hasty in thy spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

⁷ Certainly the greedy use evil measures: he devises wicked devices to ensnare the simple with lying words and to speak in judgment against the poor.

²⁶ For among my people were found wicked men: they lay in wait as he that sets snares; they set a trap of perdition to catch men. ²⁷ As a cage full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit; thus they became great and rich. ²⁸ They are become fat; they shine; yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they did not judge the cause, the cause of the fatherless; with all this they made themselves prosperous; and they did not judge the cause of the poor. ²⁹ Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

¹⁹ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

³⁵ The wise shall inherit glory; but shame shall be the promotion of fools.

⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. ⁸ Grow in wisdom, and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honour when thou hast embraced her. ⁹ She shall give to thine head an increase of grace; a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

²⁹ ¶ He that troubles his own house shall inherit the wind, and the fool shall be slave to the wise of heart. ³⁰ ¶ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he that wins souls is wise.

¹⁹ O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the time of the affliction; Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things in which there is no profit.

¹⁷ But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goes forth out of our own mouth to burn incense unto the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings unto her as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

³ And those that understand shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and those that teach righteousness to the multitude as the stars in perpetual eternity.

²⁹ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the sepulchres of the righteous ³⁰ and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. ³¹ Therefore ye are witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the sons of those who murdered the prophets. ³² Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

⁸ from now on there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all those also that have loved his appearing.

¹⁸ knowing that ye have been ransomed from your vain conversation (which you received from your fathers), not with corruptible things like silver and gold,

⁴ And when the great Prince of the pastors shall appear, ye shall receive the incorruptible crown of glory.

⁶ And Joseph was the lord over the land, and he it was that sold the wheat to all the people of the land; and Joseph’s brethren came and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

²⁸ And they answered, Thy slave our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.

⁸ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said unto them, Intreat the LORD that he may take away the frogs from me and from my people, and I will let the people go that they may sacrifice unto the LORD.

²⁷ Then Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron and said unto them, I have sinned this time; the LORD is righteous, and I and my people are wicked. ²⁸ Intreat the LORD that the thunderings of God and the hail might cease; and I will let you go, and ye shall stay here no longer.

⁸ And all these thy slaves shall come down unto me and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Go out, and all the people that follow thee; and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.

³⁶ And it shall come to pass that every one that is left in thy house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into some aspect of the priesthood that I may eat a piece of bread.

¹² And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

⁷ ¶ And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden, and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther, the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king. ⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine, and Haman had fallen upon the bed upon which Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? When this word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face.

¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling.

²⁹ ¶ He that troubles his own house shall inherit the wind, and the fool shall be slave to the wise of heart.

¹⁴ The sons also of those that afflicted thee shall come humbled unto thee; and at the steps of thy feet all those that despised thee shall bow themselves down; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

⁹ I will bear the indignation of the LORD because I have sinned against him, until he has judged my cause and executed my judgment; he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness. ¹⁰ Then she that is my enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her who said unto me, Where is the LORD thy God? my eyes shall behold her: now she shall be trodden down as the mire of the streets.

¹⁶ The Gentiles shall see and be ashamed at all thy mighty acts: they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall become deaf. ¹⁷ They shall lick the dust like a serpent; as the serpents of the earth, they shall tremble in their holes; they shall be filled with fear of the LORD our God and shall also fear thee.

³ And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I make, said the LORD of the hosts.

³⁹ And they came and besought them, and bringing them out, asked them to depart out of the city.

⁹ Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but do lie; behold, I will constrain them to come and worship before thy feet and to know that I have loved thee.

² And all the king’s slaves that were in the king’s gate, knelt down and worshipped Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not kneel or worship before him.

¹⁰ Nevertheless, Haman refrained himself, and when he came home, he sent and called for his friends and Zeresh, his wife. ¹¹ And Haman told them of the glory of his riches and the multitude of his sons and all the things in which the king had promoted him and how he had advanced him above the princes and slaves of the king.

²¹ Now ye are certainly as they; ye have seen the torment and are afraid. ²² ¶ Did I say, Bring unto me and pay for me out of your substance ²³ and deliver me from the enemy’s hand and ransom me from the hand of the mighty?

¹³ He has put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintances are verily estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.

¹⁰ They abhor me, they distance themselves from me, and do not spare to spit in my face.

¹⁵ ¶ The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; the weakness of the poor is their poverty.

⁴ ¶ Wealth makes many friends, but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

⁶ ¶ Many will intreat the favour of the prince, but every man is a friend to him that gives. ⁷ All the brethren of the poor hate him; how much more shall his friends separate themselves from him? He shall seek their friendship and not find it.

¹³ If I had despised the right of my manslave or of my maidslave, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ what then would I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what would I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the belly also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb?

⁵ Look unto the heavens and see; and behold the heavens which are higher than thou. ⁶ If thou dost sin, what hast thou done against him? Or if thy rebellion is multiplied, what doest thou unto him?

²⁴ For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the poor in spirit; neither has he hid his face from him, but when he cried unto him, he heard.

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David. ¶ Blessed is he that understands regarding the poor; the LORD will deliver him in the day of evil. ² The LORD will preserve him and keep him alive, and he shall be blessed upon the earth, and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.

⁵ Teth A good man has mercy and lends; Jod He will govern his affairs with good judgment.

