³ Son of man, speak unto the elders of Israel and say unto them, Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Are ye come to enquire of me? As I live, said the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you.

⁶ And Saul enquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams nor by Urim nor by prophets.

¹⁵ and call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. ¹⁶ ¶ But unto the wicked God saith, What part hast thou to declare my statutes or that thou should take my covenant in thy mouth? ¹⁷ Seeing thou dost hate chastening and dost cast my words behind thee. ¹⁸ When thou didst see a thief, then thou didst consent with him and hast been partaker with adulterers. ¹⁹ Thou didst give thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frames deceit. ²⁰ Thou didst sit and speak against thy brother; thou didst slander thine own mother’s son. ²¹ These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou didst think that I was altogether such a one as thyself, but I will reprove thee and set them in order before thine eyes.

⁸ ¶ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

²⁷ ¶ The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination; how much more, when he brings it with lewdness?

⁹ ¶ He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

¹² When ye come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; likewise, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood.

³ Son of man, these men have caused their uncleanness to come up over their heart and have established the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them? ⁴ Therefore speak unto them and say unto them, Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Every man of the house of Israel that sets up his idols in his heart and has established the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face and comes to the prophet, I, the LORD, will answer him that comes like this in the multitude of his idols

⁷ For any man of the house of Israel or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel who has separated himself from walking after me and has set up his idols in his heart and has established the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face and comes to the prophet to enquire of him concerning me, I, the LORD, will answer him by myself: ⁸ and I will set my face against that man and will set him up for a sign and for sayings, and I will cut him off from among my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

³¹ For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day; and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, said the Lord GOD, I will not be enquired of by you.

⁷ Then the prophets shall be ashamed, and the diviners confounded; and they shall all cover their lips because they shall have no answer from God.

⁷ ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁸ This people draws nigh unto me with their mouth and honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. ⁹ But in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.

⁷ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come?

²⁴ God is a Spirit and those that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
