¹¹ Behold thou hast heard all that the kings of the Assyrians have done to all countries which they have destroyed, and canst thou be delivered?

⁴ And when the king of the Assyrians found that Osee, endeavouring to rebel, had sent messengers to Sua, the king of Egypt, that he might not pay tribute to the king of the Assyrians, as he had done every year, he besieged him, bound him, and cast him into prison. ⁵ And he went through all the land: and going up to Samaria, he besieged it three years. ⁶ And in the ninth year of Osee, the king of the Assyrians took Samaria, and carried Israel away to Assyria: and he placed them in Hala, and Habor, by the river of Gozan, in the cities of the Medes.

³³ Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their land from the hand of the king of Assyria? ³⁴ Where is the god of Emath, and of Arphad? where is the god of Sepharvaim, of Ana, and of Ava? have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? ³⁵ Who are they among all the gods of the nations that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the Lord may deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

⁷ But he shall not take it so, and his heart shall not think so: but his heart shall be set to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few. ⁸ For he shall say: ⁹ Are not my princes as so many kings? is not Calano as Charcamis: and Emath as Arphad? is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idol, so also their idols of Jerusalem, and of Samaria. ¹¹ Shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols? ¹² And it shall come to pass, that when the Lord shall have performed all his works in mount Sion, and in Jerusalem, I will visit the fruit of the proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of the haughtiness of his eyes. ¹³ For he hath said: By the strength of my own hand I have done it, and by my own wisdom I have understood: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have taken the spoils of the princes, and as a mighty man hath pulled down them that sat on high. ¹⁴ And my hand hath found the strength of the people as a nest; and as eggs are gathered, that are left, so have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or made the least noise.

¹⁷ That made the world a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof, that opened not the prison to his prisoners?

¹⁸ Neither let Ezechias trouble you, saying: The Lord will deliver us. Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their land out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians? ¹⁹ Where is the god of Emath and of Arphad? where is the god of Sepharvaim? have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? ²⁰ Who is there among all the gods of these lands, that hath delivered his country out of my hand, that the Lord may deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

¹⁸ For of a truth, O Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have laid waste lands, and their countries. ¹⁹ And they have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the works of men's hands, of wood and stone: and they broke them in pieces.
