¹ ¶ Why, seeing that times are not hidden from the Almighty, do those that know him not see his days? ² Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks and feed thereof. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge. ⁴ They turn the needy out of the way; and all the poor of the earth hide themselves from them. ⁵ Behold, as wild asses in the desert, they go forth to their work, rising early for a prey; the wilderness yields food for them and for their children. ⁶ In the field they reap their fodder, and the wicked gather the vintage that is not theirs. ⁷ They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the floods of the mountains and embrace the rock for want of a covering. ⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge of the poor. ¹⁰ They cause the naked to go without clothing, and they take away the sheaves from the hungry. ¹¹ They press oil within their walls and tread their winepresses and suffer thirst. ¹² Men groan from out of the city, and the souls of the dead cry out; yet God did not hinder them. ¹³ ¶ They are among those that rebel against the light; they have never known its ways nor abided in its paths. ¹⁴ The murderer rises with the light, kills the poor and the needy, and in the night is as a thief. ¹⁵ The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me; and disguises his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime; they do not know the light. ¹⁷ For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death; if they are known, the terrors of the shadow of death come over them. ¹⁸ ¶ They are swift upon the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth; they never come by the way of the vineyards. ¹⁹ Drought and heat consume the snow waters; so does Sheol consume those who have sinned. ²⁰ The Merciful One shall forget them; the worm shall feed sweetly on them; they shall never be remembered again; and iniquity shall be broken as a tree. ²¹ He afflicted the barren woman that did not conceive and never did good unto the widow. ²² He furthered the violent with his power; he did not lend to anyone in his life. ²³ If he gave credit to some to take them over, his eyes were upon their ways. ²⁴ They were exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all others and cut off as the tops of the heads of grain. ²⁵ And if it is not so now, who will make me a liar or reduce my speech to nothing?

⁴ For yet in seven days, I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every substance that I have made I will destroy from off the face of the earth.

¹⁷ And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do,

²⁰ And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very grievous; ²¹ I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

¹⁰ And those that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, O LORD, hast not forsaken those that seek thee.

¹⁵ My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those that persecute me.

¹⁰ Extend thy mercy unto those that know thee and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.

¹⁶ I shall meditate that I might understand this; it is very hard for me to see. ¹⁷ When I come into the sanctuary of God, then I shall understand their end. ¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall. ¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors.

¹⁷ I said in my heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time determined to judge every will and regarding everything that is done.

⁶ ¶ Because for every will there is time and judgment, because the evil of man is great upon him, ⁷ for he does not know that which shall be; nor when it shall be. Who will teach it to him?

¹¹ ¶ I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of prudence, nor yet grace to men of eloquence; but time and chance happens to them all. ¹² For man also does not know his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net and as the birds that are caught in the snare, so are the sons of men snared in the evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them.

¹² For the day of the LORD of the hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

²² The small one shall be as a thousand; the youngest as a strong nation; I the LORD will hasten it in its time.

¹ ¶ Righteous art thou, O LORD, even though I dispute with thee: even so, I will speak judgments with thee; Why does the way of the wicked prosper? All those that completely rebel against thee have peace. ² Thou hast planted them, and they have taken root: they grow, and they bring forth fruit; thou art near in their mouth and far from their kidneys. ³ But thou, O LORD, dost know me; thou hast seen me and tried my heart toward thee; pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and mark them for the day of slaughter.

¹⁰ But this day shall be unto the Lord GOD of the hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries; and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiated and made drunk with their blood; for it shall be a slaughter unto the Lord GOD of the hosts in the north country by the river Euphrates.

²¹ and it is he that changes the times and the opportunities; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom unto the wise and knowledge unto those that know understanding:

³⁸ For as they were in the days before the flood, eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

²² For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. ²³ But woe unto those that are with child and to those that give suck in those days! For there shall be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. ²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword and shall be led away captive into all nations, and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

³ And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

⁷ And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put under his authority only.

