^{6 (9:7)} The swords of the enemy have failed unto the end: and their cities thou hast destroyed. Their memory hath perished with a noise:

¹³ And Moses said to the people: Fear not: stand, and see the great wonders of the Lord, which he will do this day; for the Egyptians, whom you see now, you shall see no more for ever.

¹⁶ Let fear and dread fall upon them, in the greatness of thy arm: let them become immoveable as a stone, until thy people, O Lord, pass by: until this thy people pass by, which thou hast possessed.

¹³ For he hath said: By the strength of my own hand I have done it, and by my own wisdom I have understood: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have taken the spoils of the princes, and as a mighty man hath pulled down them that sat on high. ¹⁴ And my hand hath found the strength of the people as a nest; and as eggs are gathered, that are left, so have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or made the least noise.

²⁴ Therefore, thus saith the Lord the God of hosts: O my people that dwellest in Sion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall strike thee with his rod, and he shall lift up his staff over thee in the way of Egypt. ²⁵ For yet a little and a very little while, and my indignation shall cease, and my wrath shall be upon their wickedness.

⁶ That struck the people in wrath with an incurable wound, that brought nations under in fury, that persecuted in a cruel manner. ⁷ The whole earth is quiet and still, it is glad and hath rejoiced. ⁸ The fir trees also have rejoiced over thee, and the cedars of Libanus, saying: Since thou hast slept, there hath none come up to cut us down.

¹⁷ That made the world a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof, that opened not the prison to his prisoners?

²² And I will rise up against them, saith the Lord of hosts: and I will destroy the name of Babylon, and the remains, and the bud, and the offspring, saith the Lord. ²³ And I will make it a possession for the ericius and pools of waters, and I will sweep it and wear it out with a besom, saith the Lord of hosts.

²⁶ Hast thou not heard what I have done to him of old? from the days of old I have formed it: and now I have brought it to effect: and it hath come to pass that hills fighting together, and fenced cities should be destroyed.

²⁵ Behold I come against thee, thou destroying mountain, saith the Lord, which corruptest the whole earth: and I will stretch out my hand upon thee, and will roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.

⁶² Thou shalt say: O Lord, thou hast spoken against this place to destroy it: so that there should be neither man nor beast to dwell therein, and that it should be desolate for ever. ⁶³ And when thou shalt have made an end of reading this book, thou shalt tie a stone to it, and shalt throw it into the midst of the Euphrates: ⁶⁴ And thou shalt say: Thus shall Babylon sink, and she shall not rise up from the affliction that I will bring upon her, and she shall be utterly destroyed. Thus far are the words of Jeremias.

⁸ Rejoice not, thou my enemy, over me, because I am fallen: I shall arise, when I sit in darkness, the Lord is my light.

¹⁰ And my enemy shall behold, and she shall be covered with shame, who saith to me: Where is the Lord thy God? my eyes shall look down upon her: now shall she be trodden under foot as the mire of the streets.

⁹ What do ye devise against the Lord? he will make an utter end: there shall not rise a double affliction. ¹⁰ For as thorns embrace one another: so while they are feasting and drinking together, they shall be consumed as stubble that is fully dry. ¹¹ Out of thee shall come forth one that imagineth evil against the Lord, contriving treachery in his mind. ¹² Thus saith the Lord: Though they were perfect: and many of them so, yet thus shall they be cut off, and he shall pass: I have afflicted thee, and I will afflict thee no more. ¹³ And now I will break in pieces his rod with which he struck thy back, and I will burst thy bonds asunder.

²⁶ And the enemy, death, shall be destroyed last: For he hath put all things under his feet. And whereas he saith:

⁵⁴ And when this mortal hath put on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. ⁵⁵ O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? ⁵⁶ Now the sting of death is sin: and the power of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks be to God, who hath given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

² And he laid hold on the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.
