²³ Thy princes are faithless, companions of thieves: they all love bribes, they run after rewards. They judge not for the fatherless: and the widow's cause cometh not in to them.

⁸ Neither shalt thou take bribes, which even blind the wise, and pervert the words of the just.

¹⁹ And not go aside to either part. Thou shalt not accept person nor gifts: for gifts blind the eyes of the wise, and change the words of the just.

¹⁷ And after the death of Joiada, the princes of Juda went in, and worshipped the king: and he was soothed by their services and hearkened to them. ¹⁸ And they forsook the temple of the Lord the God of their fathers, and served groves and idols, and wrath came upon Juda and Jerusalem for this sin. ¹⁹ And he sent prophets to them to bring them back to the Lord, and they would not give ear when they testified against them. ²⁰ The spirit of God then came upon Zacharias the son of Joiada the priest, and he stood in the sight of the people, and said to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Why transgress you the commandment of the Lord which will not be for your good, and have forsaken the Lord, to make him forsake you? ²¹ And they gathered themselves together against him, and stoned him at the king's commandment in the court of the house of the Lord.

¹⁴ Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people wickedly transgressed according to all the abominations of the Gentiles: and they defiled the house of the Lord, which he had sanctified to himself in Jerusalem.

²³ The wicked man taketh gifts out of the bosom, that he may pervert the paths of judgment.

²⁴ He that is partaker with a thief, hateth his own soul: he heareth one putting him to his oath, and discovereth not.

¹⁴ The Lord will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and its princes: for you have devoured the vineyard, and the spoil of the poor is in your house.

¹ Woe to them that make wicked laws: and when they write, write injustice: ² To oppress the poor in judgment, and do violence to the cause of the humble of my people: that widows might be their prey, and that they might rob the fatherless.

¹⁵ He that walketh in justices, and speaketh truth, that casteth away avarice by oppression, and shaketh his hands from all bribes, that stoppeth his ears lest he hear blood, and shutteth his eyes that he may see no evil.

⁵ I will go therefore to the great men, and will speak to them: for they have known the way of the Lord, the judgment of their God: and behold these have altogether broken the yoke more, and have burst the bonds.

²⁸ They are grown gross and fat: and have most wickedly transgressed my words. They have not judged the cause of the widow, they have not managed the cause of the fatherless, and they have not judged the judgment of the poor. ²⁹ Shall I not visit for these things, saith the Lord? or shall not my soul take revenge on such a nation?

¹⁷ But thy eyes and thy heart are set upon covetousness, and upon shedding innocent blood, and upon oppression, and running after evil works.

⁶ Behold the princes of Israel, every one hath employed his arm in thee to shed blood. ⁷ They have abused father and mother in thee, they have oppressed the stranger in the midst of thee, they have grieved the fatherless and widow in thee. ⁸ Thou hast despised my sanctuaries, and profaned my sabbaths. ⁹ Slanderers have been in thee to shed blood, and they have eaten upon the mountains in thee, they have committed wickedness in the midst of thee. ¹⁰ They have discovered the nakedness of their father in thee, they have humbled the uncleanness of the menstruous woman in thee. ¹¹ And every one hath committed abomination with his neighbour's wife, and the father in law hath wickedly defiled his daughter in law, the brother hath oppressed his sister the daughter of his father in thee. ¹² They have taken gifts in thee to shed blood: thou hast taken usury and increase, and hast covetously oppressed thy neighbours: and thou hast forgotten me, saith the Lord God.

⁵ We have sinned, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly, and have revolted: and we have gone aside from thy commandments, and thy judgments. ⁶ We have not hearkened to thy servants, the prophets, that have spoken in thy name to our kings, to our princes, to our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

¹⁸ Their banquet is separated, they have gone astray by fornication: they that should have protected them have loved to bring shame upon them.

³ They have made the king glad with their wickedness: and the princes with their lies. ⁴ They are all adulterers, like an oven heated by the baker: the city rested a little from the mingling of the leaven, till the whole was leavened. ⁵ The day of our king, the princes began to be mad with wine: he stretched out his hand with scorners.

¹⁵ All their wickedness is in Galgal, for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their devices I will cast them forth out of my house: I will love them no more, all their princes are revolters.

¹ And I said: Hear, O ye princes of Jacob, and ye chiefs of the house of Israel: Is it not your part to know judgment, ² You that hate good, and love evil: that violently pluck off their skins from them and their flesh from their bones? ³ Who have eaten the flesh of my people, and have flayed their skin off them: and have broken, and chopped their bones as for the kettle, and as flesh in the midst of the pot.

¹¹ Her princes have judged for bribes: and her priests have taught for hire, and her prophets divined for money: and they leaned upon the Lord, saying: Is not the Lord in the midst of us? no evil shall come among us.

³ The evil of their hands they call good: the prince requireth, and the judge is for giving: and the great man hath uttered the desire of his soul, and they have troubled it.

¹⁰ And oppress not the widow, and the fatherless, and the stranger, and the poor: and let not a man devise evil in his heart against his brother.

⁵ And I will come to you in judgment, and will be a speedy witness against sorcerers, and adulterers, and false swearers, and them that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widows, and the fatherless: and oppress the stranger, and have not feared me, saith the Lord of hosts.

¹³ And he saith to them: It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.

¹⁷ And he taught, saying to them: Is it not written: My house shall be called the house of prayer to all nations, but you have made it a den of thieves.

² Saying: There was a judge in a certain city, who feared not God nor regarded man. ³ And there was a certain widow in that city; and she came to him, saying: Avenge me of my adversary. ⁴ And he would not for a long time. But afterwards he said within himself: Although I fear not God nor regard man, ⁵ Yet because this widow is troublesome to me, I will avenge her, lest continually coming she weary me.

⁴⁶ Saying to them: It is written: My house is the house of prayer. But you have made it a den of thieves.

⁵ And it came to pass on the morrow, that their princes and ancients and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem. ⁶ And Annas the high priest and Caiphas and John and Alexander: and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest. ⁷ And setting them in the midst, they asked: By what power or by what name, have you done this? ⁸ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them: Ye princes of the people and ancients, hear. ⁹ If we this day are examined concerning the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he hath been made whole: ¹⁰ Be it known to you all and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God hath raised from the dead, even by him, this man standeth here before you, whole. ¹¹ This is the stone which was rejected by you the builders, which is become the head of the corner.