²⁶ and has made of one blood all the lineage of men to dwell on all the face of the earth and has determined the seasons (which he has limited) and the bounds of their habitation;

⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

¹ ¶ But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

¹ ¶ Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, listening to spirits of error and doctrines of demons;

¹⁵ who in his time shall show the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

³ ¶ and in covetousness they shall make merchandise of you with feigned words, upon whom the condemnation from a long time ago does not delay, and their perdition does not sleep.

⁷ but the heavens, which are now, and the earth are conserved by the same word, kept unto the fire in the day of judgment and of perdition of the ungodly men. ⁸ ¶ But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day before the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years are as one day.

¹⁴ ¶ Thou shalt not reduce thy neighbour’s border, which those of old time have marked in thine inheritance, which thou shalt possess in the land that the LORD thy God gives thee to inherit.

¹⁷ Cursed is he that reduces his neighbour’s border. And all the people shall say, Amen.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans {Heb. those of Sheba} fell upon them and took them away; they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans made three bands and fell upon the camels and have carried them away and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

⁵ The hungry shall eat up his harvest, and even take it out from among the thorns, and the thirsty shall drink up their substance.

²⁸ ¶ Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

¹⁰ ¶ Do not remove the old landmark, and do not enter into the inheritance of the fatherless:

¹⁰ The princes of Judah were like those that move the boundaries; therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.

⁶ No man shall take the lower or the upper millstone for a pledge, for he takes a man’s life to pledge.

¹⁰ When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to take his pledge. ¹¹ Thou shalt stand outside, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring the pledge out unto thee. ¹² And if the man is poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge. ¹³ Without fail thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goes down that he may sleep in his own clothing and bless thee, and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.

¹⁷ Thou shalt not twist the rights of the stranger nor of the fatherless nor take a widow’s clothing for a pledge, ¹⁸ but thou shalt remember that thou wast a slave in Egypt, and the LORD thy God ransomed thee from there; therefore, I command thee to do this thing. ¹⁹ When thou doest reap thy harvest in thy field and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to bring it; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, or for the widow, that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands. ²⁰ When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. ²¹ When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.

³ Behold, here I am; witness against me before the LORD and before his anointed. If I have taken anyone’s ox or if I have taken anyone’s ass or if I have defrauded anyone or if I have oppressed anyone or if I have received a bribe {Heb. ransom} from anyone to blind my eyes, I will restore it you.

⁶ For thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof;

¹⁴ The murderer rises with the light, kills the poor and the needy, and in the night is as a thief.

¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him.

²⁵ Did I not weep for the one that was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the needy?

¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David. ¶ Blessed is he that understands regarding the poor; the LORD will deliver him in the day of evil.

¹⁶ Because he did not remember to show mercy but persecuted the man who is poor in spirit and destitute and broken in heart, that he might slay him.

¹⁶ ¶ He that oppresses the poor to increase his riches and who gives to the rich shall surely come to want.

¹² ¶ When the righteous rejoice, there is great glory, but when the wicked rise, the sane man hides himself.

²⁸ ¶ When the wicked rise, sane men hide themselves; but when they perish, the righteous multiply.

¹⁴ There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their molars as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the destitute from among men.

² to turn aside the poor from right judgment and to take away the right from the afflicted of my people that widows may be their prey and that they may rob the fatherless!

¹² oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore the pledge, or lifts up his eyes to the idols, or makes an abomination,

¹⁸ As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, even he shall die for his iniquity.

²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression and exercised robbery and have done violence unto the poor and needy; they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

⁷ desiring that there be dust of the earth upon the head of the poor, and to twist the way of the humble: and the man and his father have gone in unto the same maid, profaning my holy name:

⁴ ¶ Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, and cut off the poor of the land, ⁵ saying, When the month is over, we will sell the wheat; and after the sabbath day we will open the storehouse of bread, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit; ⁶ that we may buy the poor for money and the needy for a pair of shoes and sell the refuse of the wheat.