²⁴ ¶ There are those who scatter, and more is added unto them; and there are those who withhold more than is just, but come to poverty. ²⁵ ¶ The soul who is a blessing unto others shall be made fat, and he that fills shall be filled also himself.

³¹ ¶ He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he that has mercy on the poor, honours him.

⁵ ¶ Whosoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker, and he that is glad regarding the calamity of someone else shall not go unpunished.

³ ¶ When the wicked comes, then comes also contempt, and with him who dishonours, reproach.

¹⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor lends unto the LORD, and he will give him his reward.

²⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor shall never lack, but he that hides his eyes from the poor shall have many a curse.

¹ ¶ Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days. ² Give a portion to seven and even to eight, for thou dost not know what evil shall come upon the earth.

⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother? ⁸ ¶ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall gather thee. ⁹ Then shalt thou call, and thou shalt hear the LORD; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; ¹⁰ and if thou pour out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:

²⁷ Therefore, O king, approve my counsel and redeem thy sins with righteousness and thine iniquities with mercies unto the poor: behold the medicine for thy sin.

³⁴ Then shall the King say unto those on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; ³⁵ for I was hungry, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; ³⁶ naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me. ³⁷ Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee? or thirsty and give thee drink? ³⁸ When did we see thee a stranger and take thee in? or naked and clothe thee? ³⁹ Or when did we see thee sick or in prison and come unto thee? ⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, ye have done it unto me. ⁴¹ Then he shall also say unto those who shall be on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels; ⁴² for I was hungry, and ye gave me no food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; ⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick and in prison, and ye visited me not. ⁴⁴ Then they shall also answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵ Then he shall answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of my brothers, ye did it not to me. ⁴⁶ And they shall go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

³⁰ Give to everyone that asks of thee, and of the one that takes away thy goods ask them not to return them. ³¹ And as ye desire that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. ³² For if ye love those who love you, what grace shall ye have? for sinners also love those that love them. ³³ And if ye do good to those who do good to you, what grace shall ye have? for sinners also do even the same. ³⁴ And if ye lend to those of whom ye hope to receive, what grace shall ye have? for sinners also lend to sinners to receive as much again. ³⁵ But rather love ye your enemies and do good and lend, hoping for nothing again, and your reward shall be great; and ye shall be the sons of the Most High, for he is kind even unto the unthankful and to the evil. ³⁶ Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

⁹ ¶ And he spoke this parable unto some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others:

³⁵ I have showed you in all things how that so labouring, ye ought to support the weak and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

¹² that ye not become slothful, but imitators of those who by faith and patience inherit the promises.

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of this world that they might be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those that love him? ⁶ But ye have despised the poor. Do not the rich oppress you with tyranny and draw you with violence to the courts?

¹⁴ ¶ My brethren, What shall it profit though someone says that they have faith and do not have works? Shall this type of faith be able to save them? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you says unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; but ye do not give them those things which are needful for the body; what shall it profit them?

¹⁷ But whosoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother have need and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how does the charity of God abide in him? ¹⁸ My little children, let us not love in word neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth. ¹⁹ And in this we know that we are of the truth and have our hearts certified before him. ²⁰ ¶ And if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence in God; ²² and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

²⁷ And he said, Blessed be the LORD, God of my master Abraham, who has not lifted his mercy and his truth from my master, the LORD leading me in the way to the house of my master’s brethren.

⁸ But the LORD said to David, my father, Forasmuch as it was in thy heart to build a house for my name, thou didst well in that it was in thy heart;

¹⁰ Jod All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

⁷ He shall abide before God for ever; He is aware of mercy and truth which preserve him.

²⁹ Do not devise evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwells securely by thee.

¹⁷ ¶ He that is soon angry shall deal foolishly, and the man of wicked devices shall be hated.

²² ¶ Contentment is unto men to show mercy, but it is better to do it unto the poor than to the liar.

⁷ Certainly the greedy use evil measures: he devises wicked devices to ensnare the simple with lying words and to speak in judgment against the poor. ⁸ But the liberal devises liberal things; and by liberal things shall he rise.

⁷ Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses, but the grace and the truth of God came through Jesus, the Christ.

¹⁰ ¶ He that winks with the eye causes sorrow, and he that speaks foolishness shall fall.

²⁴ ¶ The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the negligent shall be under tribute.

¹⁹ ¶ He that tills his land shall be filled with bread, but he that follows after vain persons shall be filled with poverty.

³ For out of much preoccupation comes the dream, and the voice of the fool out of a multitude of words.

²⁷ Labour not for the food which perishes, but for the food which abides unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you, for him has God the Father sealed.

¹⁰ For even when we were with you, this we declared unto you, that if anyone desires not to work neither should he eat. ¹¹ For we hear that there are some who walk among you out of order, not working at all, but are busybodies. ¹² Now those that are such, we charge and exhort in our Lord Jesus Christ, that working with quietness, they eat their bread.

¹³ And reject also the idle, who have learned to wander about from house to house, and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

¹⁰ For God is not unjust to forget your work and labour of charity which ye have showed in his name, having helped the saints and helping them. ¹¹ But we desire that each one of you show the same diligence until the end for the fulfillment of your hope,

¹⁰ For he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others. ¹¹ Their inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. ¹² Nevertheless man will not abide forever in honour; he is like the beasts that are cut off. ¹³ This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

²² ¶ Though thou should bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet his foolishness will not depart from him.

