¹⁶ For men verily swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all controversy.

²² And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of the heavens and of the earth,

²³ Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son; but according to the mercy that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me and to the land in which thou hast sojourned.

³⁰ And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand that they may be a witness unto me that I have dug this well. ³¹ Therefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they swore, both of them.

⁵³ The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their fathers, judge between us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.

¹¹ then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he has not put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods, and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.

¹⁶ As I live, said the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwells that made him king, whose oath he despised and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the midst of Babylon, he shall die. ¹⁷ And not with a mighty army, nor with a great company shall Pharaoh do anything for him in the battle when they cast up mounts, and build forts to cut off many lives: ¹⁸ seeing he despised the oath to invalidate the covenant when, behold, he had given his hand and has done all these things, he shall not escape. ¹⁹ Therefore thus hath the Lord GOD said: As I live, surely my oath that he has despised and my covenant that he has broken, even it will I turn upon his own head. ²⁰ And I will spread my net upon him and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass with which he has rebelled against me.

²⁰ Whosoever therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it and by all things thereon. ²¹ And whosoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it and by Him that dwells therein. ²² And he that shall swear by the heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him that sits thereon.