¹ ¶ Woe unto those that devise iniquity and fabricate evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they put it into effect because they have power in their hands. ² And they coveted fields and stole them, and houses and took them away; so they oppressed the man and his house, even the man and his heritage.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts. ⁵ Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton; ye have refreshed your hearts, as in the day of slaughter of sacrifices. ⁶ Ye have condemned and murdered the just, and he does not resist you.

¹² And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

⁴⁰ and by thy sword shalt thou live and shalt serve thy brother; yet there shall be a time when thou shalt have dominion, and thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.

⁶ ¶ The tents of robbers are at ease, and those that provoke God and those who carry gods in their hands live secure.

⁵ Who freed the wild ass, and who loosed its bands? ⁶ Unto whom I made a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in the salty land. ⁷ He laughs at the multitude of the city, neither does he hearken to the voice of the exactor of tribute.

²³ Man goes forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.

¹⁶ For they do not sleep, unless they have done evil; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause someone to fall.

²⁴ a wild ass used to the wilderness that breaths according to the desire of her soul; from her lust, who shall stop her? All those that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

⁶ For they have made ready their heart like an oven while they lie in wait; their baker sleeps all night; in the morning it burns as a flaming fire.

⁹ For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass thinking only of himself; Ephraim has hired lovers.

³ Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they do not leave a bone for tomorrow.

²⁸ ¶ Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment, and it was early; and they themselves did not go into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the passover.

¹² ¶ And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together and they vowed under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

³³ The fruit of thy land and all thy labours shall a people which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt only be oppressed and crushed all the days.

⁵¹ and he shall eat the fruit of thy beast and the fruit of thy land until thou art destroyed, which also shall not leave thee either grain, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy cows or flocks of thy sheep until he has destroyed thee.

³ For when those of Israel had sown, the Midianites would come up and the Amalekites and the sons of the east. They would come up against them ⁴ and encamp against them and destroy the fruits of the earth as far as Gaza, and they would leave nothing to eat in Israel neither sheep nor ox nor ass. ⁵ For they would come up with their livestock and their tents in a great multitude like locusts, for there was no number in them nor in their camels, and they would enter into the land destroying it. ⁶ And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD.

¹⁵ Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with the oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink the wine.

⁴⁰ By day the drought consumed me, and by night, the frost; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.

²⁶ If thou at all take thy neighbour’s clothing as a pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him before the sun goes down; ²⁷ for only that is his covering, it is his clothing to cover his flesh, in which he must sleep; and it shall come to pass, when he cries unto me, that I will hear, for I am merciful.

⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother?

³¹ Then the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} had rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria and were edified, walking in the fear of the Lord, and with the comfort of the Holy Spirit they were multiplied.

² ¶ I sleep, but my heart watches for the voice of my beloved that knocks at the door, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.

⁵ He Those that did feed delicately are made desolate in the streets; those that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy); they wandered in deserts and in mountains and in dens and caves of the earth.

¹ ¶ Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried unto Elisha, saying, Thy slave, my husband, is dead; and thou knowest that thy slave feared the LORD; and the creditor is come to take my two sons to be his slaves.

⁵ Yet now, given that the flesh of our brethren is as our flesh and their sons as our sons, behold, we subject our sons and our daughters to slavery, and there are some of our daughters in bondage already; neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

⁷ desiring that there be dust of the earth upon the head of the poor, and to twist the way of the humble: and the man and his father have gone in unto the same maid, profaning my holy name: ⁸ and they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by any altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat, ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them. ¹² For I have known of your many rebellions and your great sins that afflict the just and take a ransom and turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

⁴ Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treads out the grain.

¹³ Woe unto him that builds his house and not in righteousness and his chambers and not in judgment, using his neighbour’s service without wages and not giving him the wages of his work!

¹³ And the Egyptians made the sons of Israel serve with rigor, ¹⁴ and they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, making mortar and brick and in all manner of service in the field; all their service, in which they made them serve, was with rigor.

²³ ¶ And it came to pass in process of time that the king of Egypt died, and the sons of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God from their bondage. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

²⁷ for only that is his covering, it is his clothing to cover his flesh, in which he must sleep; and it shall come to pass, when he cries unto me, that I will hear, for I am merciful.