¹¹ ¶ Knowledge is good with an inheritance and is the excellency of those that see the sun. ¹² For knowledge is a defence, and money is a defence; but wisdom excels in that it gives life to those that have it.

⁶ And in thy times wisdom and knowledge, and the strength of salvation shall reign: the fear of the LORD shall be his treasure.

⁹ And I say unto you, Make friends unto yourselves with the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when these fail, you may be received into eternal dwellings.

¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day; ²⁰ and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried; ²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime didst receive thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and thou art tormented.

⁵ ¶ The true witness will not lie, but the false witness will utter lies.

²¹ testifying both to the Jews and also to the Gentiles, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

²⁶ Therefore I take you to record this day that I am pure from the blood of everyone. ²⁷ For I have not refrained from declaring unto you the full counsel of God.

¹⁶ But rise and stand upon thy feet, for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen and of those things in which I will appear unto thee; ¹⁷ delivering thee from the people and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee ¹⁸ to open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and inheritance among those who are sanctified by the faith that is in me. ¹⁹ Whereupon, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision, ²⁰ but I announced first unto those of Damascus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judaea and then to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

¹ ¶ Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, listening to spirits of error and doctrines of demons; ² that in hypocrisy shall speak lies; having their conscience seared as with a hot iron; ³ they shall forbid to marry and shall command men to abstain from foods, which God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who are faithful and have known the truth.

³ ¶ knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts

⁴² If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, were not with me, surely thou would send me away now empty. God has seen my affliction and the work of my hands and rebuked thee last night.

⁷ Zain The angel of the LORD encamps round about those that fear him and delivers them. ⁸ Cheth O taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man that shall trust in him. ⁹ Teth O fear the LORD, ye his saints; for those that fear him lack nothing. ¹⁰ Jod The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, but those that seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing. ¹¹ ¶ Caph Come, ye children, hearken unto me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

⁶ ¶ Caph Surely he shall not be moved for ever; Lamed the righteous shall be in eternal remembrance. ⁷ Mem He shall not be afraid of evil rumours; Nun his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. ⁸ Samech His heart is established; he shall not be afraid, Ain until he sees his desire upon his enemies.

¹³ He will bless those that fear the LORD, both small and great. ¹⁴ The LORD shall increase his blessing upon you more and more, upon you and your sons.

⁷ ¶ Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil. ⁸ It shall be medicine to thy navel and marrow to thy bones.

²⁵ Thou shall not be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked when it comes. ²⁶ For the LORD shall be thy confidence and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

¹⁰ ¶ The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous shall run into it, and be raised up.

²³ ¶ The fear of the LORD is unto life, and he that has it shall live satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

¹⁸ It is good that thou should take hold of this; and also from the other not withdraw thy hand; for he that fears God shall come through with everything.

²⁰ ¶ Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself, as it were, for a little moment until the indignation is overpast. ²¹ For, behold, the LORD comes out of his place to visit the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth against himself: the earth also shall disclose her blood and shall no longer cover her slain.

¹¹ The LORD said, Verily it shall be well with thy remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to entreat thee well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

³⁹ and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me for ever for the good of them and of their sons after them: ⁴⁰ and I will make an eternal covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good, and I will put my fear in their hearts that they shall not depart from me.

¹⁶ Then those that feared the LORD spoke one to another, and the LORD hearkened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for those that feared the LORD and for those that think in his name. ¹⁷ And they shall be mine, said the LORD of the hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son that serves him. ¹⁸ Therefore become ye converted, and ye shall make a difference between the just and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that did not serve him.

² But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness be born, and in his wings he shall bring saving health; and ye shall go forth and jump like calves of the herd.

⁵ The pain of Sheol compassed me about: the snares of death came before me.

¹⁰ ¶ When wisdom enters into thine heart and knowledge is sweet unto thy soul, ¹¹ discretion shall preserve thee, intelligence shall keep thee ¹² to deliver thee from the evil way, from the man that speaks perversion, ¹³ who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, ¹⁴ who rejoice to do evil and delight in wicked perversion, ¹⁵ whose ways are crooked, and they are crooked in their paths; ¹⁶ to deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger who flatters with her words, ¹⁷ who forsakes the prince of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God. ¹⁸ Therefore her house inclines unto death, and her paths unto the dead.

¹⁴ ¶ The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

⁵ ¶ Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse; he that keeps his soul shall be far from them.

²⁶ and I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands are bonds; whosoever pleases God shall escape from her, but the sinner shall be held prisoner in her.

⁶ And he said unto me, It is done. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is thirsty of the fountain of the water of life freely.

¹² But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew, so much that they loathed the sons of Israel.

²² Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall give them their lives.

²⁰ ¶ Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry. ²¹ And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines and unto the border of Egypt, and they brought presents and served Solomon all the days of his life.

²⁷ And the sons of Israel were numbered and took provisions and went against them; and the sons of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the land.

³² In those days the LORD began to cut Israel short, and Hazael smote them in all the borders of Israel, ³³ from the Jordan toward the rising of the sun, all the land of Gilead, of Gad, of Reuben, and of Manasses, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, to Gilead and to Bashan.

⁷ Neither did he leave of the people to Jehoahaz but fifty horsemen and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen, for the king of Syria had destroyed them, and had made them like dust to be tread upon.

