¹⁴ Then came to him the disciples of John, saying: Why do we and the Pharisees, fast often, but thy disciples do not fast?

⁶ Many men are called merciful: but who shall find a faithful man?

¹⁶ And when you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

² Now when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him:

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He hath a devil. ¹⁹ The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.

¹⁸ And the disciples of John and the Pharisees used to fast. And they come and say to him: Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast; but thy disciples do not fast? ¹⁹ And Jesus saith to them: Can the children of the marriage fast, as long as the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. ²⁰ But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them: and then they shall fast in those days. ²¹ No man seweth a piece of raw cloth to an old garment: otherwise the new piecing taketh away from the old, and there is made a greater rent. ²² And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: otherwise the wine will burst the bottles, and both the wine will be spilled and the bottles will be lost. But new wine must be put into new bottles.

³³ And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees in like manner; but thine eat and drink? ³⁴ To whom he said: Can you make the children of the bridegroom fast whilst the bridegroom is with them? ³⁵ But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them: then shall they fast in those days. ³⁶ And he spoke also a similitude to them: That no man putteth a piece from a new garment upon an old garment: otherwise he both rendeth the new, and the piece taken from the new agreeth not with the old. ³⁷ And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: otherwise the new wine will break the bottles; and it will be spilled and the bottles will be lost. ³⁸ But new wine must be put into new bottles: and both are preserved. ³⁹ And no man drinking old hath presently a mind to new: for he saith: The old is better.

⁹ And to some who trusted in themselves as just and despised others, he spoke also this parable: ¹⁰ Two men went up into the temple to pray: the one a Pharisee and the other a publican. ¹¹ The Pharisee standing, prayed thus with himself: O God, I give thee thanks that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, as also is this publican. ¹² I fast twice in a week: I give tithes of all that I possess.

²⁵ And there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews, concerning purification.