¹⁶ And they put away the strange gods from among them and served the LORD; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

²³ If it is the scourge, it slays suddenly, and it does not laugh at the trial of the innocent.

⁵ For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now I will arise, saith the LORD; I will set in safety the one whom the wicked one has ensnared.

²¹ These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou didst think that I was altogether such a one as thyself, but I will reprove thee and set them in order before thine eyes.

²⁶ For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten, and they boast that thou hast slain their enemies.

²² For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

¹ ¶ So I returned and considered all the violence that is done under the sun and behold the tears of such as are oppressed, and they have no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but the oppressed had no comforter.

¹¹ Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. ¹² Though a sinner does evil one hundred times and his judgment is prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with those that fear God, who fear before his presence;

⁵ Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nothing? And those among my people that take rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name is continually blasphemed every day.

¹⁷ Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, In what have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that does evil pleases the LORD, and he delights in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?

¹⁵ We say, therefore, now, that blessed are the proud and even that those that work wickedness are prospered; those that tempted God have escaped.

⁴ Or dost thou despise the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, ignoring that the goodness of God leads thee to repentance? ⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

¹⁵ And have as saving health the patience of our Lord, even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him has written unto you

¹¹ My feet have held to his steps, I have kept his way, and have not departed. ¹² Neither have I separated myself from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness; they do not know in what they stumble.

⁴⁷ And that slave who knew his lord’s will and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. ⁴⁸ But he that knew not and did commit things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required; and to whom much was committed, more will be asked of him.

¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness more than the light because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

³¹ ¶ Then Jesus said to those Jews who had believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye shall be my disciples indeed;

⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father ye desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.

³⁹ ¶ And Jesus said, For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see might see and that those who see might be blinded. ⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also? ⁴¹ Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin; but now because ye say, We see, therefore your sin abides.

³⁵ Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the Light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you; for he that walks in darkness does not know where he goes.

⁴⁰ He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes nor understand with their heart and be converted, and I should heal them.

⁶ He who does not abide in me shall be cast forth as an unsound branch and shall wither, and they are gathered and cast into the fire and are burned.

²² If I had not come and spoken unto them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ He that hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them works which no other man has done, they would not have sin; but now they have seen them and hate both me and my Father.

³² Who having understood the righteousness of God, they did not understand that those who do such things are worthy of death, not only those that do the same, but even those who encourage those that do them.

¹⁷ ¶ Behold, thou doth call thyself a Jew and art supported by the law and doth glory in God ¹⁸ and dost know his will and approve the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law, ¹⁹ and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of those who are in darkness, ²⁰ an instructor of the ignorant, a teacher of children, who hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. ²¹ Thou, therefore, who teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? ²² Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? Thou that dost abhor idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? ²³ Thou that makest thy boast of the law, with rebellion to the law doth thou dishonour God? ²⁴ For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

¹¹ there is no one that understands; there is no one that seeks after God. ¹² They are all gone out of the way; they are together become unprofitable; there is no one that does good, no, not one. ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips, ¹⁴ whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; ¹⁵ their feet are swift to shed blood; ¹⁶ destruction and misery are in their ways, ¹⁷ and the way of peace they have not known;

¹⁰ and with all deception of iniquity working in those that perish because they did not receive the charity of the truth, to be saved. ¹¹ Therefore, for this cause, God shall send the operation of error in them, that they should believe the lie; ¹² that they all might be condemned who did not believe the truth, but consented to the iniquity.

¹⁷ Therefore sin is still in the one that knows to do good and does not do it.

²⁰ Certainly, if having separated themselves from the contaminations of the world, by the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again entangle themselves therein and are overcome, their latter end is made worse for them than the beginnings. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog returns unto his own vomit, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us; but this happened that it might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

⁶ And the angels who did not keep their first estate but left their own habitation, he has reserved in eternal chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

¹⁴ ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retire from him, that he may be smitten and die. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that the most valiant men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the people of the slaves of David fell, and Uriah the Hittite died also.