³ (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

⁸ Grow in wisdom, and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honour when thou hast embraced her.

¹¹ ¶ The discretion of a man defers his anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

²⁴ ¶ Do not meddle with an angry man, and with a furious man thou shalt not go: ²⁵ Lest thou learn his ways and get a snare to thy soul.

⁸ ¶ Do not go forth hastily to strive lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof when thy neighbour has put thee to shame.

²⁸ ¶ The man whose spirit has no restraint is like a city that is broken down and without walls.

⁶ Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich are seated in a low place.

¹⁹ ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; therefore he spoke, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was customary to be heated. ²⁰ And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. ²¹ Then these men were bound in their coats, their undergarments, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. ²² Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. ²³ And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. ²⁴ Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste and spoke and said unto his counsellors, Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. ²⁵ He answered and said, Behold, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

¹⁶ ¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth and sent forth and killed all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had understood of the wise men.

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and ye shall find rest for your souls.

⁴ ¶ Charity suffers long and is benign; charity envies not; charity does nothing without due reason, is not puffed up, ⁵ is not injurious, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil,

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, modest, benevolent, full of mercy and of good fruits, not judgmental, unfeigned. ¹⁸ And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace unto those that make peace.

² It is certain that wrath kills the foolish man, and envy consumes the covetous one.

¹⁰ Resh The wicked shall see it and be furious; Schin he shall gnash with his teeth and waste away: Tau The desire of the wicked shall perish.

⁸⁰ ¶ Let my heart be perfect in thy statutes that I not be ashamed.

⁸ It shall be medicine to thy navel and marrow to thy bones.

²³ Above all else, guard thy heart; for out of it flows the issues of life.

⁴ ¶ The virtuous woman is a crown to her husband, but she that makes ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

²² ¶ A joyful heart shall do good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

⁹ And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt, but God was with him

²⁹ being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

⁷ For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of strength and of love and of temperance.

⁵ Do ye think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?

¹³ If I had despised the right of my manslave or of my maidslave, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ what then would I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what would I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the belly also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

⁵ For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now I will arise, saith the LORD; I will set in safety the one whom the wicked one has ensnared.

²¹ ¶ The sinner despises his neighbour, but he that has mercy on the poor is blessed.

² ¶ The rich and poor meet together; the LORD is the maker of them all.

¹⁶ ¶ He that oppresses the poor to increase his riches and who gives to the rich shall surely come to want.

²² ¶ Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither destroy the destitute in judgment: ²³ For the LORD will judge their cause and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

⁸ If thou seest violence unto the poor and the extortion of rights and justice in a province, do not marvel at the matter, for height is looking upon height; and there is one higher than they.

⁸ for the poor ye always have with you, but ye shall not always have me.

⁷ ¶ Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith and in word and in knowledge and in all diligence and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. ⁸ I speak not as commanding, but by occasion of the diligence of others and to prove the sincerity of your charity. ⁹ For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor that ye through his poverty might be enriched.

¹⁸ I have waited for thy saving health, O LORD.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet I will trust in him; but I will defend my ways before him.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world.

²⁵ For I know that my redeemer lives and that he shall rise at the latter day over the dust; ²⁶ and afterward from this, my stricken skin and from my own flesh, I must see God: ²⁷ whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another, though my kidneys be consumed within me.

²⁰ Terrors shall take hold on him as waters; a whirlwind shall carry him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind shall take him away, and he shall depart; the storm shall catch him up out of his place. ²² For God shall cast down on him and not spare; he would attempt to flee out of his hand.

¹¹ Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; in thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

¹⁵ As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness.

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff shall comfort me.

³⁷ Schin Mark the perfect, and behold the upright, for the end of each one of them is peace.

⁹ Before your pots can feel the fire of the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.

¹⁵ Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.

¹⁶ For a just man falls seven times and rises up again, but the wicked shall fall into evil.

²⁶ This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has audited thy kingdom and finished it. ²⁷ TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting. ²⁸ PERES; Thy kingdom has been broken and is given to the Medes and Persians. ²⁹ Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold about his neck and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. ³⁰ ¶ That same night Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans was slain.

²⁹ Lord, now let thy slave depart in peace, according to thy word,

²¹ ¶ Then Jesus said again unto them, I am going away, and ye shall seek me, but ye shall die in your sins; where I go, ye shall not be able to come.

²⁴ Therefore I said unto you that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye do not believe that I AM, ye shall die in your sins.

²² What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much meekness the vessels of wrath, prepared for death,

⁵⁵ O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory? ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁵⁸ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brothers, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead;

⁸ We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

²¹ ¶ For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.

²³ For I am in a strait between the two, having a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is far better:

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

¹⁸ And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work and will save me for his heavenly kingdom, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

¹³ ¶ And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on; Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them.

²³ ¶ The sane man conceals his wisdom: but the heart of fools proclaims foolishness.

¹⁶ ¶ Every sane man works according to wisdom: but the fool shall manifest his folly.

² ¶ The tongue of the wise shall adorn wisdom, but the mouth of fools shall speak foolishness.

²⁸ ¶ The heart of the righteous studies to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.

¹¹ ¶ The fool gives full rein to his spirit, but the wise man in the end will bring it into rest.

