¹⁰ He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am lost, and he hath taken away my hope, as from a tree that is plucked up.

¹³ Now upon a certain day, when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother, ¹⁴ There came a messenger to Job, and said: The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them, ¹⁵ And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁶ And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said: The fire of God fell from heaven, and striking the sheep and the servants, hath consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁷ And while he also was yet speaking, there came another, and said: The Chaldeans made three troops, and have fallen upon the camels, and taken them; moreover, they have slain the servants with the sword: and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁸ He was yet speaking, and behold another came in, and said: Thy sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, ¹⁹ A violent wind came on a sudden from the side of the desert, and shook the four corners of the house, and it fell upon thy children, and they are dead: and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord, and struck Job with a very grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head:

¹¹ For what is my strength, that I can hold out? or what is my end, that I should keep patience?

⁶ My days have passed more swiftly than the web is cut by the weaver, and are consumed without any hope.

¹³ Even so are the ways of all that forget God, an the hope of the hypocrite shall perish: ¹⁴ His folly shall not please him, and his trust shall be like the spider's web. ¹⁵ He shall lean upon his house, and it shall no stand: he shall prop it up, and it shall not rise: ¹⁶ He seemeth to have moisture before the sun cometh; and at his rising, his blossom shall shoot forth. ¹⁷ His roots shall be thick upon a heap of stones; and among the stones he shall abide. ¹⁸ If one swallow him up out of his place, he shall deny him, and shall say: I know thee not.

¹⁴ If he pull down, there is no man that can build up: if he shut up a man, there is none that can open.

¹¹ My days have passed away, my thoughts are dissipated, tormenting my heart.

¹⁵ Where is now then my expectation, and who considereth my patience?

²⁰ Let mercy forget him: may worms be his sweetness: let him be remembered no more, but be broken in pieces as an unfruitful tree.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked highly exalted, and lifted up like the cedars of Libanus. ³⁶ And I passed by, and lo, he was not: and I sought him and his place was not found.

^{13 (88:14)} But I, O Lord, have cried to thee: and in the morning my prayer shall prevent thee. ^{14 (88:15)} Lord, why castest thou off my prayer: why turnest thou away thy face from me? ^{15 (88:16)} I am poor, and in labours from my youth: and being exalted have been humbled and troubled. ^{16 (88:17)} Thy wrath hath come upon me: and thy terrors have troubled me. ^{17 (88:18)} They have come round about me like water all the day: they have compassed me about together. ^{18 (88:19)} Friend and neighbour thou hast put far from me: and my acquaintance, because of misery.

⁵ He. The Lord is become as an enemy: he hath cast down Israel headlong, he hath overthrown all the walls thereof: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath multiplied in the danghter of Juda the afflicted, both men and women. ⁶ Vau. And he hath destroyed his tent as a garden, he hath thrown down his tabernacle: the Lord hath caused feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Sion: and hath delivered up king and priest to reproach, and to the indignation of his wrath.

⁸ In all things we suffer tribulation: but are not distressed. We are straitened: but are not destitute. ⁹ We suffer persecution: but are not forsaken. We are cast down: but we perish not.