⁸ He sits in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places he murders the innocent: his eyes are secretly set against the poor. ⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he catches the poor when he draws him into his net. ¹⁰ He crouches and hides himself, and many are those who fall under his power.

³⁹ And know this: that if the husband of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

⁷ Be not ye, therefore, partakers with them. ⁸ For in another time ye were darkness, but now ye are light in the Lord: walk as children of light; ⁹ (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), ¹⁰ approving what is well pleasing unto the Lord. ¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

² For ye know well that the day of the Lord shall come as a thief in the night.

³ Remember, therefore, of that which thou hast received and heard and hold to it and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come to thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

¹⁴ And she took off her widow’s garments and covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself and sat by the gate to the waters by the way to Timnath, for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife. ¹⁵ When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot because she had covered her face.

¹⁴ Thou shalt not commit adultery.

⁴ And David sent messengers and took her, and she came in unto him, and he lay with her. Then she purified herself from her uncleanness, and she returned unto her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived and sent and told David and said, I am with child. ⁶ ¶ Then David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ And when Uriah had come unto him, David asked him how Joab was and how the people were and how the war prospered. ⁸ And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and royal food was sent unto him. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the slaves of his lord and did not go down to his house. ¹⁰ And when they had told David, saying, Uriah did not go down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Didst thou not come from thy journey? Why then didst thou not go down to thy house? ¹¹ And Uriah said unto David, The ark and Israel and Judah abide in tents, and my lord Joab and the slaves of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By thy life and by the life of thy soul, I will not do this thing. ¹² And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the next day. ¹³ And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with the slaves of his lord but did not go down to his house.

¹² For thou hast done it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.

¹³ And thou shalt say, What does God know? How can he judge through the darkness? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are his hiding place, and he does not see; and he walks in the circuit of heaven.

¹¹ He has said in his heart, God has forgotten; he hides his face; he will never see it.

¹⁸ When thou didst see a thief, then thou didst consent with him and hast been partaker with adulterers.

¹¹ And they say, How does God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?

⁷ Yet they say, JAH shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

³² But whosoever commits adultery with a woman has a fault in his heart; he that does it corrupts his own soul. ³³ A wound and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall never be wiped away. ³⁴ For the jealous rage of a man will not spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he want to forgive, though thou givest many bribes.

⁹ in the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night; ¹⁰ and, behold, a woman met him with the attire of a harlot, and subtil of heart.

¹² Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, each man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the earth.

⁹ Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness, for they have said, The LORD has forsaken the earth, and the LORD does not see.

² If a thief is found breaking into a house and is smitten so he dies, he that killed him shall not be guilty of his blood. ³ If the sun is risen upon him, he that killed him is guilty of his blood; the thief should make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

¹³ ¶ They are among those that rebel against the light; they have never known its ways nor abided in its paths.

¹² ¶ Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days? Hast thou shown the dayspring its place, ¹³ that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

⁵ Dig through the wall in their sight, and leave thereby. ⁶ In their sight thou shalt bear it upon thy shoulders and carry it forth in the night; thou shalt cover thy face, and thou shalt not look at the land; for I have set thee for a sign unto the house of Israel. ⁷ And I did so as I was commanded: I brought forth my stuff by day, as stuff for a journey, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my hand; I brought it forth in the night, and I bore it upon my shoulder in their sight.

¹² And the prince that is among them shall be born upon their shoulders in the night, and they shall go forth; they shall dig through the wall to carry him out thereby; he shall cover his face that he not see the land with his eyes.

¹⁹ ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal;

⁴³ But know this that if the husband of the house knew in what watch the thief would come, he would watch and would not suffer his house to be broken into.

²⁰ For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. ¹² For it is a shame even to speak of those things which they do in secret. ¹³ But all these things when they are reproved by the light are made manifest, for the light is that which manifests everything.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death redeem it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

²⁶ As the thief is ashamed when he is taken, so shall the house of Israel be ashamed: they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive according to that which they have done in the body, good or evil. ¹¹ Therefore being certain of that terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

¹⁶ and said to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of him that is seated upon the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb; ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand before him?