³ Even when the fool walks by the way, he lacks prudence, and he says unto every one that he is a fool.

⁶ Keep them, therefore, and do them, for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. ⁷ For what nation is there so great who has God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? ⁸ And what nation is there so great that has statutes and rights so just as all this law, which I set before you this day?

¹ ¶ And it shall come to pass if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God to keep and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all the Gentiles of the earth; ² and all these blessings shall come upon thee and overtake thee when thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. ³ Blessed shalt thou be in the city and blessed shalt thou be in the field. ⁴ Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy ground and the fruit of thy beasts, the increase of thy cows, and the flocks of thy sheep. ⁵ Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. ⁶ Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out. ⁷ The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face; they shall come out against thee one way and flee before thee seven ways. ⁸ The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee. ⁹ The LORD shall confirm thee as his holy people, as he has sworn unto thee, when thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God and walk in his ways. ¹⁰ And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of thee. ¹¹ And the LORD shall cause thee to have good in abundance in the fruit of thy body and in the fruit of thy beasts and in the fruit of thy ground, upon the land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers to give thee. ¹² The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven, to give the rain unto thy land in its season and to bless all the work of thine hand. And thou shalt lend unto many Gentiles, and thou shalt not borrow. ¹³ And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail, and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath, when thou shalt hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to keep them and to fulfill them. ¹⁴ And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. ¹⁵ ¶ And it shall come to pass if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep, to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee today, that all these curses shall come upon thee and overtake thee. ¹⁶ Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. ¹⁷ Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store. ¹⁸ Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy cows and the flocks of thy sheep. ¹⁹ Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out. ²⁰ The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, destruction and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand to do, until thou art destroyed and perish quickly because of the wickedness of thy doings, by which thou hast forsaken me. ²¹ The LORD shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee until he has consumed thee from off the land into which thou dost enter to inherit it. ²² The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption and with a fever and with an inflammation and with an extreme burning and with the sword and with blight and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish. ²³ And thy heavens which are over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. ²⁴ The LORD shall make the rain of thy land dust and ashes; from the heavens it shall come down upon thee, until thou art destroyed. ²⁵ The LORD shall cause thee to be smitten before thine enemies; thou shalt go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them and shalt be an object of trembling unto all the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ And thy carcase shall be food unto all fowls of the air and unto the beasts of the earth, and there shall be no one to frighten them away. ²⁷ The LORD will smite thee with the boil of Egypt and with the hemorrhoids and with the scab and with the itch, of which thou canst not be healed. ²⁸ The LORD shall smite thee with madness and blindness and astonishment of heart. ²⁹ And thou shalt grope at noonday as the blind grope in the darkness, and thou shalt not be prospered in thy ways; and thou shalt only be oppressed and spoiled all the days, and there shall be no one to save thee. ³⁰ Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein; thou shalt plant a vineyard and shalt not gather the grapes thereof. ³¹ Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face and shall not be restored to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have no one to rescue them. ³² Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all the day long; and there shall be no strength in thine hand. ³³ The fruit of thy land and all thy labours shall a people which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt only be oppressed and crushed all the days. ³⁴ So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. ³⁵ The LORD shall smite thee in the knees and in the legs with an evil boil that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head. ³⁶ The LORD shall bring thee and thy king which thou shalt set over thee unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, and there shalt thou serve other gods, even wood and stone. ³⁷ And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword among all nations where the LORD shall carry thee away. ³⁸ Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field and shalt gather but little in, for the locust shall consume it. ³⁹ Thou shalt plant vineyards and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worms shall eat them. ⁴⁰ Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy borders, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall fall. ⁴¹ Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity. ⁴² All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locust consume. ⁴³ The stranger that is in the midst of thee shall get up above thee very high, and thou shalt come down very low. ⁴⁴ He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him; he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. ⁴⁵ ¶ Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee and shall pursue thee and overtake thee until thou art destroyed because thou shalt not have attended unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee; ⁴⁶ and they shall be in thee for a sign and for a wonder, and in thy seed for ever. ⁴⁷ Because thou didst not serve the LORD thy God with joyfulness and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; ⁴⁸ therefore, thou shalt serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger and in thirst and in nakedness and in lack of all things; and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck until he has destroyed thee. ⁴⁹ The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand, ⁵⁰ a nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old nor show favour to the young; ⁵¹ and he shall eat the fruit of thy beast and the fruit of thy land until thou art destroyed, which also shall not leave thee either grain, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy cows or flocks of thy sheep until he has destroyed thee. ⁵² And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates until thy high and fenced walls come down, in which thou dost trust, throughout all thy land; and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God has given thee. ⁵³ And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God has given thee, in the siege and in the straitness with which thine enemies shall distress thee. ⁵⁴ The man that is tender among you and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother and toward the wife of his bosom and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave, ⁵⁵ so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat, because he shall have nothing left him in the siege and in the straitness with which thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. ⁵⁶ The tender and delicate woman among you who would not venture to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom and toward her son and toward her daughter ⁵⁷ and toward her young one that comes out from between her feet and toward her children which she shall bear, for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness with which thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates, ⁵⁸ if thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book that thou may fear this glorious and fearful name; I AM thy God. ⁵⁹ Then the LORD will augment thy plagues wonderfully, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues and of long continuance, and evil sicknesses and of long continuance. ⁶⁰ Moreover, he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of, and they shall cleave unto thee. ⁶¹ Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, the LORD will bring upon thee until thou art destroyed. ⁶² And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude, because thou would not hear the voice of the LORD thy God. ⁶³ And it shall come to pass that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to cause you to perish and to destroy you; and ye shall be plucked from off the land into which thou dost enter in to inherit it. ⁶⁴ And the LORD shall scatter thee among all the peoples from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. ⁶⁵ Neither shalt thou find rest among these Gentiles, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest; but there the LORD shall give thee a trembling heart and failing of eyes and sorrow of soul; ⁶⁶ and thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night and shalt have no assurance of thy life. ⁶⁷ In the morning thou shalt say, I wish it were evening, and in the evening thou shalt say, I wish it were morning! For the fear of thine heart with which thou shalt fear and for that which thine eyes shall see. ⁶⁸ And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again in ships by the way of which I spoke unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again; and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for menslaves and womenslaves, and there shall be no one to buy you.

