¹ My spirit shall be wasted, my days shall be shortened and only the grave remaineth for me.

¹¹ For what is my strength, that I can hold out? or what is my end, that I should keep patience?

¹³ If I wait hell is my house, and I have made my bed in darkness. ¹⁴ I have said to rottenness: Thou art my father; to worms, my mother and my sister.

¹⁷ My wife hath abhorred my breath, and I entreated the children of my womb.

¹⁶ And Job lived after these things, a hundred and forty years, and he saw his children, and his children's children, unto the fourth generation,

¹⁰ I said: In the midst of my days I shall go to the gates of hell: I sought for the residue of my years. Hell... Sheol, or Hades, the region of the dead. ¹¹ I said: I shall not see the Lord God in the land of the living. I shall behold man no more, nor the inhabitant of rest. ¹² My generation is at an end, and it is rolled away from me, as a shepherd's tent. My life is cut off, as by a weaver: whilst I was yet but beginning, he cut me off: from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me. ¹³ I hoped till morning, as a lion so hath he broken all my bones: from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me. ¹⁴ I will cry like a young swallow, I will meditate like a dove: my eyes are weakened looking upward: Lord, I suffer violence, answer thou for me.

¹⁶ For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be angry unto the end: because the spirit shall go forth from my face, and breathings I will make.