¹⁶ Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. ¹⁷ Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store. ¹⁸ Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy cows and the flocks of thy sheep. ¹⁹ Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out. ²⁰ The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, destruction and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand to do, until thou art destroyed and perish quickly because of the wickedness of thy doings, by which thou hast forsaken me.

²⁶ They are passed away as the ships of Ebeh {Heb. reed} as the eagle that throws himself on the prey.

¹⁶ Who were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood.

⁷ Let them melt away as waters which run continually; when he bends his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.

²² ¶ Let their table become a snare before them, and that which should have been for their prosperity, let it become a stumbling block.

¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall. ¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As the dream of one who awakes; so, O Lord, when thou shalt rise up, thou shalt despise their appearances.

³³ The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked, but he shall bless the habitation of the just.

¹⁰ Pass by as a river from thy land, O daughter of Tarshish; for thou shalt have no more strength.

² If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, said the LORD of the hosts, I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yea, I have cursed them already because ye do not lay it to heart.

¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream, ¹⁶ which was hidden by ice and covered by snow. ¹⁷ Which in the time of heat, they vanish; when they are heated, they disappear out of their place;

¹³ They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol.

²³ This one shall die in the full strength of his beauty, being completely at ease and quiet.

³² He shall yet be brought to the grave and shall remain in the tomb. ³³ The clods of the river valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall be drawn after him, as there were innumerable before him. ³⁴ How then do ye comfort me in vain, given that your answers remain as falsehood?

¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling.

⁸ As a snail which melts, let them pass away, like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun. ⁹ Before your pots can feel the fire of the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.

² As smoke is driven away; so drive them away: as wax melts before the fire, so shall the wicked perish at the presence of God.

³² ¶ For his wickedness shall the wicked be cast out, but the righteous in his death has hope.

⁴ ¶ For to him that is still among the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. ⁵ For the living know that they shall die, but the dead do not know any thing; neither do they have any more reward, for their memory is placed into oblivion. ⁶ Even their love and their hatred and their envy is now perished; neither have they any more a portion in the age in any thing that is done under the sun.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried;

⁷ ¶ For there is yet hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again and that its tender branch will not cease. ⁸ Though its root waxes old in the earth and its trunk is dead in the ground, ⁹ at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth boughs like a new plant. ¹⁰ But when man shall die and be cut off, and the man shall perish, where shall he be?

¹⁴ I have said to the pit, Thou art my father; to the worms, my mother, and my sister.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above his branch shall be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the streets.

²⁶ and afterward from this, my stricken skin and from my own flesh, I must see God:

⁷ ¶ The memory of the just is blessed, but the name of the wicked shall stink.

¹⁰ Then I also saw that the wicked who were buried came into remembrance more than those who had frequented the holy place, and these were forgotten in the city where they had worked uprightly. This also is vanity.

¹⁴ They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise because thou hast visited and destroyed them and made all their memory to perish.

¹⁴ he cried aloud and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit; let the beasts get away from under him and the fowls from his branches:

¹⁰ And now the axe is also laid unto the root of the trees; therefore, every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

⁶ And her rival provoked her to anger and sorrow because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ And this would happen year by year when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she would provoke her; therefore, she would weep and not eat.

⁹ Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

¹³ The blessing of the one that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb)

⁸ And Haman said unto King Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of thy kingdom, and their laws are different from all other people; neither do they observe the king’s laws: therefore, it is not profitable for the king to allow them to remain. ⁹ If it pleases the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the public works, to bring it into the king’s treasuries. ¹⁰ And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman, the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.

⁴ Then the presidents and governors looked for occasions against Daniel on behalf of the kingdom, but they could find no occasion or fault because he was faithful, and no vice nor fault was found in him. ⁵ Then these men said, We shall never find any occasion against this Daniel except we find it against him in the law of his God. ⁶ ¶ Then these governors and presidents assembled together before the king and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever. ⁷ All the presidents of the kingdom, magistrates, governors, great ones, and captains have agreed in common accord to promote a royal decree and to confirm it that whoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, except of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. ⁸ Now, O king, confirm the decree and sign the writing that it not be moved, according to the law of Media and of Persia, which does not change. ⁹ Therefore King Darius signed the writing and the decree.