¹⁸ Peradventure there shall be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those Gentiles; peradventure there shall be among you a root that bears poison and wormwood; ¹⁹ and it shall be, when that one hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of my heart, to add drunkenness to thirst. ²⁰ The LORD will not forgive him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven. ²¹ And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law. ²² So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up after you, and the stranger that shall come from a far land shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which the LORD has laid upon it, ²³ and that the whole land thereof is brimstone and salt and burning, that it is not sown, nor shall it produce anything, nor shall any grass grow therein, like in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and in his wrath; ²⁴ even all Gentiles shall say, Why has the LORD done thus unto this land? What means the heat of this great anger? ²⁵ Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt; ²⁶ for they went and served other gods and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not and who had not given anything unto them. ²⁷ Therefore, the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book. ²⁸ And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation and cast them into another land, as it is today.

⁶ ¶ For Joshua had let the people go, and the sons of Israel had each gone unto his inheritance to possess the land. ⁷ And the people had served the LORD all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua who had seen all the great works of the LORD that he had done with Israel. ⁸ And Joshua, the son of Nun, the slave of the LORD, died, being one hundred and ten years old. ⁹ And they buried him within the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres in the mount of Ephraim on the north side of the mount of Gaash. ¹⁰ And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers, and there arose another generation after them which did not know the LORD nor the work which he had done to Israel. ¹¹ And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baalim. ¹² And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them and provoked the LORD to anger. ¹³ And they forsook the LORD and served Baal and Ashtaroth. ¹⁴ And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

³⁴ the fruitful land into salt flats, because of the wickedness of those that dwell therein.

² Go and cry out in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD: I remember thee, the mercy of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou didst go after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. ³ Israel was holiness unto the LORD and the firstfruits of his increase; all that devour him shall be found guilty; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD. ⁴ Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel; ⁵ thus hath the LORD said, What iniquity have your fathers found in me that they are gone far from me and have walked after vanity and are become vain? ⁶ Neither did they say, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through and where no man dwelt? ⁷ And I brought you into a plentiful country to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination. ⁸ The priests did not say, Where is the LORD? and those that handled the law did not know me; the pastors also rebelled against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal and walked after things that do not profit. ⁹ ¶ Therefore I will yet enter into judgment with you, saith the LORD, and I will plead with your children’s children. ¹⁰ For pass over the isles of Chittim and see; and send unto Kedar and consider diligently and see if there be such a thing. ¹¹ Has a nation changed their gods? Even though they are not gods. But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. ¹² Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this; and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, said the LORD. ¹³ For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters to hew them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. ¹⁴ ¶ Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn slave? Why has he been given over as a prey? ¹⁵ The young lions roared upon him and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are deserted without inhabitant. ¹⁶ Even the sons of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head. ¹⁷ Could this not have come upon you peradventure because thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? ¹⁸ And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt? to drink the waters of the Nile? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria? to drink the waters of the river Eufrates? ¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall chastise thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee; know therefore and see how evil and bitter it is, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God and that my fear is lacking in thee, saith the Lord GOD of the hosts. ²⁰ ¶ For of old time I have broken thy yoke and burst thy bands; and thou didst say, I will not serve sin. With all this, upon every high hill and under every green tree thou dost wander, playing the harlot. ²¹ Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, a seed of Truth, all of her; how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? ²² For though thou wash thee with nitre and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is sealed before me, saith the Lord GOD. ²³ How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? See thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways; ²⁴ a wild ass used to the wilderness that breaths according to the desire of her soul; from her lust, who shall stop her? All those that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her. ²⁵ Withhold thy foot from being unshod and thy throat from thirst; but thou didst say, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.

¹ ¶ Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, ² Son of man, notify Jerusalem of her abominations ³ and say, Thus hath the Lord GOD said concerning Jerusalem: Thy habitation and thy race was of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite and thy mother a Hittite. ⁴ And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all. ⁵ No eye pitied thee, to do any of these unto thee, to have mercy upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field with little value given to thy life, in the day that thou wast born. ⁶ ¶ I passed by thee and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, and I said unto thee, In thy blood thou shalt live; yea, I said unto thee, In thy blood thou shalt live. ⁷ In ten thousands, as the grass of the field, have I placed thee, and thou wast increased and made great, and thou art come to be adorned with excellent ornaments; thy breasts were fashioned, and thy hair is grown; but thou wast naked and bare. ⁸ And I passed by thee and looked upon thee; behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my mantle over thee and covered thy shame; and I gave thee an oath and entered into a covenant with thee, said the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine; ⁹ and I washed thee with water and washed away thy blood from upon thee, and I anointed thee with oil. ¹⁰ I clothed thee also with broidered work and shod thee with badgers’ skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I clothed thee with silk. ¹¹ I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy arms and a chain on thy neck. ¹² And I put nose rings upon thy nostrils and earrings in thine ears and a diadem of beauty upon thine head. ¹³ Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen and silk and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour of wheat and honey and oil: and thou wast made exceeding beautiful, and thou hast prospered even until thou hast reigned. ¹⁴ And thy renown went forth among the Gentiles for thy beauty; for it was perfect because of my beauty which I placed upon thee, said the Lord GOD. ¹⁵ ¶ But thou didst trust in thine own beauty and didst play the harlot because of thy renown and didst pour out thy fornications on every one that passed by; thou wert his. ¹⁶ And of thy garments thou didst take and make altars of divers colours and play the harlot thereupon; the like shall not come again, neither shall it be so. ¹⁷ Thou hast taken likewise the vessels of thy beauty of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee and made to thyself images of men and didst commit whoredom with them ¹⁸ And thou didst take thy garments of many colours and cover them; and thou hast set my oil and my incense before them. ¹⁹ My bread also which I had given thee; the fine flour and the oil and the honey with which I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour; and thus it was, said the Lord GOD. ²⁰ Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these thou hast sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter, ²¹ that thou hast sacrificed my children and given them over to them that they might cause them to pass through the fire unto them? ²² And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms hast thou not remembered the days of thy youth when thou wast naked and bare? Thou wast polluted in thy blood. ²³ And it came to pass after all thy wickedness (woe, woe unto thee! said the Lord GOD) ²⁴ that thou hast also built unto thee a high place and hast made thee an altar in every street. ²⁵ Thou hast built thy altar at every head of every way and hast made thy beauty abominable and hast opened thy thighs to every one that passed by and multiplied thy whoredoms. ²⁶ Thou hast also committed fornication with the sons of Egypt, thy neighbours, great of flesh, and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger. ²⁷ Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee and have diminished thy liberty and delivered thee unto the will of those that hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of thy lewd way. ²⁸ Thou hast played the whore also with the sons of Assyria because thou wast insatiable; thou hast played the harlot with them and yet could not be satisfied. ²⁹ Thou hast likewise multiplied thy fornication in the land of Canaan and of the Chaldeans, and yet thou wast not satisfied with this. ³⁰ How inconsistent is thy heart, said the Lord GOD, having done all these things, the work of a powerful harlot: ³¹ building thine altars at the head of every way and making thine altars in every street! And thou hast not been as a harlot in that thou scornest hire, ³² but as a wife that commits adultery, who takes strangers instead of her husband! ³³ They give gifts to all whores, but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers and givest them offerings that they may come unto thee on every side for thy whoredom. ³⁴ And in thee it is to the contrary from other women in thy whoredoms; and after thee, there shall never be whoredom like unto thine because in giving thy gifts when gifts are not given unto thee, it has been backwards. ³⁵ ¶ Therefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD: ³⁶ Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Because thy nakedness has been uncovered, and thy confusion has been manifested to thy lovers in thy whoredoms and to the idols of thy abominations and in the blood of thy children which thou didst give unto them; ³⁷ therefore, behold that I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure and all those that thou hast loved, with all those that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee and will uncover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness. ³⁸ And I will judge thee by the laws regarding women who commit adultery and those that shed blood; and I will give thee away in blood of fury and of jealousy. ³⁹ And I will deliver thee into their hand, and they shall destroy thy high place and shall break down thy altars; they shall strip thee also of thy clothes and shall take the vessels of thy glory and shall leave thee naked and bare. ⁴⁰ They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones and thrust thee through with their swords. ⁴¹ And they shall burn thine houses with fire and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women; and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more. ⁴² So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet and will no longer be angry. ⁴³ Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth but hast provoked me to anger in all this; therefore, behold I also have recompensed thy way upon thine head, said the Lord GOD; for thou hast not even thought regarding all thine abominations. ⁴⁴ ¶ Behold, every one that makes proverbs shall make this proverb regarding thee, saying: As is the mother so is her daughter. ⁴⁵ Thou art thy mother’s daughter that discarded her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters who discarded their husbands and their children: your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite. ⁴⁶ And thine elder sister is Samaria with her daughters that dwell at thy left hand; and thy younger sister that dwells at thy right hand is Sodom with her daughters. ⁴⁷ Yet thou hast not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations; but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways. ⁴⁸ As I live, said the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister has never done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. ⁴⁹ Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the afflicted and needy. ⁵⁰ And they filled themselves with arrogance and committed abomination before me, and when I saw it, I took them away. ⁵¹ Neither has Samaria committed half of thy sins, but thou hast multiplied thy abominations more than they and hast justified thy sisters with all thy abominations which thou hast done. ⁵² Thou also, who hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they; they are more righteous than thou; be thou confounded also and bear thy shame in that thou hast justified thy sisters. ⁵³ When I shall turn their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then I will release the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them: ⁵⁴ that thou may bear thine own shame and may be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them. ⁵⁵ When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters shall return to their first state, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their first state, thou and thy daughters shall return to your first state. ⁵⁶ Sodom, thy sister was not mentioned by thy mouth in the time of thy pride, ⁵⁷ before thy wickedness discovered itself, as at the time of the reproach of the daughters of Syria and of all the daughters of the Philistines round about, who despise thee in everything. ⁵⁸ Thou hast borne thy lewdness and thine abominations, said the LORD. ⁵⁹ For thus hath the Lord GOD said: Will I deal with thee even as thou hast done, despising the oath to invalidate the covenant? ⁶⁰ ¶ Nevertheless I will remember my covenant that I made with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will confirm unto thee an everlasting covenant. ⁶¹ Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant. ⁶² And I will confirm my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: ⁶³ that thou may remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, said the Lord GOD.