¹² And from then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend; whosoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar. ¹³ Therefore when Pilate heard that word, he brought Jesus forth and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. ¹⁴ And it was the preparation of the passover and about the sixth hour; then he said unto the Jews, Behold your King! ¹⁵ But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The high priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. ¹⁶ ¶ So that then, he delivered him unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.

¹³ And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. ¹⁴ For they are spirits of demons, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

² with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

¹¹ For he knows the vain men; and he sees the iniquity; will he not then understand it?

¹³ In what does the wicked irritate God? He has said in his heart, Thou wilt not require accountability. ¹⁴ Thou hast seen it, for thou dost behold mischief and spite to requite it with thy hand: the poor commits himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

⁴ ¶ The LORD is in the temple of his holiness, the LORD’s throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try the children of men. ⁵ The LORD tries the righteous, but the wicked and he that loves violence his soul hates.

³ For I became angry against the foolish when I saw the peace of the wicked. ⁴ Because there is no restraint that would bring about their death, but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore they are crowned with pride; they cover themselves with violence as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness; they easily obtain the desires of their heart. ⁸ They are lawless and speak wickedly of doing violence; they speak loftily. ⁹ They set their mouth against heaven, and their tongue walks through the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore his people shall return here; and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. ¹¹ And they say, How does God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? ¹² Behold, these ungodly men, without being troubled by the world obtain riches.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he weighs all his goings.

³ ¶ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding those who are evil and those who are good.

²¹ ¶ If thy enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, ²² for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee. ²³ ¶ The north wind drives away rain, so does an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

⁸ If thou seest violence unto the poor and the extortion of rights and justice in a province, do not marvel at the matter, for height is looking upon height; and there is one higher than they.

¹¹ Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

⁸ For he shall say, Are not my princes altogether kings? ⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel those of Jerusalem and of Samaria; ¹¹ shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

¹² Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as this day, or much more excellent.

⁷ The LORD has sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

² Though they dig unto Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down;

¹³ Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil and canst not look on iniquity: why dost thou look upon those that deal treacherously and hold thy tongue when the wicked devour the man that is more righteous than he?

¹⁶ And he spoke a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; ¹⁷ and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my storehouses and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

⁴⁵ But and if that slave shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming, and shall begin to beat the menslaves and maids and to eat and drink and to be drunken,

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

²³ And I will kill her children with death, and all the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} shall know that I AM he that searches the kidneys and hearts, and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

²² Those that hate thee shall be clothed with shame, and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.

²¹ His sons shall be honoured and he shall not know of it; or they shall be afflicted, but he shall not perceive of them.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

¹⁰ Vau For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be; thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

³⁵ Resh I have seen the wicked in great power and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, behold, he was not: I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors.

⁷ ¶ The wicked spring forth as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity blossom, so that they shall be destroyed for ever:

⁵ And it shall be as when the harvestman gathers the sheaves and reaps the grain with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathers grain in the valley of Rephaim. ⁶ ¶ Yet gleaning shall be left in it as when the olive tree is shaken; two or three berries are left in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.

¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beautiful appearance of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

¹ ¶ Come now, Oh ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

¹⁴ And I looked, and, behold, a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown and in his hand a sharp sickle. ¹⁵ And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that was seated on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle and reap; for the hour is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is dry. ¹⁶ And he that was seated on the cloud thrust in his sickle upon the earth; and the earth was reaped. ¹⁷ And another angel came out of the temple which is in the heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. ¹⁸ And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. ¹⁹ And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. ²⁰ And the winepress was trodden outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the bits of the horses, for a thousand six hundred furlongs.

²⁸ Now, therefore, if ye desire, look upon me and see if I shall lie in your presence.

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges; if it is not he who does this then, who is it and where is he?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed?

² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?

⁴ my lips shall not speak iniquity, nor my tongue utter deceit.