¹ ¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, ² Now, thou son of man, wilt thou not judge, wilt thou not judge the city that spills innocent blood and cause her to know all her abominations? ³ Then thou shalt say, Thus hath the Lord GOD said, City that sheds blood in the midst of thyself, that thy time may come, and that has made idols against thyself to defile thyself! ⁴ In thy blood that thou hast shed thou hast sinned and hast defiled thyself with thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near and art come even unto thy years; therefore I have given thee in reproach unto the Gentiles, and in shame unto all the countries. ⁵ Those that are near and those that are far from thee shall mock thee, who art infamous and much vexed. ⁶ Behold, the princes of Israel, each one according to their power, were in thee to shed blood. ⁷ In thee they have despised father and mother; in the midst of thee they have dealt by oppression with the stranger; in thee they have vexed the fatherless and the widow. ⁸ Thou hast despised my holy things and hast profaned my sabbaths. ⁹ In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood; and in thee they eat upon the mountains; in the midst of thee they commit lewdness. ¹⁰ In thee they have discovered their fathers’ nakedness; in thee they have forced the unclean menstruous woman. ¹¹ And one has committed abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law; and another in thee has forced his sister, his father’s daughter. ¹² In thee they have taken bribes to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion and hast forgotten me, said the Lord GOD. ¹³ Behold, therefore I have smitten my hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made and at thy blood which has been in the midst of thee. ¹⁴ Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken it and will do it. ¹⁵ And I will scatter thee among the Gentiles and disperse thee in the countries and will consume thy filthiness out of thee. ¹⁶ And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thyself in the sight of the Gentiles, and thou shalt know that I am the LORD. ¹⁷ ¶ And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, ¹⁸ Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross; they are all brass and tin and iron and lead in the midst of the furnace; they are become the dross of silver. ¹⁹ Therefore thus hath the Lord GOD said: Because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. ²⁰ As they gather silver and brass and iron and lead and tin into the midst of the furnace to blow the fire upon it to melt it, so will I gather you in my anger and in my fury, and I will cause you to rest, and melt you. ²¹ I will gather you and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof. ²² As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the LORD have poured out my fury upon you. ²³ ¶ And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

¹ ¶ When Ephraim spoke everyone feared, he was exalted in Israel; but he was found guilty in Baal and died.

⁴ A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will not know a wicked person. ⁵ Whosoever secretly slanders his neighbour, I will cut off; he that has a high look and a proud heart I will not suffer. ⁶ My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; he that walks in the way of perfection, he shall serve me. ⁷ He that works deceit shall not dwell within my house; he that tells lies shall not tarry in my sight. ⁸ I will early destroy all the wicked of the land, that I may cut off all the workers of iniquity from the city of the LORD.

⁵ ¶ He that gathers in summer is a wise son, but he that sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame.

² ¶ A prudent slave shall have rule over a son that causes shame and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

¹² ¶ The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion, but his favour is as dew upon the grass. ¹³ ¶ A foolish son is a pain unto his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

²⁶ ¶ He that steals from his father and chases away his mother is a son that causes shame and brings reproach.

⁸ ¶ A king that sits in the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.

²⁶ ¶ A wise king scatters the wicked and brings the wheel over them.

¹¹ ¶ He that loves pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

⁵ Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

¹² ¶ Of the ruler who hearkens unto the lying word, all his ministers are evil.

⁴⁵ Who then is the faithful and prudent slave, whom his lord has made ruler over his household to give them food in due season? ⁴⁶ Blessed is that slave whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. ⁴⁷ Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. ⁴⁸ But and if that evil slave shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming, ⁴⁹ and shall begin to smite his fellowslaves and even to eat and drink with the drunken, ⁵⁰ the lord of that slave shall come in a day when he does not look for him and in an hour that he is not aware of ⁵¹ and shall cut him off and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²¹ His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful slave; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

⁴² And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward whom his lord shall make ruler over his household to give them their portion of food in due season? ⁴³ Blessed is that slave whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. ⁴⁴ Of a truth I say unto you that he will make him ruler over all that he has. ⁴⁵ But and if that slave shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming, and shall begin to beat the menslaves and maids and to eat and drink and to be drunken, ⁴⁶ the lord of that slave will come in a day when he does not look for him and at an hour when he is not aware and will cut him off and will appoint him his portion with the unfaithful. ⁴⁷ And that slave who knew his lord’s will and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. ⁴⁸ But he that knew not and did commit things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required; and to whom much was committed, more will be asked of him.
